AASHTO Meeting in Denver

I know several people on the Forum look forward to those times when AASHTO posts its route numbering decisions.  The Agenda indicates that the Special Committee on Route Numbering is scheduled to meet today from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm Mountain Time:

I hope they will post the results relatively quickly this time around. The Board does not meet until Monday, October 21 from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm Mountain; their decision would make the route decisions "official".  With a little bit of luck, maybe a posting by Thursday or Friday of next week.

It's also interesting to look at other topics discussed at the meeting.

AASHTO has posted the SCOH meeting results. Lots to love if you're fans of I-49, I-69 or St. Louis interstates.

So US 1 is now bypassing much of its downtown Miami segment in favor of continuing up I-95 and then east on what is currently FL 970 (with US 41's southern terminus now being northbound Brickell at 4th Street).

What is the exact routing for the US 40 realignment in Lawrence, KS?

---

Changes:

- Past actions approved: 785 from I-40 to US 70 (NC), I-86 (eastern) from SR 532 to NY/PA line, I-69E along the spur from I-37, I-370 officially applied to the length of freeway up to where MD 200 begins

- I-49 officially established in Arkansas

- I-69 extension established in Indiana, I-164 to be supplanted by I-69

- I-44 extended north up old I-70, I-70 on new Mississippi River crossing

- new Business US 64 in Vilonia, AR

- US 67 on freeway alignment in Walnut Ridge, AR

- the aforementioned US 1 shift in Miami

- US 40 realigned in Lawrence, KS starting at its junction with the South Lawrence Trafficway/K-10

- elimination of Business US 40 in Russell, KS

- US 62 relocation to a bypass in Cynthiana, KY

- withdrawn applications for relocated US 85 alignments in two North Dakota communities (Alexander, Watford City)

I guess we'll have to bug them about posting the complete applications again.

US 1 is being moved onto I-95 south of downtown Miami. The last bit north of US 41 will become an extension of (or remain per some sources) US 41, while the rest is presumably being dropped from the state highway system, necessitating the realignment.

USBR 50 (Maryland) is an existing path along the old C&O Canal to Cumberland and the Great Allegheny Passage rail trail to the state line. Except for a small gap at McKeesport, the GAP/future USBR 50 continues all the way to Pittsburgh.

My summaries were more useful when each application had a separate link. Here's the text (tiny to not flood the thread):

Say goodbye to I-164 in Indiana. It and I-181 can have a reunion of former interstates that were taken over by another number somewhere in Kentucky, halfway between SW Indiana and NE Tennessee.

This Kentucky designation boggles my mind. The logical routing for this new bypass is US 27, not US 62. Somebody in Frankfort must be smoking crack.

Don't forget Future I-130, a route so forgotten that AR forgot to take it off the books! Then again, they didn't remove the I-49/I-40 concurrent sections of I-540 either.

I thought that I-581 was meant to bite the dust and become I-73. But that hasn't happened.

Dang - only the interstate adjustments required for the Great Lemon Bridge in St. Louis; you got my hopes up that MoDOT went for an interstate number for MO 364 or tried again for MO 370; or IDOT decided to seek a number for IL 255.

Illinois didn't seek an intestate number for the O'Hare West Bypass at this meeting; I had been previously informed they would.

Oh well, no North Dakota applications.

Arkansas:
I-49 approved
US 64 realigned around Vilonia and US 64 Biz created (open October 2011)
US 67 realigned south of Hoxie (open November 2015) - also includes part already relocated October 2009 south of Highway 226

Florida:
US 1 transferred to the city between I-95 and US 41 (effective September 5, 2013), US 1 realigned onto I-95 and SR 970, US 41 remains on US 1 to SR 970 (not currently signed there)

Illinois-Missouri:
I-70 moved onto new bridge (open January 1, 2014!), I-44 extended to meet it

Indiana:
I-69 replaces I-164, except for the southernmost .69 mi west of US 41 (holy crap, new shortest Interstate?)

Kansas:
US 40 rerouted onto K-10 and US 59 through Lawrence (effective April 5, 2014)
US 40 Biz Russell eliminated (effective September 5, 2013)

Kentucky:
US 62 moved to Cynthiana bypass (open October 2013) - page 3 of this PDF takes forever to load

Quote from: NE2 on October 25, 2013, 08:32:18 AMBrickell Avenue has become a high-density residential street, not suitable for large amounts of out-of-town traffic.
From English si's PDF:

The road is now bordered by predominantly by intense, up-scale, high rise condominiums with numerous residents.  The City of Miami and the local residents have a strong desire to make Brickell Ave. more pedestrian friendly and a center of pedestrain activity.

Personal translation: the area has become Yuppie-town; my apologies to the group Lipps Inc.

Seriously, those that developed this corridor into what it is today knew darn well that this road was designated as a US highway & a cross-country one at that beforehand; and would still be used as a local and reliever road should I-95 in that area be shut down for an accident/emergency and/or reconstruction.

I'd be curious to know when those condos first opened; how were they advertised to potential owners/tenants?  Did the ads. contain the words/phrase ... right along US 1?  If so, talk about hypocrisy or a complete 180.

I noticed on the map graphic (in the fore-mentioned PDF) that Brickell is also marked (at least on the map) as FL 5 (secret designation(?)); will that secret designation remain/become non-secret or be removed as well that stretch as well by FDoT?

This re-route also means that the southernmost part (& its terminus) of I-95 will be multiplexed w/US 1.  One could theoretically truncate I-95 at FL 970/Relocated US 1 and have the remaining 2 miles of expressway be just US 1 (at least by signage); Federal funding, mile marker, and exit number issues aside.

...where it was mentioned that FDoT still considers the US 41 designation to extend to Miami Beach (even though signage begins/ends at Brickell).
But if that's true, then nothing would be changing as far as US 41 is concerned, correct?  And FDoT wouldn't have needed to submit a request to AASHTO?

- I-44 extended north up old I-70, I-70 on new Mississippi River crossing

This will give I-44 the distinction of starting in the wrong direction (heading west to go east) and ending in the wrong direction as that section will take I-44 East toward the west.
