Title: Smallest BGS in your area
Post by: freebrickproductions on January 18, 2015, 04:42:43 PM
Inspired by the "Largest BGS in your area (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=14481.0)" thread, I decided it'd be a good idea to have a thread for the smallest BGS in different members areas.

Probably the smallest BGS in Huntsville, AL is this one (https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=34.709667,-86.590181&spn=0.000699,0.001032&t=h&z=21&layer=c&cbll=34.709667,-86.590181&panoid=zuETlwoKGgLvLkxxZ-9sQw&cbp=12,178.07,,3,-10.92) for Drake Avenue on Memorial Parkway.

I did a search and found nothing, so if this thread already exists, please merge it with the pre-existing thread.

The two on the right in this picture come to mind. Sorry it's so grainy, but this video capture is the best picture I have of them. They're new within the past month or so. There used to be an overhead gantry with two hideous implementations of Clearview, one of which the FHWA used as an example of how not to use said typeface. I assume these two signs are intended to be temporary.

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi31.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fc378%2F1995hoo%2FRoad%2520sign%2520pictures%2FLGSsfor236onI-395_zps2f4e3c19.png&hash=0acfb1e46abc335ecbf83eac38e28dd37394e5f9)

If you want to see what used to be there, check the following Street View image. The old gantry spanned both the general-purpose lanes and the reversible carriageway. I don't know why the new sign for the reversible lanes couldn't be mounted on the old gantry.

Probably qualifies for the worst-of, particularly since the 'EXIT ONLY' is slapped on.  Honestly, the slip lane should be removed since they widened the route between the bridge and I-405.

Well, after looking around my city for 20 minutes on Streetview, this is as small as it gets:

http://goo.gl/maps/JRO2r

The sign on the left that is I estimate to only be about 2 m (6 ft) wide and about 1 m (3 ft) tall (I approximate by assuming the width of a standard car to be 1 m wide). One can compare it to the (long gone FHWA font) speed limit sign on the right.

I think that "exit-only" is going to come down once they permanently switch the HOV lanes.

Though as far as slip lanes go, I'm not sure what you're talking about. What slip lane?

Smallest in Rochester, NY:
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nysroads.com%2Fimages%2Fgallery%2FNY%2Fi590%2F100_2963-s.JPG&hash=e606a0d0ea72629e668e3ed49ec8865da6cba8f8)
This was intended to be a temporary sign while the overhead BGS was being replaced, but it was never removed.  Now it's an interesting little oddity in Rochester's signage.

And though I've never lived in NYC, the thread immediately made me think of this:
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nysroads.com%2Fimages%2Fgallery%2FNY%2Fi278%2F100_9736-s.JPG&hash=421d69858ead5581b86212fab116ce8d67f9ce09)

I was by there yesterday, and that panel is bad.  I have to presume it is a temporary installation.

If I can get a safe image of it I intend to do so, in part for the AAROADS "worst sign" collection.

Almost tempted to call someone I know at VDOT, but I think I will leave it before now - or until I can get an image of it.

I've always enjoyed these around the Binghamton, N.Y. area.  I believe they were to be temporary installations, but some of these little guys were up for over six years.

I'm assuming it's the re-purposing of an existing gantry, but it's a bit excessive...the Old Exit tab is larger than the LGS.

This sign is if I-64 still has it near Waynesboro for the exit leading to Ivy in its slim design.  Back in the 1980s it was even better as the exit tab used to stick out over both ends of the sign.  I see VDOT managed to at least fix that one, though.

These seemingly temporary signs posted for the Delaware 1 interchange along Delaware 273 have been in place so long that they were replaced with Clearview and are meant to be permanent.

I know that. But while the signs in my example aren't green, they are overhead signs unlike some of the examples, which I would consider LGSs. If that's not the distinction, than what is?

It just means the toll booth you see ahead isn't for you. I've seen these signs at toll bridges with tolls in just one direction and in places where tolls used to be charged in both directions but aren't anymore. I think New York supplements them with "Do Not Stop".

Until sometime in the last six months, US 52 at NC 66 had a tiny BGS right before the exit, but it's been converted.  This is what it looked like at the last GSV image:

https://www.google.com/maps/@36.206133,-80.299561,3a,75y,143.82h,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sL8w7QNjjYOGRnXcfY-W_Iw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1

Now it says LEFT

Well first we have these little "beauties" on US-70 on the west side of Kinston NC:

And then just a little farther east at the split we have these microscopic overheads:

^ I suspect the small supplemental sign at the bullnose is due to the fact that you actually can't see the ramp exiting the highway from the larger signage that is upstream.  I get the topographic constraints, but given the importance of the ramp, this is example of pretty poor freeway geometry.

Massive thread bump to note the two comments above were made in January 2015, and now, finally, within the past three weeks they've put up real BGSs on a new gantry at this same location, but they've left the two small signs in place as well. Strange. I don't have a picture because I've only seen the new signs in my mirrors when going the other direction in the reversible carriageway.

So those two tiny signs served as the "BGSs" for that interchange for some 16 months. Ridiculous.

I noticed that too recently; while driving into DC late one night, I saw crews prepping the signs for installation.  (I'm inclined to think that this was part of the project to create an auxiliary lane from VA-236 to Seminary Rd, hence the long delay.)  Two observations: 1) the contractor involved simply recycled the ugly Clearview signage that was installed between 2009 and 2011 according to GMSV (was hoping for replacement), and 2) they installed the signs in reverse order, placing the sign for VA-236 east (the second exit at the interchange) to the right of the sign for VA-236 west (the first exit).

The smallest that I'm aware of in my area: I-55 at Manchac (https://www.google.com/maps/@30.3145428,-90.4078579,3a,75y,162.12h,85.36t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sv7YLL61WCcTWET5vQ0StYw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656). The sign for Ruddock is the same size.

Because of how Louisiana lays out elements on the signs, we aren't going to see any of the tiny shield-and-arrow signs that you see in other states. This (https://www.google.com/maps/@30.3584554,-92.046101,3a,75y,334.83h,78.2t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sf2-x_l7SSqPIQLaxlFMEHQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1?hl=en) is a typical Louisiana sign with just a route shield.

The smallest BGS in Cenla I can think of is I-49 northbound approaching the US 167 expressway:
https://www.google.com/maps/@31.2948267,-92.4437354,3a,75y,352.68h,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sjpmKqkmKjGD3yTSeN4RWvQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

There's one just a bit bigger earlier at the MacArthur Drive/US 71 exit that only lists shields: I-49, US 167 and US 71 Bypass. I hate that with the area available a Shreveport control city is never used. In fact, there isn't a BGS anywhere for Shreveport going northbound.

For me, the definition of a BGS is "a guide sign generally in accordance with the design and function indicated in MUTCD chapter 2E". A LGS is the chapter 2D counterpart.
