Basic Road Terminology

What are the differences between a freeway and expressway, arterial and boulevard, etc.?

What is an Arterial?

An arterial is a major roadway in a city or urban area that collects traffic and feeds it to the freeway system. Arterials are usually the roadways first plowed after a snowstorm to ensure adequate traffic flow. These routes accommodate four or more lanes of traffic and are often lined with businesses or private driveways.
