The original interstate shield design included the state name between the red area and the highway number. However, as the specifications were refined and number sizes increased, the state name was removed from the Interstate Shield design. Ohio was the first state to formally drop the state name. Other states followed from 1970 onwards. However Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas readopted the state name on Interstate shields after 2009. Those shields that do not carry the state name are sometimes referred to as "neutered shields" on AARoads and by road enthusiasts in general.
