PA Shield in MI

Okay, this one took me by surprise, and I couldn't even get a photo.

On I-196 northbound near MM 19.6 there is an I-196 shield right above a PA-31 shield where a US-31 shield should be. A few miles later, after I assumed there wasn't going to be any more, there was another. But the next signage was the correct US-31 shield.

You can't get the pictures in the construction zone. Anyone from western Michigan have an explanation on the how/why it happened. Is it temporary from the construction (it seemed like a permanent signpost).

Anyways, one of the oddest 'wrong signs' I've ever seen.

This was a topic of discussion at the Grand Rapids road meet. At least one of the attendees indicated they might be able to go down and get a photo, but as of yet I haven't heard anything about a successful mission to do so.

Perhaps the MDOT ran out of US signs so maybe they are "borrowing" the PA shaped sign

Mr. Matté

I recall one time traveling on State Street in Perth Amboy, NJ (Middlesex CR 611) and north of the NJ 440 interchange, I saw North and South PA 611 signs.  I didn't know I was going to Philly and/or Easton...

I just passed PA 31's eastern terminus tonight but didn't see "HOLLAND MI" on the destination sign.

Hmm. This is bizarre... add this to the list of these instances...

  • An AL shield turning up in MA
  • An OH 400 shield turning up in KS
  • A CT 51 shield turning up in OK

If it weren't for the fact I saw it twice, I'd almost venture to guess a prankster stole a sign in one state to put it up in another to confuse/amuse people.

How about a West Virginia shield in Missouri?....Found one last weekend just south of I-70 on U.S. 40/61.  Actually, the contractor places a MO Secondary Shield (that is always "Lettered" routes) with a 40 in it.  Also, at the corner are to MO St Rt 40 shields instead of a U.S. shield

I almost forgot, about one pic I have waiting to go on my IL error page.  Just out side the BNSF rail yard south of Joliet, IL...one road will take your to "U.S. 53".  When strangely, IL 53 is at the other end... :-D

There's also a couple of WV-style shields around Lebanon, MO, instead of the usual letter route shield with a thicker black outline:

I've always liked US Route V that shows up in Missouri.

Just a quick question, but any chance we could get this uploaded to Wikipedia. I'd like to nominate it as the Selected Photo at the US Roads Portal for April Fool's Day.

get your own photo of it.  It's not like I-196 is private property with dogs guarding the entrance - there is nothing preventing you from going down there and taking care of business in a self-sufficient manner.

I do not like Wikipedia's apparent policy of begging for photos, especially when some Wiki staffers claim that they "need" them.  You need air, water, food, and maybe a roof over your head.  Anything past that, you simply want it.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I was asking for permission to include this photo because it is of higher quality than I can photograph in Michigan in March. I was hoping to share this photo with the rest of the world as a humorous photo on April Fool's Day. I don't know who the original photographer of the photo is, so my best option is to ask here.

Now, would the original photographer please feel free to contact me?

Alex

flaroadgeek and I took both of those I-196/PA 31 photos. We have been rubbed wrong by wikipedia in the past, and at this time do not wish to share the photo for wikipedia commons.

Thanks for the polite reply. It looks like another photo will likely be used as the April Fool's Selected Photo. Feel free to check the portal in a month to see the project's humorous take on roads in the US. (The content of the portal will revert to more normal fare on the 2nd.)

Is the banner Clearview? I really don't like the series B on the 196.
