111F in Fresno today, 75F in Monterey.  Anyone want to take a guess which one I'll be spending time in today?

Western Washington had an apocalyptic day. Hottest in 11 years, with temperatures in the high 90s and even low 100s for some inland areas. Then a thunderstorm at sunset.

Spent the whole day out there and didn't come back until after sundown (which is rare for me).  We didn't even particularly do anything other than just walk the multiuse Monterey Bay Trail and grabbed lunch.  Apparently it was 109F yesterday and will be 111F today.

Word is the preliminary high in Death Valley neat Furnace Creek was 130F yesterday.

If confirmed, that would certainly be a United States record for August, and the highest reading ever reported from Death Valley outside of a July 1913 heatwave. However, some recent research suggests the 1913 records are probably inaccurate, and the same goes for a few other global extremes...so there is a decent chance that the 130F reading on the 16th represents a world record high temperature.

Really I can't see the old 20th Century data being anywhere near as accurate as today's.  Apparently today was 126F from what I've been monitoring.

Actually that data isn't too bad generally, but the 1913 data is probably wrong because the temperatures from that summer were meteorologically impossible based on other surrounding observations and upper-air data that we do have.

Here's a fascinating blog post about it: https://www.wunderground.com/blog/weatherhistorian/an-investigation-of-death-valleys-134f-world-temperature-record.html

Apparently we have an air quality index of 183 from all the fires in Central California.
