Title: Signs on State-Maintained Roads in Your State That Need Repairs
Post by: Amaury on February 14, 2023, 02:43:56 AM
1) On US Route 97 southbound, at the junction with US Route 2 in Chelan County, the top-left panel on the sign on the left is missing here: https://goo.gl/maps/mHC9KB5ALfpGKjc26

2) On Interstate 90 eastbound after Exit 136, the Interstate 90 shield has been missing here for a while: https://maps.app.goo.gl/3ow1eg2SWq1xkzAP8

6) On Interstate 90 westbound, a little bit after milepost 74, the Trucks 60 sign on the post on the right is not facing the right direction: https://goo.gl/maps/SsUfwQBtXrFr4ntJ9

When it was facing the correct direction: https://goo.gl/maps/YJ4Sgxh2PmihfdAn9

7) In Kittitas (I-90 Exit 115), on the Interstate 90 eastbound entrance ramp, both "Freeway Entrance" signs fell over and are on the ground:

23) On Interstate 90 westbound, after milepost 140, this yellow cautionary sign for trucks in the median needs to be repaired: https://maps.app.goo.gl/tAc6JMNB2EKAipjQ7

I note also that on the eastbound side, the merge ahead sign for the entrance ramp at Exit 143 needs to be replaced as well. I will also note that in the 2018 capture, the last time milepost 144 was still standing on the eastbound side, the numbers were hardly visible, like the white text fell off and just left the "primer base," if you will.

Title: Re: Signs You've Reported to DOT That Were Repaired/Put Back Up
Post by: -- US 175 -- on February 15, 2023, 07:01:48 AM
Several years ago, I reported a BGS typo on US 175 in Dallas for the EB Second Ave/Bruton Rd exit.  The sign, a replacement, spelled Bruton as "Burton".  I've forgotten the turnaround time, but it actually got fixed.

Further east, and also several years ago, it was reported that the local TxDOT facility in Kaufman wanted to update BGSes along US 175, as well as replace any that were damaged or missing.  I found an email address to contact that office, and asked if they knew about certain signs/assemblies that had been knocked down or missing for a while.  I got an email back from a director/spokesperson that was quite terse, telling me they'd already catalogued them all.  I rebutted nicely, asking if they would update old/outdated mileage BGSes.  Short and to the point: no.  The replacements didn't include signs for the East Fork of the Trinity River, between Seagoville and Crandall; there had been signs for the river previously.  (Usually, TxDOT is good about signing most rivers and streams.)  I asked about mileage signs, as there were none EB before the east side of Crandall, and the first one there only listed "Kaufman 8"; no Mabank, no Athens. (After recent roadwork to add a never-constructed EB service road there, that mileage sign has disappeared.)  WB mileage signs west of Kaufman only have listed Dallas; no Crandall, no Seagoville.

I've thought about contacting the Dallas TxDOT office about adding mileage signs EB east of the US 175 west terminus, and EB east of the I-20/I-635 interchange, but I was concerned I'd get the same treatment as the woman from the Kaufman office.  Now with the missing "Kaufman 8" sign (which really needed another control point mileage, if not 2), there are no EB mileage signs between the US 175 west terminus and the east side of Kaufman.

Previous thread that was at least similar in focus, if not quite identical:

"Sign changes submitted to DOT by roadgeeks that actually got changed" (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=587.msg2545619#msg2545619)

My comments in this thread would be the same as my comments in reply 48 in that thread (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=587.msg2545619#msg2545619), so I won't repeat them.

On the other side of the equation, one of my job duties is to monitor the catch-all inbox for my highway district. We got an email reporting a couple of downed signs, I reported them to the sign crew, they got repaired pretty quickly, and the constituent emailed back her appreciation.

Missing US 27 shields on US 90 WB in Tallahassee, FL.
Missing FL A1A shield in Melbourne Beach, FL.
Missing END US 41 in Miami Beach, FL. ( Though the one that was in Miami at former junction with US 1 got installed instead, as FDOT denied US 41 going to Collins Avenue in Miami Beach).
Missing mileage signs on US 1,23, and 301 in Hilliard, FL.

It is not a sign, but I've reported faded guide lines for dual left turns to TDOT that nearly got me into an accident because I just could not see where the turn lane I was in was going, and they emailed me a week later saying they added it to their maintenance list for my district.

Funnily enough, I've reported mine via comments on one of their Facebook posts, but the response was the same as what you said above for the nine I recently reported, and the person who runs the Facebook account said they'd pass it along to the crew who takes care of that. The first three had no response, but got a like and got fixed. Before those, there were two I randomly reported to WSDOT via Messenger, one of those being the Cabin Creek Road exit with camping being ahead in one mile on eastbound I-90, which took a few months to get fixed, but it eventually got fixed. The one time I emailed them about something using Contact Us on the website, I never got a response. And I know they're busy, but Facebook seems to be a better place.

Anyway, I don't know what constitutes being fixed quickly in this context, but hopefully those I reported recently and those I will report in the future get fixed soon, too. :) I'll probably break them up so I don't report too many at once. I wish they had a forum, where you could post this stuff. That would be better organized than just emails or Facebook comments, and then they could be marked fixed.

A few I forgot to mention in my OP that I still need to report are:

1) The "Freeway Entrance" sign is missing on the left, both here at the junction of I-82 and the eastern terminus of WA 14 for the eastbound I-82 entrance: https://goo.gl/maps/Y2U28Wq2rvWTJiccA and 2) here at Thorp Highway for the eastbound entrance of I-90: https://goo.gl/maps/Rosy7PnoZScXihHo9 It was standing in 2021: https://goo.gl/maps/mTpw34MukSs7Lv2s9 The one at WA 14 is mangled laying on the ground, but I think the sign is still usable. Straighten the sign out with a little bit of hammering–it'll still look beaten up, but that way they don't have to make a new sign. I don't know if the metal post itself is still usable. The one at Thorp Highway is missing completely or it's somewhere on the ground where I cannot see it.

3) On Interstate 82 in both directions, at Exit 69, the 69 mileposts are both blank: https://goo.gl/maps/rbnmpjREnEAdCi2y5 (eastbound) and https://goo.gl/maps/hL5ddysyb5TRrUx37 (westbound). I'm pretty sure there was another blank milepost I saw somewhere in Washington, but I don't remember where or which highway.

How many people on here complain to NYSDOT about state shields for US routes in New York?

Is it possible this is intentional? That particular number is popular for theft. Kind of like Montana "accidentally" forgetting to replace mile marker 666 on US 2.

In some cases, we have reported the signs before they were even fabricated:

Caltrans contract 08-1F3724--errors found (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=18416.msg2435344#msg2435344)

Caltrans contract 08-1F3724--follow-up (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=18416.msg2439367#msg2439367)

We also had a member get in touch with Caltrans about proposed signs in District 7, resulting in changes (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=11603.msg299672#msg299672).

Other members have found the DOT to be resistant to suggestions, or not discovered they were adopted until they found the as-built plans with amended sheets.

A word of advice. Always use the official means provided to report issues. If it's an email address, a phone number, a Web form -- use those instead of social media messages, comments, or replies. When you use those official means, there's a record of the contact. In our case, if you use the Web form, an email is automatically generated to both Frankfort and the applicable highway district. And emails are public records and are discoverable in lawsuits or other legal actions, as state Board of Claims cases. Social media is very unofficial, and it's possible that your comment won't even be seen, or it will get lumped in with the myriad of spam comments that come in. Just the other day, we were bombed by spam comments by one of those fake profiles sending that "I like your profile, let's be friends" to every female who commented on a post.

It ended up working out these last couple of times, as mentioned, but I will look into giving the "Contact Us" another try when I report more signs. Looks like it's just a form now and no way to attach images in the initial message. But if they need more info, then I can reply to the email with images that way when they respond.

As discussed in the previous thread, which is almost identical to this one, I've contacted IDOT and the Illinois Tollway a few times to make corrections or changes to their signage. I could contact them more, but I feel like I would become annoying after a while if I kept doing that. I try to keep my requests to only the most critical, where a sign missing is genuinely detrimental for purposes of safety or guidance.

From the standpoint of not being a pest:

*  If the sign is reported before it is fabricated, the agency and its contractor both avoid abortive expense.

*  Formatting issues, like too little space padding between lines or (frustratingly) the three-quarters error, generally won't attract action.

*  Although it may seem petty to point them out, reporting spelling errors is a PR benefit for the agency since that helps them avoid being the focus of a "they don't know how to spell" news story once the signs are fabricated and installed.

And add this big green sign to the list of signs I need to report, though since this is in the city boundaries, it may be an Ellensburg thing. Not sure. It was literally standing the last time I saw it, which was early yesterday (Thursday) morning around 1:00 AM.

It's laying on the ground. I'll take another look during the day, but I could see at least one of the wooden posts snapped. They really need to maintain their signs and pay attention and look for things like like potential wood rot. Either that or get rid of the wooden posts and do all metal poles, which are already used for many signs.

It's not the first time this particular sign has needed repairs, either. This is the sign in 2012: https://goo.gl/maps/aejQUCiaks55afgA6

Related to the previous post, is this sort of practice normal in Washington state with marking ONLY on the pavement? I've never seen that done before.

Are you talking about the "only" text itself or "only" in general–text or arrows? Either way, it's fairly common, yeah.

Interesting fact about this roundabout is that not a lot of people know how it works. Coming from US 97, heading southbound, the right lane is a right-turn only lane, all the way from just before the roundabout to the freeway entrance after the turn, which you mentioned above. That's for traffic getting on I-90 westbound only. The left lane before the roundabout is for going left, straight, or right to go toward I-90 eastbound/US 97 southbound. I've had people cut me off quite a few times because I was heading to get on I-90 eastbound, so I was making a right turn from US 97 (to continue on US 97 toward the I-90/US 97 concurrency) via the left lane before the roundabout and people who were in the right-turn only lane merged left. Merging into that lane because you're coming from Dolarway Road or University Way is fine, but it is illegal to merge out of that lane.

Here's a picture I took of the one I mentioned earlier that fell over sometime yesterday. It was already leaning forward just a little bit to begin with. It didn't seem too bad, but I don't think the winds we had helped. I don't know when it started leaning, but it's probably been gradually getting worse.

If all signs had metal posts like this, which ironically has been missing the US 97 sticker for quite a while, which I should report at some point, I think that would be far better than the ones that use wooden posts: https://goo.gl/maps/93kKJM8nX3isAFADA If you look at the 2009 version, the sticker was there then, so it fell off sometime between then and 2012.

4) The "Right Lane Ends" sign before Exit 109 on westbound Interstate 90 fell over about a couple months ago and is laying on the ground: https://goo.gl/maps/cYTqUS5aUVWcDQNH8 It's after westbound Interstate 82 ends. The funny part here is that a while before that happened, one of the bolts for the sign fell off and the sign was upside down. That got fixed, but of course then this happened.

And since they're within the city where I live, here are pictures of these fallen over.

Quote from: Amaury on February 14, 2023, 02:43:56 AMOn January 20, 2023, I reported the following nine signs, which will hopefully be fixed soon.

1) The "Entering Yakima County" sign at the Kittitas County border on Interstate 82 westbound just before milepost 20 fell over or was knocked down sometime between November 29, 2022, and December 20, 2022. It was still standing on my drive to Haines, Oregon, on November 29, but it was down on my drive to Newberg, Oregon, on December 20. I find this one kind of ironic, considering #1 above: https://goo.gl/maps/MjAV8r6kb9X18qT26 It's hard to see, but it's laying on the ground next to the guardrail on the other side of the guardrail. (The most recent image is from September 2022, when it was still standing, so to clarify, I mean if you drive through there at the present time, you'll see it on the ground.)

4) The big sign here for Ellensburg/Yakima was knocked down a few months ago at the junction of WA 821 (Canyon Road) and Thrall Road: https://goo.gl/maps/tTYWREqJrUx3C98HA Somehow the posts are still standing. The pieces of the sign were on the ground, but they're gone now. Fun fact that I just discovered a few weeks ago is that this sign used to be a little more ways back, here, just on different posts: https://goo.gl/maps/dYiSyj1fu2ppocBH8 Google Maps doesn't have any images from 2013—2017 for this area, but in 2018, it was already moved, so it was moved sometime between 2012 and 2018: https://goo.gl/maps/EMGaYakeXewCNjZW6

I managed to get a couple photos of #1 yesterday:

And today I got a couple of #4:

*** BREAK ***

Now, today, I also got photos of a few more signs to add to the list of signs I need to report, if they're not already fixed before I have the chance to report them.

Both freeway entrance signs on the eastbound Interstate 90 entrance in Kittitas, Washington, are on the ground, with the one on the right a small ways away from where it actually goes.

Here is Google's latest image from September 2022, when they were both still standing: https://goo.gl/maps/RfCmY3PCtptiGm157

Also in Kittitas, the sign telling you which Interstate 90 entrance is which direction on the north side of the freeway, just before the westbound Interstate 90 entrance, has fallen over. My mom is the one who first noticed this one.

Milepost 14 on Interstate 82 eastbound is either missing or on the ground somewhere. This is it standing in November 2021: https://goo.gl/maps/BpRbqJW6D5VjNzzY8 Next time I drive that way, I'll pull over on the shoulder and drive slowly at milepost 13 to see if I can find it. I don't know how I would report a sign like this, though, since I would normally use a milepost as a reference point. LOL And it's not like the milepost 106 sign for Interstate 90 I mentioned a few posts above, which is now fixed, where I could have said Exit 106 for the reference point.

Similarly, milepost 114 is either missing or on the ground somewhere on Interstate 90 eastbound. This is it standing in October 2022, the latest image Google has: https://goo.gl/maps/LiSPCum7mv4AaqXDA

Noticed more signs on my drive today needing TLC.

Westbound Interstate 82, after milepost 97, the sign for Exit 96 being ahead in one mile is broken:

Also westbound Interstate 82, just before Exit 96 for West Richland and Benton City, a little bit after the sign above, the sign with detailed info on Exit 96 is also broken:

Southbound Washington State Route 243, a little ways after milepost 2, the sign for the Washington State Route 24 junction with Yakima and Othello being ahead in one mile (SR 243's southern terminus) is broken, and it looks like it was crashed into, as Google Maps' latest image from October 2022 also has it broken:

Also southbound Washington State Route 243, a little ways after milepost 13, just before Road 26 SW, the metal post that this recreation sign is on is heavily bent all the way to the ground:

Google Maps image from when it was not bent: https://goo.gl/maps/d4JKde1UASSYuFwr5

Milepost 100 on Interstate 82 westbound either disappeared or is on the ground somewhere. Here it is standing: https://goo.gl/maps/C9F8RPWsPuJKJZWD7 And if you look at it from the eastbound side, it has a more recent image from December 2022, which also shows it standing. So, whatever happened happened sometime after December 2022: https://goo.gl/maps/kUELQFsiTZEhjgQCA Although there you can see it leaning.

It seems I've made a mistake, which I've corrected in both my OP and my post above. The first set of pictures is actually the sign linked to above. The Tourist Activities sign *is* down (https://goo.gl/maps/Z3bqSgN9LULAD74bA), but the sign on the ground for that one is facing with the blue side up. I completely missed getting a picture of the Tourist Activities one, so I'll have to get a picture of it next time I'm in the area.

But that's interesting, that's three signs in a row in the area on westbound Interstate 82 that need repairs:

1) Exit 96 being ahead in 1 mile sign
2) Tourist Activities via Exit 96 sign
3) Exit 96 being right there sign–pretty much the same as 1, minus the 1 mile part, and with an arrow pointing to the right

I wish you were here! :3 Although I will assume WSDOT has the same kind of person who goes driving all across the state specifically looking for signs needing repairs/replacements like you and then passing that along to the sign crews. However, some signs in my state that have been on the ground or missing for a while have yet to be repaired or replaced. I've only noticed them recently myself, but looking at Google's images in different years, some have been like that for a while.

For example, this one:

Quote from: Amaury on February 14, 2023, 02:43:56 AMSigns I still need to report.

2) The "Entering Benton County" sign fell over or was knocked down at the Grant County border by the Vernita Bridge, at the southern terminus of WA 243: https://goo.gl/maps/b7mnmQpekWmTpAQN6 Sometime between October 2012 and June 2018.

That's one of the signs I was going to try and take a photo of on Tuesday from my aforementioned drive, but it's not on the ground and is missing entirely. But it wasn't a total waste stopping there, as I got beautiful photos of the sky and all that.

I wonder if DOTs of any state have a map showing where all signs are installed, because yeah, if you pass a sign that's all beat up or on the ground, you can obviously see it, unless maybe it's fully or partially obscured by a guardrail or something (like #1 in my OP of I signs I reported in January), but for signs that are missing entirely, you would just drive by those places without thinking anything of it. But if you have a sign map, then you would be like, "Hey, there's supposed to be a sign here!"

You'll be delighted to hear that FHWA required road agencies to have a sign database in place by June 2014, if I recall correctly (2015 maybe?).  That was about the time that my boss assigned me to be the arbiter of our road sign geodatabase.  I keep track of a map of all the road signs in my jurisdiction, and I edit it and add new information as things change.  That's the good news; the bad news for an interested member of the public like yourself is that this map/geodatabase is going to be for internal use only.  No road agency wants the general public to know how many errors and reports of folly are included in their database of road signs!

WSDOT is known for being rather progressive; I can almost guarantee that they have implemented some kind of database keeping track of all their signs posted in the field. Heck, I bet they go out there with a GPS that populates the database instantly or something.

I've also had to keep track of the retroreflectivity of signs, using a retroreflectometer to make sure the signs meet the visibility requirements posted on page 31 of the MUTCD (2009).

I guess I'll take this opportunity to ask this question since you're a DOT worker. If you know the answer, when any kind of sign–even a simple "Entering [City]" sign–is knocked down and it's within a city boundary and it's also on an interstate, US Route, or local state route, whose responsibility is it to fix it? (Obviously, if it were on city streets that aren't part of any route, then it's the city.) Is it the state DOT, the city, or can they both do it? Or if there's even a county option, can any of three fix it?

For example, this big sign on the right, which I mentioned earlier in this thread, fell over on the ground a few weeks ago: https://goo.gl/maps/EKrTXVGXpXdhEPR89 (That's when it was still standing.) It's heading south on US Route 97 through Ellensburg. I took a picture of it after it fell over on the ground:

So, who would fix this sign? WSDOT? The City of Ellensburg? Kittitas County? Or can any of them assume responsibility and fix it?

I know for Montana, MDT puts stickers on the back of their signs which show the dates they were posted. The stickers make it clear they own those signs and are responsible for their upkeep, even within town/city limits. Not so sure about WSDOT how that works, but would assume signs on state/US/Interstate highways are WSDOT responsibility.

EDIT: Looking at a couple of your pictures, it does look like WSDOT has an installation sticker on the back of some of the knocked-down signs.

When I lived in Maryland:

* SHA posted a bunch of signs along MD-140, MD-97, and MD-194 at various places in Carroll County that said "STATE LAW: STOP FOR SCHOOL BUS WHEN RED LIGHT FLASH" (sic.).  ALL of them had the same grammatical error.  I reported this to SHA, they responded to my email, and all of the signs were quickly fixed with a bolt-on panel reading "LIGHTS FLASH" that was bolted on top of "LIGHT FLASH," like this (https://www.google.com/maps/@39.5945331,-77.0376649,3a,15y,159.46h,89.07t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sG63oYssQbk9XadtQtVx9MA!2e0!5s20190801T000000!7i16384!8i8192).  As of August 2022, that one, at least, appears to have been completely replaced (https://www.google.com/maps/@39.5945654,-77.0376484,3a,15y,165.1h,90.39t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1swBTsNAwzJgEZ6gcVeS1gpg!2e0!5s20220701T000000!7i16384!8i8192).

* I reported a stop sign that had been knocked down on MD-84; SHA told me to report it to the State Police, so I did.

* This reassurance shield (https://www.google.com/maps/@39.591904,-77.0340446,3a,19.6y,153.71h,86.97t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s5neMVWAWmNA35aMsMUrT8A!2e0!7i16384!8i8192) on eastbound MD-140 after its intersection with MD-832 had suddenly been replaced with a reassurance shield for MD-832, as I noticed on my commute to work one morning.  I reported it as soon as I got to work.  SHA made no response to my email reporting it, but the error was fixed THE NEXT DAY.

Before I moved to Pennsylvania, but had started working here:

* The US-422 bridge over the Schuylkill River was being replaced when I first started working in PA, in a seemingly indefinite construction process.  At the time, I was staying in a hotel in Royersford during the week.  I noticed on my commute back to my hotel that this brand-new, APL BGS assembly (https://www.google.com/maps/@40.1090818,-75.4197714,3a,37.7y,0.82h,89.7t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1ssgHnrcdx82jSMaVcapjmRw!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DsgHnrcdx82jSMaVcapjmRw%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D211.17064%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192) had been installed, but it incorrectly marked the through lanes for PA-422.  I reported this to PennDOT.  It took a few weeks, but as you can see from the GMSV, the error was corrected.

After moving to PA:

* This school zone speed limit flasher (https://www.google.com/maps/@40.0282681,-75.2253047,3a,46.2y,249.7h,85.81t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sov5tMNc77aaeH2esFV_IQQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192) and this END SCHOOL ZONE (https://www.google.com/maps/@40.0278327,-75.2259567,3a,75y,264.05h,80.11t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sEzoadnLWrJ9kMhvV4teDJg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192) marker in my neighborhood are for a school that was converted to a residential apartment building several years ago (https://www.google.com/maps/@40.0280634,-75.225608,3a,47y,306.69h,88.38t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sDS86VZY_EvJ3zbpy0UJJ8w!2e0!7i16384!8i8192).  The flasher is no longer ever powered on.  Reported this to PennDOT, who referred me to the Philadelphia Streets Department.  Philly Streets never responded to my report.  I figured they could re-use the flasher and end signs somewhere else where there IS a school (maybe a new school, maybe an existing one).

Kentucky hasn't always used identifying stickers on the backs of its signs. Sometime during my adulthood Kentucky began putting stickers on with the date of installation and the typical "do not steal" language.

Now, Kentucky is getting away from doing that and is instead using barcoded stickers on the signs. I presume this is for the aforementioned database.

(Obviously, if it were on city streets that aren't part of any route, then it's obviously the city.) Is it the state DOT, the city, or can they both do it? Or if there's even a county option, can any of three fix it?

....

For what it's worth, that's the sort of thing that can vary greatly from state to state.

Overwhelmingly, though, the signs belong to the agency having jurisdiction over the road.  That will almost always be one particular agency.  If it's a marked state, US, or Interstate highway, it will be the state DOT. County roads belong to the county DOT.  In Illinois, where I live, we also have municipalities and townships.  Other local roads and streets will belong to the municipality unless you're in an unincorporated area, in which case it's the township.  There are a few exceptions to this; for example, stop signs along a state highway belong to the state even if it's traffic on a local road stopping at the stop sign.  Stop signs will be erected to "protect" the major road from local road traffic.  Street blade ownership varies wildly from region to region.

Quote from: FrCorySticha on March 09, 2023, 06:03:22 PMI know for Montana, MDT puts stickers on the back of their signs which show the dates they were posted.

That makes sense, which means state DOTs are responsible for signs on entrance and exit ramps as well, like stop ahead signs or freeway entrance signs, as I saw those stickers with dates on the fallen over freeway entrance signs I mentioned on the previous page. I've recently learned about the stickers myself. So even this "Entering Quincy" sign and the sign below it are the responsibility of WSDOT since I can see stickers on the back of it, not the city of Quincy or Grant County: https://goo.gl/maps/6YWh8FWrSFG7RScM6 The "Entering Quincy" sign is currently missing or on the ground somewhere and the post it was on with the remaining sign is leaning to the right itself. I don't know when it happened, but it was sometime after that Google image in 2018.

Although even with signs like that being the responsibility of the state DOT, I wonder if it stops, say, the city from fixing them if it's just a simple matter of getting a new post, moving the signs on the broken post to the new post, and digging a new hole for the new post. This milepost 106 sign on eastbound Interstate 90 in Ellensburg, which I mentioned earlier in this thread, fell over a few weeks ago, but has since been fixed: https://goo.gl/maps/Wj6b35byyC69fhYn7 I find it interesting that that would be fixed, but not the big sign I mentioned above, which is right there in the same area, but off the freeway on US 97. You can't see it from the freeway, but if you look at that semi on the overpass, from their perspective, you would see the back of the sign. So, I was wondering if maybe the city or county could have fixed the milepost 106 sign, but I'm just speculating, as I never saw it being fixed. I just noticed it was still down one night after work and then the next day it was fixed. For the big sign, it's possible they're just waiting since I imagine it would require equipment to fix since the sign is so big.

So, this sign would be responsibility of either the city of Ellensburg or Kittitas County: https://goo.gl/maps/ysJt3FhQDJnV61jTA There are also no stickers on the back of it, which would be more evidence it's not WSDOT. It's on a local road known as University Way, where straight ahead is the roundabout that US 97 goes through. The sign is missing the US 97 "sticker" or whatever it's called. If you look at the 2009 version, even though it's bad quality, you can tell it was there: https://goo.gl/maps/LYoq1iLCrs2sN5pA7 It disappeared sometime after then.

EDIT: Also mentioned on the previous page, these signs, which are currently fallen over on the ground, interestingly appear to be the responsibility of WSDOT since there are stickers on the back of them, the green one being from 1999 and the no left turn one being from 2014, even though they're on a local road known as Main Street in Kittitas, which is obviously not a state, US, or interstate highway: https://goo.gl/maps/vxhf4JjjfFdrP5W77

State shields mean very little about who owns and/or maintains the road.

In this case, it's signage put up by WSDOT as part of the interchange with I-90. As you mentioned, most of the signage at interchanges with interstate highways is handled by the state DOT.

As an example of a sign owned by another authority, it's likely these JCT I-90 signs were posted by either the town of Kittitas or Kittitas County. https://goo.gl/maps/EJyZLP7JTk3xPKqo7 https://goo.gl/maps/ZXduqwKui1D5eP718

Except when IDOT just doesn't do that. I can think of numerous locations by me where the side street stop sign was erected by local jurisdiction.

I also contacted IDOT within the past few months regarding an error on a guide sign posted on one of their signals. They responded saying since it faces the side street, it's the local jurisdiction's responsibility. Which is odd, since I've seen IDOT replace street name signs at signals even for the non-IDOT roads at intersections. Sometimes, not always. It's inconsistent.

Quote from: Amaury on February 14, 2023, 02:43:56 AM20) On westbound Interstate 82, just after milepost 97, the sign that says Exit 96 is ahead in one mile needs repairs. You can see where the posts are–not sure if they're broken or not–and you can also see where the sign fell off in the grass.

Here it is when it was still standing: https://goo.gl/maps/a5upq55s2Br8UoGx5

This one is fixed.

And I saw them working on this one for Tourist Activities around 1:15—1:30 PM, which I forgot to get a photo of last time. They were still working on the poles, but I'll consider that fixed: https://goo.gl/maps/7Wjq45psHEfUzLuR9

Quote from: Amaury on February 14, 2023, 02:43:56 AM21) A little ways after the sign above on #20, on westbound Interstate 82, just before Exit 96, the sign with detailed info on Exit 96 is broken.

Here it is when it was still standing: https://goo.gl/maps/zEHayXtFJhRRxtAg9

And, presumably, after the Tourist Activities one, they went to/will work on this one. I will go down there again in the next few days and confirm.

Funny that some of the ones I've documented, but haven't yet reported, have gotten/are getting fixed, but the ones I did report haven't, at least not yet. The "Entering Yakima County" sign is the biggest one for me personally since I drive by there more often, followed probably by the "Entering Benton County" sign, both on I-82 eastbound. But either way, shoutout to WSDOT! They are awesome! Too bad there isn't a WSDOT employee who's a member here. LOL

4) The Interstate 90 shield is facing the wrong direction, on westbound Interstate 90 after Exit 47: https://goo.gl/maps/Xmf8L7vcPtfuJ6wx8

5) The Trucks 60 sign on the right post is crooked, on eastbound Interstate 90 after milepost 72: https://goo.gl/maps/1jjULJR58LXGg1L19

Here it is when it was not crooked: https://goo.gl/maps/QBE2nUWe76hztBVe9

8) The Exit 80 sign at the gore point for eastbound Interstate 90 was knocked down and is laying on the ground: https://goo.gl/maps/AuJ9QqqcwdMsrMMJ6 It's also an important exit since it's an exit that vehicles carrying watercraft have to take.

9) Just a bit farther up east after Exit 80 on eastbound Interstate 90, both speed limits signs are crooked here: https://goo.gl/maps/NW9CV6FkSnchJjut9

Here they are when they were both straight: https://goo.gl/maps/w7nToTtSZcGFN1fa9

Here it is when both sides were still standing, as, at one point, it was the post on the right that was on the ground: https://goo.gl/maps/rKCr33fWSrzwVaBW9

I've also got some new ones, which were all taken yesterday as well, with the exception of the one at I-82 Exit 96 directly below, which was taken on Sunday.

1) and 2) In Benton City, Washington (I-82 Exit 96), this big and tall sign here just before the eastbound Interstate 82 entrance needs new Interstate 82 shield stickers. You can make it out in person, but just barely. All of Google Maps' image versions have the shields faded, so I can't post a last known good image. In that same area, both "Freeway Entrance" signs for that eastbound Interstate 82 entrance need to be replaced, as they are not there. I had to go back to an image from 2012, so they fell over or were knocked over sometime between September 2012 and October 2018: https://goo.gl/maps/kDjUryB3fCVGEC1D7

12) At the western terminus of Washington State Route 906, where eastbound Interstate 90 Exit 52 is, the Tourist Activities sign needs some attention. 18) This one is located before #7 above, but I didn't notice this one until after the fact. On eastbound Interstate 90 after milepost 38–or before milepost 39 since milepost 38 is currently either on the ground or missing on the eastbound side–the "Right Lane Ends" sign on the right is not there and needs to be replaced: https://goo.gl/maps/3kZTKkTVTLG6SHLy6

When it was still standing: https://goo.gl/maps/Hh6Z8MqRhuM2FBDU6

EDIT: There are also a few exit signs missing at the gore point in the Interstate 90 corridor between Ellensburg and Issaquah in both directions, but I didn't take photos since they were either not there at all or only the very bottom of the wooden post base was still standing. Likewise for missing mileposts.

Not sure. It was literally standing the last time I saw it, which was early yesterday (Thursday) morning around 1:00 AM.

https://goo.gl/maps/AmAPHMbeVmhGavdG6

It's laying on the ground. I'll take another look during the day, but I could see at least one of the wooden posts snapped. They really need to maintain their signs and pay attention and look for things like like potential wood rot. Either that or get rid of the wooden posts and do all metal poles, which are already used for many signs.

It's not the first time this particular sign has needed repairs, either. This is the sign in 2012: https://goo.gl/maps/aejQUCiaks55afgA6

This one is fixed.  :D

And now one of the curve posts here for the curve at I-90 Exit 109 eastbound is down... yet again: https://goo.gl/maps/gEBLqkEzwVjS13V4A There are a total of six; only five are standing currently. This doesn't include the one with the recommended speed. I'm only talking about the ones after that one, of which, as mentioned, there are six. Ironically, that Google capture has one of them down.

Three or four of them were down at one point. Actually, at two points, both last year. Once when they fell over naturally and one time before that when a semi lost control last year on the curve and knocked them over.

On the NJDOT site:  If it's a Stop sign, they will take those reports seriously and send a crew out same day or next day to get it repaired.  I've been on the reporting end and the knock-down end of those.

Nearly anything else, the reports come back so quick that they've been "fixed" that they're clearly just being dismissed, and they really don't care about them. And no, the sign wasn't fixed.

On the county end, I used to write the county engineer about certain signage, and he would have his crews go out and fix or replace the signage fairly quickly.  I haven't written him for a while, although there is some signage out there that does need replacing.

The nice thing about wooden 4x4 posts is they are relatively cheap and easily replaceable. Unfortunately, most DOT crews are not as cheap and replaceable.

Quote from: Amaury on February 14, 2023, 02:43:56 AMOn January 20, 2023, I reported the following nine signs, which will hopefully be fixed soon.

5) and 6) The left panel for Washington State Route 194 Almota is missing on both of these signs. The first is on US Route 195 northbound after milepost 21: https://goo.gl/maps/sBJ2SVik4GrDpRif7 And the second one is just a little farther north on the same route at the intersection with Washington State Route 194/Old Wawawai Road: https://goo.gl/maps/vjpgZSpcMBx8YHa77

Both of these are fixed. I don't know if it's because of my Facebook comment or a coincidence, since ones like the Yakima County one still aren't fixed since I last drove by them. (And don't get me wrong, I know they're busy and appreciate everything they do, just pointing that out.) But they're fixed, and that's all that matters.

I also found some new ones along Washington State Route 26 today. Milepost 39 isn't straight and is leaning: https://goo.gl/maps/kVBEW2nwpbbbSgfg6 That's where it used to be. It's somewhere on the right side next to a fence now, just outside of Othello city limits. And there are a few other mileposts that are near-completely faded. You can still see the numbers, but barely. (There's one mile marker like that on Interstate 90 eastbound after crossing the Vantage Bridge along the hill. It's completely white and nothing can be seen.) Back to WA 26, there's also one post that has a mile marker and another sign on it, and it is missing that other sign. One of the posts on the Interstate 90 westbound entrance ramp from WA 26 is missing its black and yellow caution arrow. If I recall, it's the second one here: https://goo.gl/maps/Rp3Kch6TkkmmNJUGA It looks like a big strong gust of wind found a weak spot and tore it off, as where it screws in the post, there are still some black and yellow bits there.

This overpass sign on the left on Interstate 82 westbound before the last exit was recently vandalized by some lowlife: https://goo.gl/maps/ibAwfZYnnnB4QE169 Thankfully, everything can still be made out, but it's now got ugly spray paint on it. Something to add to signs I need to report when I email WSDOT.

There's one sign I never even mentioned here that recently got fixed. Just after Vantage on Interstate 90 westbound, this post was missing something, which you can see on the ground here: https://goo.gl/maps/TR8kmk72212ytckT8 It's this sign (2021 capture): https://goo.gl/maps/HjfvuuuSxpy7gpqQ9

I just sent my first official report using WSDOT's official email. Hbelkins will be proud!

I mostly focused on the eastern side of the state in this report. I will get the other ones I've mentioned later. For some, I'm also waiting for the snow to melt in the Snoqualmie Pass area, since a lot of those are obvious and might get fixed after the snow melts without having to report them.

But these are the ones I reported in this batch.

QuoteHello, there! There are several signs I've noticed needing repairs around the state, and I wanted to report some of those today. I've attached a link below to my Imgur with an album with photos for some of the signs to make it easier. :)

The photos in this album are in the same order that I've reported and listed them below: https://imgur.com/a/vJBAmTA

1.   On Interstate 82 eastbound, just before milepost 20, your "Entering Yakima County"  sign has fallen over on the ground due to wood rot. It's hard to see just driving by, but it's lying on the ground on the other side of the guardrail. Looks like it just needs a new post. (See album photo, titled "Entering Yakima County." )
2.   In Kittitas (I-90 Exit 115), there are three signs that fell over due to wood rot. The signs themselves seem to be fine, they just need new posts. Both of your "Freeway Entrance"  signs on the eastbound entrance ramp for Interstate 90 are lying on the ground next to the roadway. For the other one, just before the westbound entrance for Interstate 90, your big sign that says to turn right for Ellensburg or go straight for Spokane is also lying on the ground. There's also a smaller no left turn sign attached to one of the posts. (See album photo for the big one, titled "Kittitas I-90 Westbound Entrance." )
3.   On Washington State Route 821 southbound, at its Canyon Road and Thrall Road junction in Kittitas County, your sign that says to turn right for Ellensburg or left for Yakima to continue south with an SR 821 shield was crashed into and mangled near the end of last year and needs to be replaced, though one of the posts is still standing. (See album photo from when it was still standing, titled "SR 821 at Thrall and Canyon Road in Kittitas County." )
4.   Your "Entering Benton County"  sign needs to be replaced in two locations. On Interstate 82 eastbound, just after milepost/Exit 75 at the Yakima County border by the entrance ramp. Then on Washington State Route 24 westbound, just after milepost 44, before crossing the Vernita Bridge at the Grant County border.
5.   On Interstate 90 eastbound, after Exit 54, your sign with the control cities of Cle Elum, Ellensburg, and Spokane and the number of miles to reach them was mangled in the 2021—22 winter before completely falling off, though one of its posts is still standing, and needs to be replaced. (See album photo from when it was still standing, titled "I-90 EB Control Cities After Exit 54." )
6.   On Interstate 90 eastbound, at Exit 80, your "Exit 80"  sign itself in the gore point is lying on the ground.
7.   On Interstate 90 eastbound, at milepost 114, your milepost 114 sign itself is lying on the ground. (See album photo, titled "I-90 Eastbound Milepost 114." )
8.   On Interstate 90 westbound, at the Ryegrass Summit rest area, just after milepost 126, your "Right Lane Ends"  signs on both sides of the roadway are lying on the ground. (See album photos, titled "I-90 WB Right Lane Ends Right Side"  and "I-90 WB Right Lane Ends Left Side." )
9.   On US Route 97 southbound, at the US Route 2 and US Route 97 interchange in Chelan County, what used to be known as The Big Y, your overpass sign on the left is missing the top-left panel, the portion containing the "East US 2"  part. (See album photo facing south on US Route 97, titled "US 97 Missing Overpass Panel in Chelan County." )
10.   On Washington State Route 243 southbound, just a little bit after milepost 2 in Grant County, your sign that says that the Washington State Route 24 junction for Yakima and Othello is ahead in one mile was crashed into last year. The sign itself seems to still be intact and likely just needs new posts. (See album photo, titled "Yakima and Othello Junction." )
11.   On Interstate 82 westbound, after milepost 1 at the final exit before Interstate 82 westbound terminates, the I-90 shield on the overhead sign is heavily faded and needs a new one. (See album photo, titled "Faded I-90 Shield." )
12.   In Benton City (I-82 Exit 96), at the eastbound entrance ramp for Interstate 82, both of your "Freeway Entrance"  signs need to be replaced, as they have been missing for a while, it seems. Also, at that same entrance, your big and tall sign that says to turn right for Richland or go straight for Yakima needs new Interstate 82 shield "stickers"  or whatever they're called, as the current ones are extremely faded. (See album photo, titled "Benton City Signs" .)

Hope to see these fixed soon when you guys have a chance. I've been taking regular drives for a few years now and have become a road/sign enthusiast, I guess you could say. I'm also detail oriented, so it's easy for me to notice when signs are lying on the ground, broken, or missing, and it also makes me a little sad. LOL Thank you very much for all the hard work you guys do around the state for everyone living here. I've already seen a few signs I was going to report fixed before I had a chance to report them. :)

All the best and have a great day,
Amaury

EDIT: And it was marked as read this morning. :D

So, I got a response yesterday from the person in charge of the South-Central region, one of six regions in the state, that those signs will be fixed in the coming weeks. :D And, actually, #10 on the list above has already been fixed. I noticed it on my way to Richland yesterday. It's on metal posts now instead of wooden ones.

Anyway, she explained that their traffic office checks signs in that region at least every two years for condition and reflexivity, but they also check the two post signs after winter for winter damage, though I'm not exactly sure what she meant by "two post signs." They are currently doing that now. She thanked me for providing locations and photos. I provided photos for the ones that weren't easy to just explain. In another reply, she said that they do have a database, but it is very helpful to have citizens report downed signs or missing signs needing replacement sooner than DOT can get to.

A couple of others have also been fixed, so I've removed them from the OP, including this one on I-82, just after MP 58: https://goo.gl/maps/yW1sf21v5C4HUawH8 There's now a new I-82 shield, though it's of this newer design: https://goo.gl/maps/ZsPSS8iFuw939Hff8 Compared to what was on there before: https://goo.gl/maps/D4LjdXzZQ437qRZLA

The replacement was kind of being moved by the wind blowing, which I found kind of cool.
Title: Re: Signs You've Reported to DOT That Were Repaired/Put Back Up

I noticed earlier today that this one is fixed: https://goo.gl/maps/iFK4nrVkf99mc8ss9 :D It looks like it falling down due to wood rot was a long time coming since you can see it leaning to the left in that Google Maps capture, like the wood on that side had already partially collapsed, and it had been like that for years. Maybe I'm wrong, though, but that's what it looks like to me.

Interestingly enough, though, these are still on the ground on the eastbound entrance for I-90, which are just across the bridge: https://goo.gl/maps/fVvigdmvi2dy7kgeA However, I know they have their way of doing things, and they'll probably come back another time to fix those. Just like when this sign was fixed: https://goo.gl/maps/5xjugkQhvEimCCdw7 They came back the day after and put this one on new posts, which had been leaning backward for years: https://goo.gl/maps/SdcjhQF8La7rnFWV8 Instead of just doing it that same day. And something interesting that I just realized about where the "Freeway Entrance" signs for I-90 eastbound in Kittitas are is that looking at my photo and comparing it to that Google Maps capture, there didn't used to be guardrails there for the eastbound I-90 entrance in Kittitas.

Anyway, another guess is that because the "Freeway Entrance" signs on the westbound look like they're damaged at the posts (https://goo.gl/maps/mZbXDLf8NXD16f4q7), maybe they're just planning on coming back and putting all four of them on new posts–the two still standing and two on the ground. That photo doesn't do them justice, as it's from October 2022, as they look a little worse now.

Also, the "Entering Yakima County" sign still isn't fixed as of when I drove by earlier today; however, it's no longer lying on the ground, either. I think that's promising and likely means it's getting fixed. According to a friend of mine, who's the one who initially saw it on the ground after I had noticed it wasn't up anymore (but didn't notice it on the ground myself until after she said something, which is when I took the photo) and has noticed other signs needing repairs, it was still lying on the ground yesterday. So, my guess is they had to do more than just move the sign over to a new post, so sometime after my friend saw it still lying on the ground yesterday, they picked it up and took it back with them to fix it. When it's fixed, they'll bring it back to the spot where it goes with it already on the new post and install it in the ground. That's my best guess. Will have to wait and see. When the "Entering Kittitas County" sign on the other side fell down or whatever, I never actually saw it lying on the ground, but I also never pulled over to look, either, as back then, I wasn't as interested in signs as I am today. When it was fixed in July 2022, I didn't see WSDOT fixing it or how it was fixed, either. I was just driving by on July 26, 2022, and noticed it was fixed. So, I don't know if when that one was fixed, if it was fixed right there "on location," so to speak, or if they took it back with them to fix it and then brought it back already on a new post to install it in the ground.

EDIT: Google Maps was being weird earlier. Here's the most recent capture for the "Freeway Entrance" signs in Kittitas for I-90 eastbound with the guardrail: https://goo.gl/maps/eYT1SYeEHZzN4sRt5

Drove down to Vantage and back earlier just to curiously see if those RLE signs I mentioned at the westbound I-90 Ryegrass Summit were fixed–they haven't been yet, which is fine–and noticed that at Exit 136 eastbound, the Exit 136 sign itself in the gore point fell off its post and is lying face down on the ground. It was still on the post when I drove down to Richland on Tuesday, so it happened just within the last few days: https://goo.gl/maps/YeyHDbWQHgzteFJm8 I wasn't able to take a picture this time, as I noticed it late and was already a ways down on the exit ramp. It's pretty obvious, though, and will maybe be fixed before I even report it, like some signs I've mentioned here being fixed without me doing a thing.

Imgur seems to be having problems right now, as I can't get to my images to upload new ones. Never mind. Imgur decided to update their interface design and make things less user friendly. I just switched back to the old design.

4) On eastbound Interstate 90 after milepost 72, the Trucks 60 sign on the right post is crooked.

Here it is when it was not crooked: https://goo.gl/maps/QBE2nUWe76hztBVe9

5) On eastbound Interstate 90 after Exit 74, the Trucks 60 sign on the right post is facing the wrong direction–it's facing to the left instead of toward the driver: https://goo.gl/maps/4UaseufMkqyc8qUH7 You can see it better from this angle: https://goo.gl/maps/L6Rra4wx73KYZWSh8

Here it is when it was facing the correct direction: https://goo.gl/maps/ujUzvPLywgRBsqtE7

7) The Exit 80 sign at the gore point for eastbound Interstate 90 was knocked down and is laying on the ground: https://goo.gl/maps/AuJ9QqqcwdMsrMMJ6 It's also an important exit since it's an exit that vehicles carrying watercraft have to take.

Here it is when it was still standing: https://goo.gl/maps/kGYcqrvneNHM9w2J6

10) On eastbound Interstate 90 before Exit 71, the post with the set of speed limit signs on the left is laying on the ground: https://goo.gl/maps/iWyUobvEmENTTCst5

Here it is when both sides were still standing, as, at one point, it was the post on the right that was on the ground: https://goo.gl/maps/rKCr33fWSrzwVaBW9

23) On westbound Interstate 90 at Exit 63, the "Exit 63" sign itself at the gore point is heavily leaning backward.

#4 seems to have been fixed a little bit, but I'll leave it listed for the time being. It's still crooked, but facing the driver more straight now. The rest have all been fixed. Ironically, however, for #26, just ahead, the sign with the picture of the right lane ending (instead of words) on the left side needs repairs now. I think it's laying on the ground. I came back through there yesterday, but wasn't in the leftmost lane at the time, so couldn't tell. I just didn't see it there: https://goo.gl/maps/GcD24qnpZAUb1ej29

I also think the "Entering Kittitas County" sign at the Snoqualmie Pass summit on I-90 eastbound may have fallen over or been knocked down, but I may have just missed it since I was passing a semi at the time and my windshield was a little dirty: https://goo.gl/maps/PD9jwdhZo6PwaY6f9 I'll have to go back up there to confirm. I need to see if some or all of the signs I mentioned on SR 906 have been fixed yet, anyway.

Looking at Google Maps, this isn't the first time that particular sign had to be fixed. This is in October 2018: https://goo.gl/maps/JherE1RLKDAG6v3j9

And pardon my ignorance, but what's cyclic loading?

EDIT: And looks like it was first installed sometime in 2012 after July, sometime in 2013, or sometime in 2014 before September. There are no image captures for 2013, but this is in September 2014: https://goo.gl/maps/NJhE9yeShyfuAAoT8 And it's not there in the July 2012 capture.

Likewise for the Kittitas County signpost on I-90 westbound on the Vantage Bridge.

I've noticed that it's looked like the wood has been rotting for a while at the bottom. Add in our recent winds, and it's not a great combination. This sign on US 97 southbound in Ellensburg before the roundabout between mileposts 135 and 134 was still standing last week. You can see part of the wood in the ground still.

Quote from: Amaury on February 14, 2023, 02:43:56 AMOn January 20, 2023, I reported the following nine signs, which will hopefully be fixed soon.

4) The big sign here for Ellensburg/Yakima was knocked down a few months ago at the junction of Washington State Route 821 (Canyon Road) and Thrall Road. Somehow the posts are still standing. The pieces of the sign were on the ground, but they're gone now.

Personal photo: https://i.imgur.com/XtWjgDE.jpg

Here it is when it was still standing: https://goo.gl/maps/tTYWREqJrUx3C98HA

Note: This one is fixed.

A lot of the ones I reported on January 20 via Facebook are ones I re-reported officially in April. And this one is now fixed. :D

There was an ugly county-fabricated US-24 confirmation shield in Southfield just past the M-10/I-696 interchange.  It inexplicably was changed to an incorrect M-24 shield.  I reported it to MDOT and was notified a couple days later that a staff member had driven by and confirmed the error.  It took a few months but it was finally corrected...  with another ugly county-fabricated US-24 shield.

Quote from: Amaury on February 14, 2023, 02:43:56 AMSigns I still need to report.

16) Milepost 100 on Interstate 82 westbound is either missing or on the ground somewhere. Here it is standing: https://goo.gl/maps/C9F8RPWsPuJKJZWD7 And if you look at it from the eastbound side, Google Maps has a more recent image on that side from December 2022, which also shows it standing: https://goo.gl/maps/kUELQFsiTZEhjgQCA Although there you can see it leaning. So, whatever happened to it happened sometime after December 2022.

Coming back from Twin Falls, I managed to find this one on the ground and get a photo of it. The area around it is burned from a fire that happened at some point–don't know when–but there are no signs on the wooden post that it was burned, so I don't know what caused it to break.

I think these are in the process of being fixed, as they are no longer laying on the ground. Shortly after I made my official report, the Yakima County sign was picked up by DOT, and about a month later, it was fixed. I don't know how long these will take–no rush, of course–but I think the same thing has happened here, and they're in the process of being fixed.

On Interstate 90 eastbound, just before milepost and Exit 115, this Tourist Activities sign is broken. This happened sometime between April 12, 2022, and April 19, 2022, as it was still standing on my drive on the former date, but was broken when I passed through there again on my next drive on the latter date.

This is when it was still standing: https://goo.gl/maps/gAUk9pCcLPUSqxT98 However, it wasn't filled like that and was just a blank sign with only the Tourist Activities part, like on the westbound side: https://goo.gl/maps/NZR5HoeDJSy5PpjP6

On Interstate 90 westbound, at milepost 136, the milepost 136 sign itself needs repairs.

When it was still standing: https://goo.gl/maps/1y9U9yFg3jpuPWEq8 I flipped it over and turned it around so I could take a good photo of it, but I don't know how it got all the way by the post with the white sign. However, while it's a bit past it, where it is on the ground now lines up a little better with the eastbound one that's still up, as the gap is smaller.

On US Route 2, before milepost 112 at the light, this museum sign needs repairs.

On Interstate 90 eastbound, before Exit 53, the Snoqualmie Pass elevation sign needs to be repaired/replaced: https://goo.gl/maps/q2F9u8ortzmw3Jya9 It was down in the 2021 capture, so whatever happened was sometime after that 2019 capture. You can see one of the posts on the ground here, with what looks to be part of a sign attached to it: https://goo.gl/maps/VacNAoz9URqa2yoKA

The westbound elevation sign needs to be replaced as well, but even looking at earlier Google Maps captures, I can't tell where it's supposed to be at. I even tried looking for it farther east where you first crest the hill going westbound.

On Interstate 82 eastbound before Exit 30, there was a crash sometime after June 28, the last time I went by the area, and everything was fine then.

Take note of what things look like here:

Now, I just drove down there today to check out the fire damage from a fire yesterday that burned in the area–not in the direct area, but in the county. After milepost 20 on eastbound I-82, there's an area that's all black. I went to turn around at Exit 30, and what do I see?

Funny part was that on the way down there, it was still needing repairs, and it was fixed when I came back through the area at the base of Satus Pass on the north side of the summit. I did see DOT vehicles in the pullout here heading south: https://goo.gl/maps/AmqL4UTret2bHEgdA There's also been a paving project going in the area the last few weeks, and given it was obvious, there's no they could have missed it while working on the road. I didn't check to see if they fixed the one on the southbound side, at the end of the pullout seen in the link earlier in this paragraph, where the "d" in Goldendale is virtually non-existent.

EDIT: Checked my video. Heading south the other sign was already fixed. :)

I do note that the shoulder was closed there today, so I couldn't pull over to take a personal photo like I was planning, and I saw a front loader with a scoop there, so I wonder if they were fixing it.

On Interstate 90 westbound, just a bit farther up from that severe side wind sign, the overhead sign for Exit 137 needs to be repaired: https://goo.gl/maps/Yhv48QW9TPBU5AXL7

This is also not the first time this sign has needed repairs. See here in September 2008: https://goo.gl/maps/aKriJgCMPgoDznabA

This is technically on Interstate 90, I guess, where Interstate 82 westbound terminates and becomes an entrance ramp for Interstate 90 westbound. This is before Interstate 90 milepost 110 or before Interstate 90 Exit 109. I'm attempting a report with NJDOT, although I won't be terribly surprised if they cancel it or immediately claim it's resolved.

This portable VMS sign on 295 South at MP 24.1 has been here since 2022. It simply reads 'Road Work Ahead', blinks off then the message again: https://maps.app.goo.gl/5jKKtNFkBiZwaSeY9 . There's no road work south of this location. It's questionable if there is ever any road work attributable to the sign. The only road work on 295 since the sign has been located here was an ongoing project at Exit 4, about 20 miles to the south that didn't cause any congestion. There's no road work on the ramps or exits either south of here. So whoever placed a sign here either did it accidentally, or maybe it was stolen and dropped there. Who knows.

The NJDOT reporting page doesn't want stories like this, so I had to summarize it onto 200 characters. I'll see if they actually look onto it.

And as I suspected. I received an automated email at 4:04pm stating "This is to notify that your problem request has been completed. Thank you. Regards, New Jersey Department of Transportation Motorist Assistance".

My original notice was received at 12:46pm.  Took all of 3 hours and 18 minutes to close the ticket, without any explanation or acknowledgement of what I mentioned.  When I drove by the area at 5:14pm, the sign was still there.

Unfortunately, this has been how NJDOT operates over the past few years.  Submit a problem request; have it immediately closed.  The only one they took seriously was a downed Stop Sign.  It had been knocked down a few days prior.  After my submission, it was fixed same day.  Otherwise, if it's a speed limit sign, missing directional/route sign, or like in this case, a concern about a sign that has been there for about 9 months with no road work occurring, they close the ticket and wipe their hands free of the issue.

On Interstate 82 westbound after milepost 28, the sign saying that SR 821 is closed to commercial trucks May 15—September 15 needs repairs. Looking back at my videos, it was still standing on my drive to Haines, Oregon, on November 29, 2022, and it was lying on the ground on my drive to Newberg, Oregon, on December 20, 2022. So, it fell sometime between those dates.

You mentioned responses are automated. I wonder if it's not an actual human closing the ticket, but an AI algorithm that looks for certain parameters in the message with regard to urgency and other things, and if a certain amount of those parameters are "false," them it automatically closes the ticket. Similar to YouTube's algorithm for copyright music being found in videos being automatic, which is sometimes wrong. I don't know, though, especially since I don't live there. Just a guess.

So this is an interesting development. I came home from a trip around 10pm Monday night. The sign was gone! So I guess NJDOT did investigate it and figured out whose portable VMS unit it was.

The closure of the report shouldn't have occurred when it did (IMO) but it must've at least been sent to the right department to be taken care of.

The post containing a "Ramp Metered When Flashing" and beacon on the left side of this on ramp (https://goo.gl/maps/CuWpHCrHSW1Q9ZEz6) was hit by a vehicle during one of our snowstorms in January 2023, and had remained there on the ground there for some time. I finally reported it on an NDOT online service request form in late May 2023, and it had been repaired within less than two weeks.

That's awesome!

There was a similar incident here in my state last week on the 23rd, though it's not a sign I've reported. A semi going westbound on Interstate 82 took Exit 96 for Benton City too fast and couldn't make the roundabout. I don't know how, but it only managed to take out the crosswalk sign on the left, the one with the right-pointing arrow: https://goo.gl/maps/xcZMm77LPMncoLVq5

Story here: https://www.nbcrightnow.com/news/semi-truck-rollover-crash-spills-wine-all-over-sr-225-and-i-82-off-ramp/article_1494f2ce-41e6-11ee-9dad-1bee8ede7bc1.html

There are cones around where the sign was, so since WSDOT helped clean up the mess, they obviously know about it.

Quote from: Amaury on July 21, 2023, 07:52:04 PMOn Interstate 82 eastbound before Exit 30, there was a crash sometime after June 28, the last time I went by the area, and everything was fine then.

Now, I didn't read about whatever crash in the news, I just stumbled upon it today when I drove down there, but I have a high suspicion that it was caused by a drunk driver.  :banghead:

As mentioned, the smaller sign and the light pole had already been repaired, and now the big sign for Exit 30 has been repaired! So, everything from whatever crash is repaired now! Yay!

Quote from: Amaury on August 14, 2023, 07:19:43 PMOn Interstate 82 westbound after milepost 28, the sign saying that SR 821 is closed to commercial trucks May 15—September 15 needs repairs. Looking back at my videos, it was still standing on my drive to Haines, Oregon, on November 29, 2022, and it was lying on the ground on my drive to Newberg, Oregon, on December 20, 2022. So, it fell sometime between those dates.

I have submitted my second official report to the WSDOT email. These are the signs I reported in this one.

QuoteHello again, [REDACTED FOR PRIVACY]! I hope you are doing well. First, I just wanted to say thank you so much to you and your crew, as a lot of the signs from my first report back in April have been repaired or replaced. Only a few remain, and I think two of those are already in the process of being repaired, as I noticed they were picked up a few months ago in Kittitas by your sign crew. I guess now it's just a matter of finding the time and such.

Anyway, before significant snow starts falling and it halts construction projects for you guys, as well as sign repairs, for the season, I wanted to go ahead and submit one more report this year of more signs needing repairs. Some have been needing repairs for a while, and some happened after my last report. Just like last time, I have created an album on my Imgur with photos (in the same order as below) of the signs needing repairs for your crew to use: https://imgur.com/a/A3gQ7gG

Some of the photos come from Google Maps. There will be a button at the bottom of the album to load the last four images.

1.   On Interstate 90 Westbound, after milepost 140, just past the viewpoint, your yellow cautionary signs warning semis of the 5% grade and the 50 MPH curve at the bottom of the hill on both sides of the freeway need to be repaired. The one on the left is laying facedown on the ground, where you can also see the supports still standing, and the one on the right needs to be replaced, as only the cement bases are there. I have provided two photos for this one, one when they were both still standing and one in their current state. See the album photos titled "Interstate 90 Westbound After Milepost 140 Cautionary Before" and "Interstate 90 Westbound After Milepost 140 Cautionary Currently."

2.   On Interstate 90 Westbound, just before Exit 137, there are two signs that need repairs. Your "Severe Side Wind Ahead for 2 Miles" sign, and then on your gantry, your overhead sign on the right for Exit 137 is missing two panels on the top-right, the panels containing "137" and "TO." For both signs, see the album photo titled "Interstate 90 Westbound Before Exit 137."

3.   On Interstate 90 Westbound, at milepost 137, the milepost 137 sign itself needs to be repaired. It is currently leaning against the guardrail. See the album photo from when it was still standing titled "Interstate 90 Westbound Milepost 137."

4.   On Interstate 90 Westbound, after milepost 135, your "State Law All Vehicles Keep Right Except to Pass" sign on the left side of the freeway needs to be repaired. It's just past the apple maggot quarantine sign before the guardrail ends. See the album photo titled "Interstate 90 Westbound State Law Sign After Milepost 135."

5.   In Thorp (I-90 Exit 101), just before the Westbound entrance for Interstate 90, the big green guide sign saying to turn right for I-90 West Seattle or go straight for I-90 East Ellensburg needs to be replaced. It looks like it's been needing replacement for a while. See the album photo from when it was still standing titled "Interstate 90 Westbound Entrance Guide Sign in Thorp."

6.   Also in Thorp (I-90 Exit 101), on the Eastbound entrance ramp for Interstate 90, the "Freeway Entrance" sign on the left needs to be replaced. See the album photo from when it was still standing titled "Interstate 90 Eastbound Freeway Entrance Sign at Exit 101."

7.   On Interstate 90 Eastbound, your Exit 63 sign at the gore point needs to be replaced. See the album photo from when it was still standing titled "Interstate 90 Eastbound Exit 63 Gore Point Sign."

8.   On Interstate 90 Eastbound, your Exit 101 sign at the gore point needs to be replaced. See the album photo from when it was still standing titled "Interstate 90 Eastbound Exit 101 Gore Point Sign."

9.   On Interstate 90 Eastbound, just before milepost 127, your control city sign has vandalism on it that needs to be cleaned off. See the album photo titled "Interstate 90 Eastbound Control City Sign Vandalism Before Milepost 127."

10.   On Interstate 90 Eastbound, at milepost 131, the milepost 131 sign itself has vandalism on it that needs to be cleaned off. See the album photo titled "Interstate 90 Eastbound Milepost 131 Vandalism."

11.   On Interstate 90 Eastbound, just past Exit 136, your "Severe Side Wind Ahead" sign on the left side of the freeway needs to be repaired. See the album photo titled "Interstate 90 Eastbound Severe Side Wind Sign After Exit 136."

12.   On Interstate 90 Eastbound, also just past Exit 136, your Interstate 90 shield, needs to be replaced on the signpost. See the album photo titled "Interstate 90 Eastbound Missing Interstate 90 Shield After Exit 136."

13.   On Interstate 82 Westbound, at Exit 11, on the Westbound entrance ramp, the "Freeway Entrance" sign on the left was burned by a brushfire and needs to be repaired. See the album photo titled "Interstate 82 Westbound Freeway Entrance Sign at Exit 11."

14.   On Interstate 82 Eastbound, at milepost 14, the milepost 14 sign itself needs to be replaced. See the album photo from when it was still standing titled "Interstate 82 Eastbound Milepost 14."

15.   On Interstate 82 Eastbound, just past Exit 26, your "merge ahead" sign needs to be replaced. See the album photo from when it was still standing titled "Interstate 82 Eastbound Merge Ahead Sign After Exit 26."

16.   On Interstate 82 Eastbound, also just past Exit 26 at milepost 27, the milepost 27 sign itself needs to be repaired. Only its broken post remains. It's at the end of the entrance ramp before the first light pole. See the album photo titled "Interstate 82 Eastbound Milepost 27 Sign After Exit 26."

17.   On US Route 97 Northbound, just past milepost 1, your "Welcome to Washington" sign needs to be repaired. It is lying down on the ground on the other side of the guardrail. See the album photo titled "US Route 97 Northbound Washington Sign After Milepost 1."

18.   On Washington State Route 243 Southbound, just before milepost 10, your gas, food, and lodging next right sign needs to be repaired. See the album photo titled "SR 243 Southbound Before Milepost 10."

I realize that given the time of year it is, it's obvious that only some of these will be able to be repaired before the full brunt of winter weather comes, and that is obviously perfectly understandable and okay! I just wanted to get one more report in this year so that you guys can log these in your system. Whatever doesn't get repaired in the short amount of time we have before winter weather can be repaired in the spring. =)

I hope you have a wonderful day and happy holidays! You guys are awesome!

Best regards,
Amaury

Sorry, I didn't turn on my sarcasm flag. When the thread topic changed so that "That Need Repairs" is so far from "Signs" it struck me as funny.

Back on track:  BGSs on Michigan freeways are usually in good condition, but that is not nearly so often the case on non-freeway trunklines (except at freeway interchanges when part of a freeway sign replacement project).  Lots of surface trunkline BGSs are either left in faded and weathered condition, or are removed with inadequate replacement signage in their place.

Here's an aggravating one that is the result of a repair.  The I-96 route shield disappeared.  A decision to eliminate the assembly is one thing, but for someone to install a speed limit sign and then consciously not remove the JCT tab is the height of idiocy.

And almost a month later, this exact sign has been crashed into again. I'm starting to think a guardrail should be installed on this exit to protect the signs, like in some other areas, since people clearly do not know how to negotiate this simple exit. These ones don't technically need repairs, as looking at all the available images from Google Maps for each area, it doesn't look like the signs were ever installed to begin with for some reason, but I will go ahead and mention them.

On Interstate 90 eastbound, there is no exit sign at the gore point for Exit 110, the exit for I-82 eastbound, despite there being one for the westbound side.

Eastbound: https://maps.app.goo.gl/d1NPxYXa5Fncd3mU9
Westbound: https://maps.app.goo.gl/6e7fhU4VoUrsrRKt6

Both sides do have the whatchacallit saying the exit is right there.

Eastbound: https://maps.app.goo.gl/qeGggAKWBGF9Eft3A
Westbound: https://maps.app.goo.gl/PtZSe4b1TgCTNksSA

On US Route 2 in both directions, at the Stevens Pass summit, which also serves as the line for Chelan and King Counties, there are no "Entering King County" and "Entering Chelan County" signs for westbound and eastbound, respectively.

Looking westbound: https://maps.app.goo.gl/WryM3QWBRFX7GPX27
Looking eastbound: https://maps.app.goo.gl/GARNArYS37kzhWQ89

On Washington State Route 20 in both directions:
There are no "Entering Chelan County" and "Entering Okanogan County" signs for westbound and eastbound, respectively.
There are no "Entering Skagit County" and "Entering Chelan County" signs for westbound and eastbound, respectively.
There are no "Entering Whatcom County" and "Entering Skagit County" signs for westbound and eastbound, respectively.

For that last one, WA 20 actually enters both Skagit and Whatcom Counties two times, once before or after milepost 117, depending on which direction you're heading, and once before or after milepost 146, depending on which direction you're heading. There are no county line signs for Whatcom/Skagit at the county border near milepost 146. The other county border does have signs.

Looking eastbound for Whatcom/Skagit near milepost 146: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Zmgg81H3yHV6upW26

On US Route 12 westbound, at the Vaugn Hubbard Bridge, there is no "Entering Franklin County" sign. They could just have a post with the county line sign and the already-existing Pasco sign here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/uFhwrPCgyGTjB3nz9

On Interstate 182, US Route 395, and Washington State Route 397, there are no "Entering Benton County" and "Entering Franklin County" signs for westbound and eastbound, respectively, and for southbound and northbound, respectively. I'm just going to share an overall map thing for this one showing the border: https://maps.app.goo.gl/N3XcQwwryUX72cg19

On Interstate 82 in both directions, there are no milepost 24 posts installed. Mile 24 is on the Fred G. Redmon Memorial Bridge.

As I understand it, unless absolutely necessary, DOTs don't like installing signs on bridges. That's why what I've seen WSDOT do with signs like county line signs, for example, is they'll either install the signs both on one side of a bridge, such as at the border for Whitman and Garfield Counties on WA 127, or they'll install the signs before the bridge for each respective side. The second one is more common. For example, on US Route 97 northbound, the "Entering Chelan County" sign is before crossing the Beebe Bridge, respectively. Likewise, for the "Entering Douglas County" sign, it is before crossing the Beebe Bridge on US Route 97 southbound. The county border for these counties, and many other counties, is technically in the middle of the bridge. In the case for mile 24, they could install mile marker 24s to the already-existing sign posts being used for the Fred G. Redmon Bridge signs before the bridge in both directions.

On Washington State Route 261 in both directions, at the Lyons Ferry Bridge, there are no county lines installed for Franklin and Columbia Counties. Northbound and southbound, respectively: https://maps.app.goo.gl/b7vHpmA1XhMDXioC8

Saw this gem NB on I-39/US 51 near 39's southern terminus just north of Normal

Something is missing on the (viewing) left side of the sign. I'm assuming some type of sheeting came loose and fell off, or some graffiti was covered up with green-out is also possible

The streetview is 6 months old, so it has been that way awhile

Saw it taking US 51 up to Northern IL for some holiday travel

Actually, it looks like the sign is just a full-face greenout (that partially fell away) over what used to be a button copy sign—look closely and you can see the shadowing from where "Bl" used to be on the layer below!

People seriously need to learn how to drive and navigate exits with sharp curves, such as this one or I-90 eastbound Exit 109, where I said earlier here that I think they should install a guardrail there. Maybe the same should be done for this exit.

Both of these are repaired. Unfortunately, two other signs now need repairs. I'll get photos soon, but...

On Washington State Route 821 between mileposts 4 and 5, there's a single post that has both county line signs for Yakima and Kittitas Counties, alongside cautionary open range signs, The Kittitas County sign fell of the post. Here it is earlier in the summer: https://maps.app.goo.gl/JEqZCEQEjCMER76r7 Hoping it just fell on the ground and not into the river. Not quite sure how recently this happened, but before today, I last drove through there the night of November 30, and it was still there then, so it was sometime after that.

On Interstate 82 eastbound, someone crashed into the exit gore point sign for Exit 33B. Here it is earlier in the summer: https://maps.app.goo.gl/gqj3Bt5X7QuHMvmYA

This one looks to have just happened today, as there was a sheriff leaving when I passed by this morning. And the roads weren't even bad. People just need to learn how to drive.

FYI, guiderail usage should be minimized for a few reasons:
1) a guiderail is a hazard itself and will damage a vehicle that strikes it
2) cost of installation and maintenance

Guiderails are typically used to block a hazard that would be worse to hit than the guiderail itself. Based on the photos, it looks like the area beyond the ramp is flat and clear, in which case it's safer to let the errant vehicle go off road and slow down (this area is called a "clear zone", meaning it's clear of hazards). It's also important to consider the expected angle of impact on a guiderail. For a loop ramp like this, its more likely the vehicle would hit the guiderail at a higher angle (more direct), which makes for a harsher impact. I would also say replacing that sign is much cheaper than repairing a guiderail.

(hopefully this doesn't come across as condescending, just thought it would be an interesting discussion)

Normally, when it comes to that, people only steal the actual mileposts 69 because "har har, funny," hence why WSDOT has no mileposts for that number, has a blank milepost, or sometimes has milepost 68.9, such as on WA 26. This is the first I've heard of a person or people stealing completely unrelated mileposts that, when combined, make that number. Regardless, these people are just immature idiots.
Title: Re: Signs on State-Maintained Roads in Your State That Need Repairs

I didn't get a photo because I saw it heading westbound, but on Interstate 82 eastbound at Exit 69, the Exit 69 sign itself at the gore point is missing, though both of the posts are still standing. Here's when it was still there: https://maps.app.goo.gl/cNgrSKwePczxXaLA8 I suspect it could be related to the above. It's possible whoever the culprit is was stopped and arrested at this point and was prevented from doing further damage. The blank mileposts in both directions for milepost 69 also appeared to be missing, but I may have just missed them. I don't know why anyone would want to steal those since they're blank. Next time I go through there eastbound I'll get a photo of the posts and have a closer look.

You know, considering what they do for mileposts to deter vandals, I'm surprised that for this exit they didn't just have an unnumbered exit. Or just make it Exit 68 or Exit 70.

Title: Re: Signs on State-Maintained Roads in Your State That Need Repairs
Post by: freebrickproductions on February 28, 2024, 04:07:05 PM
To be fair, I'd imagine a gore point sign or any kind of exit sign would be a lot harder to steal than a milepost.
Title: Re: Signs on State-Maintained Roads in Your State That Need Repairs
Post by: Amaury on February 29, 2024, 12:52:27 AM
I suppose it depends. This one is on wooden posts which can be easily sawed off, IMO.
Title: Re: Signs on State-Maintained Roads in Your State That Need Repairs
Post by: Scott5114 on February 29, 2024, 05:46:08 AM
So you saw it off from the post...then what? A two-digit gore point sign is normally something like six feet by five feet. You'd need a particularly large pickup truck bed to fit that. And it's going to be heavy enough you probably need at least two people to move the thing. And you need to get it in there without someone calling your tag number in to the cops.
Title: Re: Signs on State-Maintained Roads in Your State That Need Repairs

Yeah, that's why I said I'm not 100% sure on the Exit 69 eastbound gore point sign. (The aforementioned mileposts, I'm confident.) I will go back to that exit and look sometime soon. I only saw it from the westbound side and just noticed two posts standing, but no sign. It's possible it's either on the ground and I just didn't see it (since it's on the eastbound side, and I was "far away" on the westbound side) or it's already been picked up by DOT for repairs at a future date.

No evidence of a crash, given the bottom half of the signposts are still standing, so it seems to me that, for whatever reason, the bolts in the middle area at one of the breakaway points failed or something.

Both of these are fixed.

This sign is requiring repairs again, except this time it's the whole post. It fell off of its pedestal:

Quote from: Amaury on March 20, 2024, 05:40:57 AMNo evidence of a crash, given the bottom half of the signposts are still standing, so it seems to me that, for whatever reason, the bolts in the middle area at one of the breakaway points failed or something.

Interstate 90 eastbound in Adams County at Exit 231:

It was already fallen over on the ground the last time, before yesterday, that I drove through the area on February 19. Last time it was still intact that I personally saw was when I drove through the area on December 5, so it happened sometime between those two dates.

Google Maps' latest capture from August 2023 before it fell over: https://maps.app.goo.gl/GBiRyNq1HNfWSm97A

Now repaired.
