Georgia State Route 713 was the designation given to Interstate 575 during construction.
Overview
Interstate 575 (unsigned SR 417) is the 31 mile long Phillip M. Landrum Memorial Highway, which serves the far northern suburbs of the Atlanta metropolitan area. It is cosigned with SR 5 throughout while the old alignment of SR 5 parallels as a local road, maintained by either the county or city through which it passes.
The freeway connects Interstate 75 at Marietta with Nelson via Woodstock, Canton and Holly Springs along the SR 5 corridor. West of Nelson, when Interstate 575 crosses the Cherokee/Pickens County line, the route transitions directly onto SR 515 (ARC Corridor A), an at-grade expressway. SR 5 extends north along side SR 515 as the Appalachian Developmental (APD) Highway / Zell Miller Mountain Parkway to Ellijay.
Northwest Corridor Express Lanes
The Northwest Corridor project underway between November 2013 and September 8, 2018 constructed 29.7 miles of two reversible toll lanes along both I-75 and I-575 north of the Perimeter Highway (I-285). The express lanes extend north along I-575 to the interchange (Exit 11) with Sixes Road. Costs were estimated at $834 million for the entire project.
History
HistoryThe American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) approved the establishment of Interstate 575 on October 28, 1977. The freeway was constructed in phases between 1979 and 1987.1,2:
- Interstate 75 north to SR 92 (Exit 7) – construction began in April 1978, opened on October 16, 1980.
- SR 92 (Exit 7) north to SR 5 Business / Riverstone Parkway (Exit 20) – construction began in 1981, opened on March 29, 1985; this incorporated the two-lane SR 20 bypass of Canton between Exit 16A and 19 that was built in 1978.
- SR 5 Business / Riverstone Parkway (Exit 20) north to SR 372 / Howell Bridge Road, opened in 1987.
A diamond interchange constructed at Ridgewalk Parkway opened to traffic on November 29, 2012. The $17.1 million project was first conceptualized in 1976. Opening of the new exit coincided with development of the adjacent Outlet Shoppes at Atlanta on the east side of the freeway.3

SR 372/5 Business tie into the north end of I-575 via an expressway spur northwest from old SR 5 (Ball Ground Highway / Canton Highway). SR 372 runs along this route south to Ball Ground as part of a 27 mile long course to Alpharetta. 07/26/22

SR 515 (APD Highway) commences north from the end of Interstate 575. SR 515 is a 76 mile long highway through the Appalachian Highlands of North Georgia to the North Carolina state line near Lake Chatuge. 07/26/22
An end shield stands ahead of the gore point bringing SR 5BU and SR 372 northbound onto SR 5/515 (APD Highway). Most of SR 515 north to the overlap with U.S. 76 at Ellijay is as an expressway. 05/29/07
South at
SR 5/515 (Appalachian Development Highway) intersect SR 372/5 Business at the north end of Interstate 575 outside the city of Nelson. SR 5 extends south alongside I-575 while SR 5BU overlaps with SR 372 south into Ball Ground. 03/15/22
SR 372 and SR 5 Business branch southeast from I-575/SR 5 along 1.5 mile long expressway to Ball Ground Highway. Ball Ground Highway is the former alignment of SR 5 north to Nelson and south to Ball Ground. 03/15/22
Interstate 575 bypasses Ball Ground to the west along a rural freeway to the Canton Bypass (SR 20). SR 5 Business loops east from SR 515 to Exit 27 with Howell Bridge Road. 03/15/22

Providing access to I-75 north, which parallels just to the west, Chastain Road is the penultimate exit on I-575/SR 5 (Phillip Landrum Highway) south in Cobb County. 03/15/22
Chastain Road comprises a six lane arterial west from Exit 3 by a number of business parks to a diamond interchange with Interstate 75. 03/15/22
Continuing south, Interstate 575 crosses Big Shanty Road one mile ahead of Exit 1 with Barrett Parkway by Town Center at Cobb mall. 03/15/22
Barrett Parkway provides a second connection to I-75 north while I-575 south defaults onto I-75 south. SR 5 continues southward onto I-75 into Marietta. 03/15/22

Interstate 75 north at Exit 267 B for SR 5 Spur south to U.S. 41/SR 3 in Marietta. SR 5 has an implied overlap with I-75 north to I-575, which it combines with for all 31 miles from Exit 268 to the freeway end. 07/26/22

South at Chastain Road to
There is no direct access from I-75 south to I-575 north. A Breezewood connection joins the two freeways via Chastain Road east from Exit 271. 06/12/17
Chastain Road is a minor arterial leading east 0.74 miles from the ramps with I-75 at Exit 271 to the exchange with I-575/SR 5 at Exit 3. 06/12/17

An end shield preceded the I-575/SR 5 southbound merge onto I-75 north of the Canton Road Connector (SR 5 Spur). A flyover ramp was constructed next to this assembly for the Northwest Corridor Express Lanes in 2016-17. 05/29/07

Replacements for guide signs at Exit 267B changed SR 5 south to SR 5 Spur, a 2.33 mile route along the Canton Road Connector between U.S. 41/SR 3 (Cobb Parkway) and Canton Road (former SR 5). 07/11/10
Sound walls were eventually added along the east side of Interstate 75 leading into the wye interchange (Exit 268) with I-575/SR 5. 07/11/10
