Highest & Lowest AADT by State and Route Type

This is a fascinating table, thank you for pulling it together!

Looking at New Hampshire:

I-93 MM 20: In Manchester, the state's largest city, on the brief concurrency with NH 101, the main E-W highway across the southern part of the state
I-93 MM 118: Approaching the Vermont border north of the White Mountains, after splitting with US 3 but before picking up US 302

US 3 MM 43: Downtown Concord, literally in front of the State House. Though where US 3 follows the F. E. Everett Turnpike is much busier, at 124,820 between Exits 5 and 6 in Nashua as of 2015: PDF (search "FEET"). The US 4 portion of the Spaulding Turnpike is also busier than this at 67,673 in Newington as of 2015: PDF
US 3 MM 242: Canadian border crossing

NH 101: Just east of I-93 leaving Manchester, though there's actually a higher AADT of 58,000 between I-93 and Exit 1, rather than your 53,000 between Exits 1 and 2.
NC 16B: Loop off NH 16A in Jackson, serving a ski area and a lot of vacation homes

I assume you're not counting state highways without a posted route number? Because the portion of the Everett Turnpike that does not have a route number has an AADT of 91,000 between Exits 7 and 8 in Nashua, and it is a state highway that is clinchable in TM.




For Maine, I was surprised to see 295 higher than 95, but upon taking a look it seems the MaineDOT data does not include the Turnpike. It appears the Turnpike Authority does not publish detailed traffic data, at least that I can find, but I did find a consultant report from 2016 [PDF] that includes 2015 AADTs, and shows the highest as 74,006 between Exits 36 and 42 as of 2015.

Also note that MaineDOT splits volumes directionally on freeways. On I-95, if you add up the SB and NB 2019 volumes at the NH State Line you get 37,990+38,770=76,760 (down from 86,910 in 2017). Returning to I-295 in South Portland, north of Exit 3 you get 42,580+41,250=83,830. This would appear to be the most recent winner for Maine!

All adjusted.  Thanks for the good info.  I was unaware that the Everett Turnpike was considered a state route, so didn't bother opening that .pdf.

I knew there were going to be some state intricacies that I wouldn't know, so again, thanks for the info.  I was surprised to have a number that low for the highest interstate, so that all makes a lot more sense.  That has been adjusted as well.

PA's makes sense but with a question:

I-76 MP 342 is in Center City Philly between US 1 and I-676
I-86 is up in Erie County.

US 322/US 422 - is that a tie?
US 19 MP 28 puts that in SW PA, Greene County...that makes sense

PA 581 is in the Harrisburg area...I thought that maybe PA 309 or possibly PA 65 or PA 28 in Pittsburgh's North Shore might have been close.
And I'm sure there were several rural PA routes that were pretty low.

I did see that as well.  It's not like an AADT of 43 for TX349 is a traffic jam waiting to happen either.  It's possible that would be lower than the cemetery.

Interesting that the US route in Illinois with the lowest ADT is the only part of US34 in the state that I haven't clinched.  MM119 puts you just northeast of the town of Dover, between Princeton and LaMoille.

And if you read upthread, I originally didn't see that portion as I just assumed all of the lowest numbers had to be in western Illinois.

By pure coincidence that is on the route of my next clinching trip, which is hopefully Saturday.
Indiana: counties 100%, highways 100%
Illinois: counties 100%, highways 61%
Michigan: counties 100%, highways 56%
Wisconsin: counties 86%, highways 23%

I have clinched all of 34. Its very empty there. But it loses any through traffic left at 80 though most is lost at 74. It's about 12 miles shortcut over 74 and 80 or 110 but same amount of time. Though there is a secret bypass in Kewanee.
Also you can see traffic declines in 34 and 29 as you  approach 80 . Meaning little through traffic.
North of 6 it used to be 32 and merged with 6 to Omaha.
Also east of 39 there are some really empty stretches . It's really a dramatic change the Chicago 60 miles sign is meat Illinois 23 and it looks like middle of nowhere . A few miles down the road outside Sandwich it makes a dramatic switch tons suburban landscape and jumps to over 10000 .

For the PA routes, it's definitely PA 581 as you mentioned.  PA 28 is close but not quite.

But for US 322...I couldn't find the segment you found...MP 342 is in the eastern part of the state, and I can't find any standalone sections that high.  You might have the section concurrent with I-95?  I think US 422 is the standalone winner.

Great work! There seems to be an inconsistency between NY and NJ- NY's highest amount is 285,440 at I-95 mile 0, which is presumably the GWB, and thus should be the highest number for NJ. Yet NJ's highest listed amount is 194,158 on I-78 mile 52, the intersection with the GSP.

I'm also shocked that the lowest NY highway isn't NY 421, which apparently has an AADT of a mighty 124.

It probably is.  Traffic on NY 421 is measured just west of NY 30 and traffic likely drops a lot past Warren Point Road.  NY 344 was counted just west of the MA line - east of the parking lot for Taconic State Park.  I also wouldn't be surprised if these roads are highly seasonal (especially NY 421), and NY 421 was counted in August, and NY 344 in May.

It's when 220 and 322 are concurrent (I changed my OP to say 220/322) in West Chester just north of PA3.

Very likely data from different years.  I'll change the NJ entry to match the NY.

Virginia has a lot of approaches to jails, community colleges, and other state institutions that get a primary shield number. I'm surprised one of those didn't make it as the most desolate.
The rest makes sense though.

I found it.  I travel the 202/322 section and the 422 section a lot and it doesn't seem like those sections have the same volume.  But that's what the counts say...so a tie it is.  Thanks!
