I'm looking for feedback on my site's exit lists.  I'm leaning more and more towards re-computing the milemarkers for the exit lists on my site, especially if I do the "soft refresh" that I've been thinking of.  The thing is, signed milemarkers don't seem to match NYSDOT data records for what the mileage should be (I-81 and NY 17 are particularly noteworthy offenders).  Just computing from the Traffic Data Report would be the easy option, but I'm wondering if I should just use street view and measure from the nearest mile marker for everything with signed mileposts.

Interestingly, while my measured NY mileage fairly consistently lags by .5 miles on the longest routes, for I-89 and I-91 in VT, it's instead .2 miles over, which makes me wonder if there's some state methodology resulting in these differences.

I've started with the "soft refresh" idea.  I might have even managed to get the exit lists to work right on mobile, though I've thought that before and been wrong.  Here's what the new Thruway exit list looks like: https://nysroads.com/new/list-nyst.php

The exit lists use street view of mile markers, because I computed the Thruway's mileage from DOT data and got a figure over 500 miles long.

I can't comment on the accuracy of the milepoints, since I've never cross-checked any of them with any level of precision, but I do think your exit lists are great and I use them quite a bit, especially for non-interstate freeways, many of which don't even have mile markers posted at all or if they do, they're not "actual" mile markers. I'd even go so far as to say your exit lists are the only publicly available source for "actual" mile marker references on many non-interstate freeways, so they're an invaluable resource and I appreciate you having them and keeping them updated to the extent you do.

They're actually modeled after Upstate NY Roads (the site that brought me into the roadgeek community).

The Traffic Data Report has mileage figures, but those are actually closer to my Google Maps measurements than to the posted mile markers in some cases, which is interesting.  And, of course, those figures reset at county lines.  It's going to be interesting to figure out how to get the "actual" figures for longer distance roads like NY 104 and NY 5, since measurement errors on Google Maps stack with increasing distance, and my computer doesn't like doing such long measurements any more either (and it doesn't help that Google Maps uses a lot more RAM than it used to).

This month, I updated the I-86/NY 17, I-87, I-90, I-95, I-278, I-287, NY 5S, NY 8, and Thruway exit lists and began to consolidate the photos of routes with overlaps.  As such, photos on overlaps will only appear on the primary route.  This will usually be the lowest route number of the highest classification of roadway, but not always (for instance, the NY 8/NY 12 overlap north of Utica is on NY 12's page since that's the continuous freeway, and the NY 5/8/12 Arterial is now on a combined I-790/NY 5/NY 8/NY 12 page; this will also be reflected on the exit lists for the revamped site).  That effort won't be a priority until I finish the revamped site (in fact, many of the exit list updates are back-ported changes from the revamped versions, which are why there are so many), but I will be handling pages as they become affected by added photos.

I also added photos from a MLK Day trip to re-clinch NY 12E and refresh the Utica/Rome photo coverage to the following photo pages: NY 49, NY 365, NY 840, NY 8, I-790/NY 5/NY 8/NY 12, NY 5, NY 12, NY 12E, and NY 5S.

This week, I launched the new version of the website, including improved styling, revamped exit lists, and updated code; noteworthy additions include the NY 365 exit list, historical Inner Loop exit list, new images on the Inner Loop and Niagara Scenic Parkway articles, and an update to the links page.  Please note that most URLs have changed outside of the photo gallery, so if you have bookmarks and links to pages other than the index or photo gallery, they will need to be updated.  You may also need to do a hard refresh in order for the updated stylesheet to be loaded (you'll know you need to do this if the translucent gray background is missing).

Meanwhile, I'm now wondering if I should update the photo gallery to use NYSDOT regions rather than economic development regions.  It would be a bit of a project to change (especially the splitting of the Southern Tier), and both have pros and cons.

Pros for the status quo (aside from being less work):
-Matches the text on the Cuomo Signs and welcome centers
-More logical boundaries around the Adirondacks and Hudson Valley

Pros for the NYSDOT regions:
-It's a roads site and this would make it match the DOT
-The boundary reference would no longer be an external link
-More logical boundaries around the Southern Tier

This week, I finished consolidating photos on route overlaps, changed the photo direction labels for beltways and the Inner Loop, renamed the business loop photo pages to be consistent with Business Loop 81, updated the NY 481 exit list, and updated the I-86 Conversion and NYSDOT Regions pages.  I also added photos as follows:
-New York: I-90/Berkshire Spur, I-90/Albany, US 9, Columbia CR 25A, I-87/Thruway, and I-84
-Pennsylvania: I-84, US 209, US 206, and PA 611
-New Jersey: US 206, US 46, and NJ 94

This month's update is centered on I-81, featuring the debut of the I-81 Syracuse History article and Business Loop 81 exit list as well as updating the I-81 and I-481/NY 481 exit lists to reflect how everything will be realigned by the end of the year and add their historical exit lists.  This update also included updates for the I-78, I-478, I-878/NY 878, and I-86/NY 17 exit lists.

It might be a bit early for the changes related to I-81, especially as exit number changes have yet to begin around Watertown, but the time seemed right as the numbers are changing around Binghamton, and even a couple numbers around Syracuse got updated at some point.  I wanted the information on how things will be to be on the site, and with the historical lists, that can be done without losing information about how things were/still are as things are in progress.  The real-world conditions are a bit in-between, but that tends to be the case with construction.  I also didn't want to do the Binghamton changes just to have to adjust again later, or figure out how to mark exits that have had multiple former exit numbers, especially as such would ultimately have been temporary.  The I-690/NY 690, I-90, and Thruway exit lists, as well as the photo pages, will switch over at a later date.

Also, there are currently issues related to image loading on the site, so you may have to reload many pages multiple times to get everything to display correctly.  The web host says that they're currently working on the server and that things should go back to normal once they're done.
