Through my travels in California I've noticed that numerous local and Federal agencies have taken it upon themselves to place reassurance Sign State Route Shields on roads they maintain. Most of these "rogue" Sign State Route shields appear to be in place for continuity purposes like CA 120 in Yosemite National Park and CA 130 east of Mount Hamilton the Stanislaus County Line. While the modern California State Highway System is somewhat infamous for having Sign State Route shields being used as an indicator of maintenance it was once far more oriented towards navigational purposes. Below is a historic summary of how Sign Routes were traditionally signed in California along with many of the roadways today that aren't State maintained that have Sign State Route shields:

I guess you could say it also is/was a quality reassurance purpose, like how I would rather take a state highway than a county one. Although when it comes to the quality of the roads, I would have never have guessed the NPS maintained those highways in particular, though the other roads there such as Glacier Point and Wawona are pretty much on par. However, the signage is a different story.. I'll give them credit for using Caltrans' classic advisory-speed-in-the-diamond in places.
Looking at the picture, this is quite easy to see:
-No "California" on the CA 140 shield (on the adjacent 120 shield as well?)
-A non-Caltrans version US 395 shield
-NPS signature brown painted poles
MA 2A recently got a fake extension in Boston. It's signed, but it's not part of the route.

For what it's worth the Park Service does a pretty decent job at maintaining their primary road networks. It definitely doesn't hurt that they have an almost total lack of freight traffic in most National Parks. Some of the secondary roads are just as poor as National Forest or Bureau of Land Management but that's to be expected on low volume infrastructure. The signage is all over the place and usually not fully MUTCD, but at least it's well cared for. Either way I'm all for route continuity if it makes sense. In the case of CA 180 through Grant Grove or CA 120 through Yosemite it does make sense for navigational purposes.
Regarding those California Spades there is actually a similar Caltrans spec intended for guide signs that sometimes makes it as a stand alone shield. I have a couple "California-less" spades in my personal collection:

Similarly Grand Canyon National Park signs AZ 64 as though it exists within their boundaries.
Is this rouge enough?

A play on the misspelling of ro
gue in the thread title.

Got it right in the article and header. I'm not even sure if my computer prompts for a spell check in thread titles now that I think about.

The Old California shields has to be rogue by 2020 standards though. But this photo was posted on AAroads back in 1998 But that old button copy had to have been removed in the past decade though.

Not really rogue, more of OG sign assembly given it has a legit white button copy shield.

I distinctly remember that sign -- posted just east of the 101/134/170 North Hollywood interchange. Was there as late as 2004, IIRC.

Took me a bit to realize, but the misspelling is on NE2's part, with rouge meaning red in French. (And that shield is indeed very red!)
And yes, that is the official signage used to mark state highways in New Zealand. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_state_highway_network

The title was misspelled "rouge" and then fixed.
