A cold front is finally sweeping through the Ozarks soon. The week ahead will be quite rainy, though temperatures will be 5-10 degrees cooler than last week. Greene County is currently in a D1 grade drought.

High 80s and sweltering. I did some delivery runs over the weekend but it was still over 70 at midnight. By the time I got home, my room had barely cooled to 80.

And today is supposed to be the peak.

We've been having a monsoon surge for the past few days, which has been responsible for a lot of flash floods in southern Utah and a few severe thunderstorms in northern Utah (as is common with these types of events). The SLC airport even picked up a quarter inch of rain Monday night - always welcome in the middle of summer.

It's still a bit muggy (by our western standards) today in Salt Lake, but we won't have another shot at any storms until at least the middle of next week. For the next several days, we're going to have a heat wave that will probably give us the warmest temperatures of the year. Starting tomorrow and for the next four days, highs will be in the low 100s and lows in the low-mid 70s. I would not be surprised if the NWS issues a heat advisory for the northern Utah valleys this afternoon.

I can't complain too much, because it could be way worse - St George will come close to or break 110F every day for the rest of this week. Unsurprisingly, there is an excessive heat warning in effect there.

This next week is going to about ten degrees cooler than last week. It is supposed to rain at some point everyday of the week this week, and that is looking to be true so far, but it has been mostly sunny today. Yesterday, I took a drive down to a restaurant in the middle of nowhere and it was the worst rain I have driven in as of yet.

Like much of the inland west, Salt Lake City has been having a brutal heat wave for the past few days. The SLC airport hit 105F today and yesterday, both of which were new daily record highs. More interestingly, they were only the 19th and 20th times a temperature that high has ever been recorded, and the 5th time ever that we had two consecutive 105+ days. We weren’t  far off from the all-time record of 107. In fact, nearby Ogden did tie their all-time record high of 104 today.

Heat advisories are currently in effect for all western and central Utah valleys, including the Wasatch Front, while the southern tier of the state remains in an excessive heat warning. Tomorrow will still be very hot, although probably not quite to today’s levels. After that we get a real “cooldown” with highs in the upper 90s.

A tropical storm...in MA?

Here in MO we sometimes see strong "hurricane remnant" storms.

Heck, Hurricane Hanna even caused issues for our friends living in the Chihuahuan Desert of north-central Mexico.  While they didn't have any real flooding, the excess rain was enough to cause intermittent power and water outages in town.  And the highway through the Sierra Madre between Saltillo and Monterrey–closer to the coast but still more than 200 miles inland–was completely closed due to landslides.

Certainly not unheard of. There are markers all over the state marking 1938 hurricane flood levels. Bob in 91 made a mess, as did Unnamed Hurricane #8 in which we lost George Clooney. Floyd and Irene soaked parts of the state in 99 and 2011.

Here there is steady but not terrible wind, overcast. Tornado watch, which is rendered more interesting by the fact that there of been a lot of sharks around lately.

High 70s to mid 80s generally, with a lot of sun. I'm ready for summer to start winding down.

Rothman

This morning at 8 am, TWC predicted that we'd just get thunderstorms and moderate wind.  By 10 am, they said we would be getting a direct hit with winds up to 37 mph sustained with gusts up above 50.

Businesses and organizations shut down.

Their earlier prediction proved to be true.

But it just started. After what felt like nine months of very wintry weather.

I understand we have differing opinions of what is comfortable, but I really wish the Seattle heat-haters would cool it during the summer. It's not that long, and it's a very enjoyable time of year to get out and do stuff. I don't want to Kayak on Lake Union when it's 55 and drizzly. It could be 95 and humid. We have it good here.
