I was thinking that US-7 is a road that does not go through anything major. what is the largest city on US-7? Danbury at population 83000 appears to be it.
is there any active US highway that does not go through a larger city?
(historically, US-7 did not count, as it terminated in NYC. US-630 would probably be my guess for all-time.)
US 641. I'd have to think that Murray, Ky. is the largest town it passes through, and that's primarily because of Murray State University.
US 8. Rhinelander? Forest Lake?
What about 302?

Murray is 17K. But historically US 641 entered Evansville (now 117K).

Forest Lake 18K.

Barre 9K.
Other small ones:
US 48 Moorefield 2K (if you count bypassed cities, Elkins 7K when it's done, otherwise Buckhannon 5K)
US 197 The Dalles 13K
US 550: Montrose 19K
US 491: Gallup 21K
I'd bet on US 48. Even the cities beyond the ends (not technically served because I-79 and I-81 bypass them) are small (Weston 4K, Strasburg 6K).
In Mississippi, Corinth (14,573) is the largest locale on U.S. 72. Laurel (18,548) is the largest in the state along U.S. 84.

US 72 serves Memphis and Chattanooga, and US 84 serves Wacko among others.
The largest city on US 159 is Falls City, Nebraska, at a population of 4,325.
US 199 in California has no incorporated cities. The answer for that route is None Of The Above...LOL! If the old 101/199 multiplexed route was still in place then Crescent City, which is the only incorporated city in Del Norte county, would be both the largest and smallest city on 199.

serves Grants Pass, population 34K...LOL!
Unless you want to include US 160 NM, which serves no population, incorporated or otherwise.

I was only referencing the Mississippi portion.
Why would you do that? Again, US 160 NM.

US 84 serves Wacko

US 211's current largest town served is Warrenton, with ~10k (a bit larger than I expected, actually). Historically it continued to DC.
US 89A: Kanab, UT, population 3564
If 89A doesn't count, then US 163, Kayenta, AZ, population 5189
US 8 - Rhinelander, WI (2010 USCensus - 7798).
Mike
US 730- largest city it actually passes through is Umatilla, and that's only 7,000.
US 191 serves very little population relative to its length. Despite traversing the entire height of America, it only goes through five cities with more than 10,000 people: Bozeman (40k), Rock Springs WY (24k), Douglas AZ (17k), and Jackson WY (10k), and Vernal UT (10k), and only 7 more with more than 5,000 (Lewistown MT, Livingston MT, Price UT, Moab UT, Kayenta AZ, Eagar-Springerville AZ, Safford AZ)
US 16A: Custer City (2,067)
I don't know if alternates count though.

Alternates do count, as do any primary route that have an N/S/E/W on them, because the length of those highways.

There's also Huntsville, AL which has about 186,254 people in it.

So is this now in the running?
Only if alternate routes count. If so I nominate US 101 Alt. around Ilwaco-Seaview, WA. It doesn't serve any incorporated areas and appears to have 3-4 houses along it.
OP isn't clear whether this is by state, or for the entire US route. Most cited examples are the former, though the OP's wording suggests the latter.

It's the latter, but ost of the routes that would qualify are in one state only.
QuoteIt's the latter,
How can you be sure?
Nevermind that, if it is, your US 302 example was missing Portland, ME. Surprised that even SPUI missed that...

Damn it. I blame state specific articles for splitting tables.
