What is (or was) a dim out zone?

If that photo is from WWII, it could be an area near the coast where you're supposed to dim your headlights for security reasons.  (i.e. So that you wouldn't be seen by a Japanese sub or airplane.)

Probably.  Fort Stephens just north of this location was actually shelled by a Japanese sub during WWII.  This photo is from just south of Seaside OR and you can stay inland by taking OR 2 (now US 26) and OR 53 (together these make up the old alignment of US 101 between Seaside and Nehalem).

Not sure of the age on this one, but it's no longer there.

I used to have a site bookmarked with all sorts of old Ohio signs, but can't find it.

Wish I knew of that one two weeks ago!

Someone earlier in this thread asked about I-85 shields with "Virginia" on them...

There was still at least 1 up in 2007 in Petersburg.  I do not remember exactly which intersection this was...

nice find!  can we yank the 85/95 for the shield gallery?  the only VA I-85 shield photo we have was taken in 1986.

Don't know if they are still there, but there are some old black and white photos hanging up in Concord Mall in Delaware that show the rural U.S. 202. One of the photos has a Delaware US 202 cutout in it.

I love the signals in that 1st Florida pic!

Here's something I found in Miles City, MT a few years back:
