Interstate 465 is the 53 mile beltway around the capital city of Indianapolis. Officially, the interstate is named the USS Indianapolis Memorial Highway, though the name is not used. The interstate was originally built through the 1960s, and has since been upgraded on the east, northeast, northwest, and west sides. Most of the beltway north of Interstate 70 is eight to ten lanes in width with the rest being at six lanes. The interstate multiplexes with Interstate 74 along the south and west sides and will multiplex with Interstate 69 along the east and south sides upon completion of the Southern Indiana extension of that highway. During the 1980s and 1990s, all of Indianapolis' U.S. and State Roads were removed from its street grid and were either truncated or realigned onto the Interstate 465 beltway. For the most part, the overlaps are not acknowledged outside of the entry and exit points onto the freeway. In all, U.S. 31, U.S. 36, U.S. 40, U.S. 52, U.S. 421, Indiana 37 and Indiana 67 share part of Interstate 465 for its loop around the city. Despite all the multiplexes, locals only refer to the highway as Interstate 465.
