Interstate 695 District of Columbia

Unsigned Interstate 695 previously ran east from the 11th Street Bridge to the Southeast Freeway end at Pennsylvania Avenue SE. Until 2009, I-295 took the 11th Street Bridge south to the Anacostia Freeway. 06/22/05

Two lanes joined Interstate 295 south across the 11th Street Bridge to both the Anacostia Freeway south and Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue. I-695 continued east with three lanes along the Southeast Freeway to Pennsylvania Avenue SE, which was the only connection to D.C. 295 north until 2012. 06/22/05

Eastbound unsigned Interstate 695 at the former southbound beginning of Interstate 295 south. South of the Anacostia River, I-295 defaulted onto the Anacostia Freeway without access to the freeway (D.C. 295) north. A ramp also connected with Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue south to Good Hope Road and Congress Heights. 06/22/05

Interstate 695 continued for another 0.75 miles from I-295 (11th Street Bridge) to Pennsylvania Avenue SE. A three-wye interchange joined the 11th Street Bridge and Southeast Freeway. 06/22/05

The Southeast Freeway continued east one half mile to Pennsylvania Avenue. Two ramps pictured here tied into an unused portion of the Southeast Freeway meant to link with the Barney Circle Freeway east to the Anacostia Freeway. These were demolished as part of the 2009-14 project to rebuild the 11th Street Bridges. 06/22/05

Freeway ends signs posted ahead of the Southeast Freeway default onto Pennsylvania Avenue SE east. A left-hand ramp, preceded with a Do Not Enter sign, ran under Pennsylvania Avenue as one of the primary routes into Robert F. Kennedy Stadium (former home of the Washington Redskins) and to provide emergency access to a nearby hospital. (Thanks to Paul Rizzo, 09/02/04, for the additional information.) 06/22/05

The Southeast Freeway ended; all traffic was directed to the Pennsylvania Avenue SE exit. Beyond the gore point was the unused underpass that would have carried Interstate 695 onto the canceled Barney Circle Freeway. 06/22/05
