Admittedly, I've never traveled to Huntsville. However, while taking a GSV tour of the Rocket City, I noticed a lot of greenout with East and West designations on I-565 pull-thru signs. Does anybody here know the backstory?

Yes, the route was signed north-south for its first two months.

I have the newspaper article source for the change referenced at https://www.aaroads.com/guide.php?page=i0565al

Wowza. For some reason I'm surprise that so many of the original signs are still in place after nearly 25 years. Looks like so many of them have been (poorly) modified over the decades.

Thanks for the info.

Some of the signs have been replaced with Clearview, but for some reason it has been peace-meal replacements. I don't understand why ALDOT didn't just replace all of them.

Not only was I-565 signed as North/South originally, but AL 20 was signed along with it. You can still find some BGSs with spaces where an AL 20 shield was.

Also, at exit 17, AL 53 was erroneously signed as going down Jordan Lane south of the exit and AL 20 was signed as going down Governors Drive. Some of the AL 20 shields at this exit were replaced with AL 53 shields. However, this left a sign with a large amount of unused green space above the "Jordan Lane" designation:

It's all fun & games until someone summons Cthulhu and brings about the end of the world.

I also collect traffic lights, road signs, fans, and railroad crossing equipment.
