Road tirp fever. Suggestions?

I'm getting the urge to do a little exploring, but I'm not sure exactly where to go.

The mountains are always a preference, but I'm not sure there's anything to see that I haven't already seen. I've driven new US 35 in West Virginia and the new US 460 in Virginia, and I've driven through the grade-separated interchange at the split of US 19E and 19W in Tennessee. Anything new to the east or southeast of me that I've missed?

Another option is to head to western Kentucky and northwest Tennessee to check out the new section of I-69 (TN 690) that opened around Union City, along with the completed KY 80 bypass of Mayfield. I haven't traveled extensively in that area of Tennessee, but I have clinched US 45E and 45W, US 51, and US 412.

I guess I'm looking for suggestions for a trip that would take three days/two nights.

Maybe central PA, if it's not too far away. It's somewhat mountainous with plenty of hidden gems, and there's bound to be something of interest in the Harrisburg area. North of there, the southern section of the CSVT project is ongoing near Selinsgrove, and the northern section including the new river bridge is now open and worth checking out.

With all due respect to the Pennsylvanians here, the Keystone State really holds no interest for me, except for Sheetz and the chance to visit Rutter's for the first time. I've visited all the counties and clinched all the interstate mileage there.

The Shenandoah Valley in VA. There's Skyline Drive & Shenandoah National Park, US 48 (including the WV portion), US 340 between Winchester and Waynesboro which is scenic in my opinion, the somewhat recent Harrisonburg Primary Routes.

Unrelated to roads, but there's also Luray Caverns/Skyline Caverns.

I just assumed that was also true of all the other places you mentioned. Worth a shot I guess.  :D

Have you done the new Follansbee bridge? I know you like doing all the Ohio R crossings.

North Carolina has new-to-you stuff:
I-885, NC 540 (Aug), I-295(?), NC 74 (I-274), I-840, I-73 north of Greensboro, NC 417 Wilmington, probably more...   no mountains but they do have Sheetz...

If you did go over to Union City you could get the new US 78 routing...

I've been tirpping out myself about not driving any interesting roads this last couple weeks.

I just now noticed the typo in the subject line. Aargh.

I  may actually be going to Raleigh in September on business.

I thought about the new Follansbee bridge. I'm still lacking the Rabbit Hash-Rising Sun ferry (privately operated by an Indiana casino) as well.

Quote from: Mapmikey on July 10, 2024, 03:41:28 PMHave you done the new Follansbee Wellsburg bridge? I know you like doing all the Ohio R crossings.

Looks like the North Carolina work trip has fallen through. So I'm actively looking at going up to cross the new Wellsburg-Brilliant bridge, then maybe head down to Elkins to see if they have any new "personalized" merchandise (LOL) in the local stores. I didn't have any luck the last time I was there.

There appears to be no good way to get from Wellsburg to Elkins. Logically, I would think drop down to Moundsville and take US 250, but that's an awful road between Moundsville and Fairmont. Google Maps seems to suggest taking WV 27 into Pennsylvania and then working over to I-70, then I-79 south to Morgantown, and then US 119 and state routes to WV 92. That's not exactly a thrilling option, either.

In fact, the whole trip up to that bridge is not thrilling. Last time I went that direction, I took WV 2 to St. Mary's, then crossed the river to OH 7 to criss-cross bridges. When I drove to the river from Columbus a year or two prior, I took US 22 out of Cambridge. The suggested routing from home is I-77 north out of Charleston to Cambridge, then I-70 east to Wheeling and then OH 7 north. Yawn.

I suppose I could backtrack south and take WV 7 to US 250, or WV 20 to Clarksburg.
