I see that sign also has an outer green border. Generally, signs that are bordered in white don't need a second one, as white is visible at night.

Yup, but that is the Arizona DOT standard for conventional-road D-series signing.  It is generally freeway guide signs (including crossroads signs mounted over or beside roads interchanging with a freeway) which get white borders running out to the outside edge of the sign panel.

Yup, gone as of at least August of 2010.

I-71 SB rest area in Delaware County, Ohio. I like the font on the lower sign.  The consistent stroke width lets it go well with the standard font, not to mention a sign border.  Also, that horizontal line does a good job of separating the two sentences, unlike the newer, run-on sign above it.
Wait, it's all Ohio? Always has been.

Quillz

Do you happen to know what font that is? I feel I've seen it before but can't remember what it's called.

The only thing that springs to mind is that I had some school lockers back in the 1980s that used that typeface for the numbers.

Ditto that.

Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

I've always been a fan of the older-style Massachusetts BGS.

This one's on the ramp from the Mass Pike to MA 128/I-95:

And this one was a bit further north:

I love the old signs (like the MA128 examples) where the lettering looks positively 3D!
"Officer, I'm always careful to drive the speed limit no matter where I am and that's what I was doin'." Said "No, you weren't," she said, "Yes, I was." He said, "Madam, I just clocked you at 22 MPH," and she said "That's the speed limit," he said "No ma'am, that's the route numbah!"  - Gary Crocker

My first thought was fireworks. Then I noticed that they were snowflakes.
It's a cryptic sign, certainly.

This from the same province which has signs denoting pictorially that trucks must take a shower.
If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

I guess it's Quebec's way of saying:

Actually the two come from different sources.  The ones that are all button copy except the shields are MassPike signs; their last sign replacement (90s) on the Boston extension and intersecting roads at interchanges was button copy except for shields, which is exactly the opposite of what MassHighway (formerly DPW, later MassDOT) did at the same time, with button copy ONLY inside I-shields as seen in the second pic.  There are still a lot of specimens of the button copy shields out there in Mass but they are starting to disappear as they have gotten aggressive replacing signs in some places that really didn't need it yet (like 128/95 in Burlington/Winchester/Woburn, whose signs were 90s installs and were still in fine shape) relative to some that do need it that still haven't been replaced elsewhere.

OK, so it's not in the U.S., but I just got a kick out of this one.....
You just don't see too many place names beginning with the letters Kg around here, do ya?
