Overview

Interstate 755 was cited as a 7 mile route between I-55 and I-20/Lakeland along the proposed Airport Parkway under New Interstate Highway Segments Needed in Mississippi, 2006-2026 in the National Transportation Research Group (TRIP) document “The Interstate Highway System in Mississippi: Saving Lives, Time and Money,” issued June 2006. The Airport Parkway was a proposed 12 mile long toll road linking Interstate 55 near Downtown Jackson with Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport (JAN) via a bridge over the Pearl River. The former Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) Airport Parkway project web site outlined the following:1

The proposed Project consists of an access-controlled, high-speed toll road to be constructed on new alignments. The proposed alignment will start at I-55 in the west, extend to the east into the cities of Flowood and Pearl, and, after diverging at the proposed West Rankin Parkway, will terminate at MS 25 north of the Airport and at MS 475 to the south of the Airport.

The three segments for the Airport Parkway were:

  • West Segment – I-55 to MS 468 (Flowood Drive)
  • East Segment – MS 468 (Flowood Drive) to MS 475 (Airport Road)
  • North Segment – proposed West Rankin Parkway to MS 25 (Lakeland Drive)

Airport Parkway Map

Airport Parkway was included in the $1.3 billion allocation for Hinds and Madison and Rankin Counties in the 2040 Metropolitan Transportation Plan. The plan was released in December 2015.2

History

As originally scheduled, the Airport Parkway was anticipated for completion by the end of 2012. The Airport Parkway project was suspended by the Mississippi Transportation Commission in September 2009. The global credit collapse and fallout from the 2008 economic recession was cited as reasons for dropping what would have been the first public-private partnership and toll road project in Mississippi.3
