San Diego, CA to Astoria, OR is 1,170 miles.
Brownsville, TX to Shiprock, NM is 1,200 miles.
What are some other long drives between two cities or towns in neighboring states?

(In addition - because most of these will involve California or Texas, for obvious reasons - I also pose this bonus question: what are some of the longest drives, in terms of distance, between cities or towns in neighboring states east of the Mississippi River - the side of the country where states tend to be smaller? One of the longest I can think of there is from Memphis, TN to Elizabeth City, NC, which covers 915 miles. Also, Dalton, GA to Key West, FL is about the same, at 909 miles.)

You can add to the GA-FL example by using a place along I-59. For example, Key West FL to Trenton GA is 956 miles.
Control cities CAN be off the route! Control cities make NO sense if signs end before the city is reached!

Travel Mapping - Most Traveled: I-40, 20, 10, 5, 95 - Longest Clinched: I-20, 85, 24, 16, NJ Tpk mainline

I imagine driving from Gravette, AR to Johnson City, TN is no mere day trip.

Bruce

Neah Bay, Makah Reservation, Washington to Island Park, Idaho - 928 miles (or 1,092 if avoiding a third state)

And looking north:

Vancouver, Washington to Atlin, British Columbia - 1,730 miles (via a bit of Yukon)

Copper Harbor MI to Proctorville OH - 911 miles

Cairo IL to Superior WI - 804 miles

Longest I can find involving Indiana is Tell City to Ironwood, MI, at 727 miles.
Indiana: counties 100%, highways 100%
Illinois: counties 100%, highways 61%
Michigan: counties 100%, highways 56%
Wisconsin: counties 86%, highways 23%

If we expand this to Canada, I have to think a drive from St. John's, NL, to Caniapiscau, QC, would be up there in terms of distance. I plotted a route via Labrador City in order to keep the entire trip within the two adjacent provinces. Google Maps quotes 2,096 km from St. John's to Labrador City via the Trans-Labrador Highway and 2,773 km from Labrador City to Caniapiscau, for a total of 4,869 km (equivalent to 3,025 miles).

If instead you took the route through Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, the distance would be 3,783 km via the Argentia ferry or 4,170 km via the Port-aux-Basques ferry.

I don't see a way to select shortest route on Google maps, so these are the fastest way (and I also picked "cities" that showed up, which may or may not be CDPs):

Yaak, MT to Dakota Dunes, SD - 1,299 miles

Dinosaur, CO to Tom, OK - 1,215 miles
*Julesburg, CO to Somerton, AZ - 1,183 miles
Dinosaur, CO to Galena, KS - 988 miles
Campos, CO to Grouse Creek, UT - 952 miles
Cortez, CO to South Sioux City, NE - 941 miles
Julesburg, CO to Rodeo, NM - 922 miles
Campo, CO to Canyon Village, WY - 850 miles

*Depending on if you count the Four Corners states as bordering

Longest I can find from CT is Pawcatuck to Ripley, NY (522 mi)

Longest for RI if we include water borders is Little Compton to Ripley (548 mi).  If not, then Little Compton to Williamstown, MA (196 mi)

Longest for NJ is Cape May to Lewiston, NY (514 mi), which is 4 miles farther than Massena.
Interstates I've clinched: 97, 290 (MA), 291 (CT), 291 (MA), 293, 295 (DE-NJ-PA), 295 (RI-MA), 384, 391, 395 (CT-MA), 395 (MD), 495 (DE), 610 (LA), 684, 691, 695 (MD), 695 (NY), 795 (MD)

thspfc

Ironwood, MI to Chesapeake, OH: 850 miles (via Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky; over 900 miles if you cross only the MI/OH border)
Superior, WI to Cairo, IL: 803 miles
Kenosha, WI to St. Vincent, MN: 760 miles

Since Missouri borders 8 states, I think we could get some long distances from it

Steele, MO - Harrison, NE: 1,092 miles driving distance, 877 miles straight line distance

Watson, MO - Mountain City, TN: 951 miles driving distance, 795 miles straight line distance

Wilson City, MO - Kenton, OK: 855 miles driving distance, 758 miles straight line distance

San Diego, CA to Astoria, OR is 1,170 miles.

Or Astoria to Winterhaven, CA, which is 1,284 miles.

One more: Eastport, ID to Ocotillo, CA: 1,511 miles.

This has to be the longest, right?  That's basically from the Canadian border to the Mexican border.

We haven't got a Minnesota to Michigan one yet, so here it is:

St Vincent, MN - Lost Peninsula, MI: 1,049 miles driving distance, 830 miles straight line distance

Gonna put down two states that are the big nothing.

Yeah, it clips Wyoming, but Google Maps says the drive between the gated neighborhood of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota, and a tiny town called Yaak in Montana is 1,300 miles long. You need to add 57 miles to avoid Wyoming.

There is definitely a better way to embed this link.
https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Dakota+Dunes,+SD/Yaak,+MT/@45.5815293,-110.7251627,6z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x878e067dcaf3d627:0xcbbe354c3d193946!2m2!1d-96.48642!2d42.4874948!1m5!1m1!1s0x53646bd810a56b0d:0xfad463e447c191a1!2m2!1d-115.7086591!2d48.833005!3e0

If you count these as "cities", it's pretty long, but Yaak is an unincorporated community of 248 and Dakota Dunes is a gated neighborhood by North Sioux City.
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

For the "East of the Mississippi" version, I was able to top the 1000 mile threshold:

Key West, FL to Florence, AL is 1051 miles (per Google Maps), with a waypoint where I-10 crosses the Apalachicola River.

Without that waypoint, the suggested route goes through Georgia (does that violate the OP's rules?), and is longer to boot.  I made a SWAG* that such a waypoint would be on the recommended route between those two places while constraining to the two states in question.

* SWAG = Scientific Wild Ass Guess

When I saw this I thought they were referring to the counties that want to break away from Oregon.

And you go through two other states.  Force it to stay in MI and IN only, and it's 969 miles.

Red Lake, ON to Old Fort Quebec, QC: 4355 km.  (It does cross north into Labrador).  If you end at Kegashka, it stays in the 2 provinces for 3234 km.

Dinosaur CO to Idabel OK: 1188 miles via the fastest route through Kansas, or 1162 if you use the most direct route. There might be a longer one, but it looks like far NW Colorado is pretty devoid of actual towns.

Rodeo NM to Miami OK: 1035 miles via Texas, or 1130 miles via the Oklahoma Panhandle.

If it wasn't for Cape Cod and the far northeastern corner of Vermont, Buffalo to Montauk would be further than Buffalo to anything in any neighboring state.

I would say Scranton to Binghamton is the longest in my journey. 61 miles
Also Fredericksburg to Winchester (which is bordered by WV) -> 81 miles
