a new game for those of us that like one- and two-digit route markers. This one was come up with by HB Elkins; I've added a couple tiny modifications to make the game go on longer than it would otherwise.
QuoteYou start out by posting a state route 1 sign from a certain state. Someone follows up with state route 2 from another state. The idea is to get to 50 with one route represented from all 50 states. Then the game repeats with a different state being required for each route number. For instance, if the game starts off with Indiana 1, then when it recycles another state has to be used for SR 1. And if the first game is followed up with WV 2, then WV 2 can't be used in the second round. This could last only as long as the state with the fewest amount of numbered highways, and strategy would be important. For instance, I don't know how many numbered highways Alaska has, but let's say 12. If we are in the 11th reset of the game and someone posts a KY 12 sign, then the game would die the next time we made the rounds and Alaska could not be represented.
all pictures must be from the wild. You need not have taken it yourself, though.
you may use route markers of all classifications - interstate, US, state, county, etc... but once a route number and state combination is used, it is eliminated forever (for example, Georgia US 27 will eliminate Georgia state route 27 as well.)
here's the fun part!
Photos have to make it obvious what state the sign is from! So, if you want to post a sign that was used in multiple states (neutered US shield, Goddamn Circle, Boring Square, etc), it has to be accompanied by, say, a Welcome to Kentucky sign or a Maine state-named interstate shield.
oh, and no prefixed (H-1), suffixed (1-A) or otherwise modified other route numbers. The number in by itself must be the entire designation for the route.
edit: additional rule - in the case of unresolvable hardship (say, running out of Alaska routes), a non-US-state (read, DC, Mexico, etc) shield can be used as a wild card, with the state being replaced having to be named explicitly. You cannot call unresolvable hardship until it actually arrives - if we get past route 11 and there hasn't been an Alaska posted, we gotta make it all the way to route 50 using other states. I will start us off with a route 1.

oh shit, is that what that was? My firewall blocked it at work, my mobile phone showed it as a tiny smudge about four pixels high, so I assumed it was Wisconsin based on the fact that you're from Michigan, and a kinda square-looking route shield was likely to be either a US-18 or a state route 18 (WI is not exactly known for keeping the distinction well) from one state over from you! :-D
luckily I have no cats. Here's another 34.

that is correct. we'll do 1-50 again the next iteration. Someone suggested alternating 1-50 and 51-100 rounds and I thought that was a brilliant idea. That way, different states are difficult. For example, Arizona has very few routes lower than 50, while Alaska has only 97 and 98 higher (and good luck finding an in-the-wild photo of 97).
btw, there is no tarring and feathering in this game. Just hide your cat if you feel you're about to err...

that is not how it works. You cannot split like that, using what is clearly an Idaho route on a Washington sign to count Washington! :-D (had Idaho not already been used, you could have counted Idaho since it's clearly an Idaho marker. Don't ask me about a Delaware circle in New Jersey because circles are just not worth worrying about that badly!)
here's a correct 53.

My bad- I thought that might spice things up and add some numbers (Washington alone would pick up 15, 30, 53, 84, and 95 by allowing adjacent state highway signage)

The top of the sign has the name of the interchange on all of the Pennsylvania Turnpike's exit BGS's. In this case, Lansdale is the name of the interchange. This is a carbon copy of a highway gothic font sign that was replaced not long ago. I am not sure what control city was meant to go there before.

This game is exceedingly tough. I have only been to around 20 states and trying to find a picture with correct state and number together is tricky. If the weather last Sunday near Raton, NM was decent I would have got a US-87 shield but a downpour with thunderstorms meant the pictures would have come out awful so I didn't bother filling memory cards with crappy pictures.
Besides using NM for 87, MS for 90 and AK for 98 are there any other state/number combinations that are limited for this round?

There are well known photos floating for I-94, AK 98, and DE 100, so that's good. Louisiana seems like the wild card to me- we can always default to I-95 for one of the eastern states, unless we don't use Nevada for 93- but I'd strongly recommend using a US 93 Nevada, since that seems to open up our options the most. In theory, the most logical would be to do US-93 NV / I-94 IN / I-95 RI / either ME or LA 96 / either ME/LA/SC 97 / AK 98 / either ME/LA/SC 99 / DE 100, since that maximizes our late game options, but I'm not horribly familiar with the photo coverage in ME/LA/SC/RI

Hmmm...off the top of my head Alaska would be impossible and Idaho has exactly 1 option (128, for which I have several pictures if nobody else does), but beyond that it shouldn't be too bad if we're careful (eg Nebraska has to be used early).

we'll have to wildcard Alaska then. Not too big a deal. Since we know in advance that Alaska is impossible, we can use the wildcard any time we need during that round - so that'll help us get through the tough stretches.
remember, to post a wildcard, you need to post a route that is clearly not in the 50 states, and has the appropriate route number.
Will this work for 96? ME 96 only serves Boothbay Harbor.

Hawaii also will have limited choices (state 130 and 139, county 132, 137, and 148). One of my photos already on the Web takes care of both 132 and 137, but I may need to go into my offline photos to try to get the others.
It should also be noted that the *ONLY* option for Mississippi this go-around is 145.
A summary of limitations for round 3:
AK - no route available
HI - 130 and 139, county 132, 137, and 148
ID - 128 only
MS — 145 only
Pretty sure that 106 from NM doesn't qualify - looks like it's sitting on a table. Admins, feel free to delete this post if you want to allow that one.
So here's a 106 that takes care of CT. I believe that this style of outline shields on BGSs is CT-specific.

the squares are not unique (Mass has a single gantry, likely installed by a Conn contractor, and between 1958-1961, all the square-shield states had them), but the outline shield US shape is. Conn is the only state that used outline shields with the 1970 spec "fat shield" shape.

90 does also serve Montana, but MT does not use the paddle style of sign - or the neutered square all that often.
US-117 is a one-state-only route (NC), having been eliminated in Virginia and SC well before this style of sign was used starting in 1961.

Seems to me they use the rounded corners on BGSes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:IMG_04511.JPG) and the exit tabs have significant separation. Plus, I'm not finding any evidence of an NC 121, either living or dead, so until NCDOT decides to commission one of its own, a diamond 121 should be able to be identified.

I think we've had an implicit rule of "no one (not even Froggie!) is expected to know the routing systems of every state, while the interstate and US routings are to be assumed common knowledge". There, let's make that an explicit rule!

End of County 132 on Hawaii's Big Island -- county route shields are identical to state shields (they both used to be in one system), and besides the original post allowed county route markers.
BTW, Alaska has no numbered borough/municipality route markers, so it's still out of play as we progress through the three-digit route numbers.

Remaining states for Round 2:
AK KY LA ND OK SC WV
Besides, AK are we out of options for ND or WV too?
KY and LA should have all numbers available (as well as US 150 for KY)
OK is good except for 148 and 149
SC has 145, 146 and 150
Can anyone help correct this list?
WV has only US150 available...however, KY has only US150 available as well (so one of those two states is screwed). ND has nothing (it had nothing for this whole round). LA has everything.
North Dakota has 127. We missed it. There may also be county roads available for ND, as I know they use the pentagon regularly.

Actually, WV's 150 is a state route and it's known as the Highland Scenic Highway with its own special logo sign, so I can post that one when the time comes.
KY has all the other routes available but I'm not sure if there will be any specific identifiers available since we have the boring circle or ellipse or oval.
I'm going to post this for 144 and trust that the identifier, US 60, will be OK since US 60 does not run through any states besides Kentucky that use a circle (thank you, Oklahoma, for going with the meat cleavers).

wait, what? how did we go from OK 144 to OK 145?
urgh, turns out I misread HB's post - when he said "60 is OK", he meant "60 is all right, passable, and generally within society's norms", as opposed to "60 is in Oklahoma". That's a Kentucky 144.
apparently.
now, anyone have a proper, unambiguous Kentucky 144? Or an unambiguous Kentucky of another number we haven't used yet, in conjunction with a wild card 144 from outside the 50 states?

I could go take a picture of OK 144 as I'm only about an hour from it right now, but I couldn't be bothered. Also it's too hot and my A/C is broken. I'd do it for money though. How much do you have?

The only other KY 144 photos I have are with other circle shields, plus a couple of others with US 60 in them, but there's one with a four-digit ellipse and AFAIK Kentucky is the only state that signs four-digit routes in the ellipses.

Are we going to try to do 151-200 after we hit 150? Or are we going to go back to 1?
Alright, since what I've read is that we're out of routes for ND and AK (but not WV which can only use 150), I'm going to call the unresolvable hardship clause.

I'm sure Jake will clarify, but aren't these supposed to be raw photos from the wild and not from Streetview?
I've noticed we've had a few streetview photos - while I'm not a huge fan of it, it is allowing the game to proceed, so I will allow them. That said, I encourage real photos from actual roadgeeks!
as for 151-200; how tough will that be? I note the game is getting tougher and tougher... anyone with solid knowledge of state route numbering want to give me an idea which states are going to be hosing us next round?
Given that a lot of 3dus start with 1's, this shouldn't be too bad a stretch of numbers.
At the US/Interstate/state hwy level out west:
AK still a no-go;
ND has only 2 in the 151-200 range;
MT has 2 state routes (unfortunately sharing one of these with ND, MSR 200), and 1 US;
OR has quite a few unsigned routes in this range, but also US 197/199; should be o.k.;
ID has only 2 state hwys (one is again MSR 200), but also 2 US and an interstate;
WA, CA, AZ, NM, WY, NV all look pretty good
Can't say much about county routes.
I'm surprised we haven't used county routes more. There's gotta be someone out there obsessively photographing them! :-D
looks like 151-200 is a go!
we just need a proper 144 from HB Elkins (in conjunction with a four-digit oval) and 149 from somewhere not in the 50 states, and WV 150.
Here's the KY 144.

I thought the rule was no prefixed or suffixed routes.
heh, I totally didn't think of the Florida "C-" routes that way. They were prefixed routes back when they were "S-", but now they're just "county route 157". There isn't, for example, a "county A" or "county B" set of roads to differentiate between with the prefix; it's just a cover plate for an S to save some money by reusing already extant signage (which dated to when the non-S and the S identified two well-defined different sets of roads). So, this one slides by.
(don't make him knock down the 157 sign just so a pentagon replaces it!)

Delaware is, in fact, impossible for this round, and always was.
Rhode Island only has 179 and 195 left.
Vermont only has 189 and 191 left.
New Hampshire... we screwed New Hampshire by not using it before 175. It has nothing left.
Connecticut and Massachusetts have plenty of numbers remaining, the only problem is context.

a "naked shield" (just a number on a green sign with no white background) is sufficient to uniquely identify MA.

Nothing left for SD for current state routes (don't know about former routes) in the 151-200 range. Ditto DE. Only 200 for ID. A few for OR. Don't know about ND.

ID also has I-184, US 191 and US 195. OR only has US 197 and US 199. I think ND only has ND 200 as I-194 is unsigned. SD has US 183 and I-190.
I have never been able to find an I-194 shield, so 200 it is.
179, anyone? The only 179 I have is Arizona.
Unless someone has a county route shield hiding somewhere (possible, but unlikely), Minnesota is now limited to 194, 197, or 200.
Mississippi has 182, 194, or 198.

Ohio used to use those in some "hey, this road is turning" incidences. So maybe not.

I've never seen that. Got a picture? Does it use the paddle style of sign that MA likes?
(if you show me a paddle sign from Ohio, with cut corners and the Mass. custom font, I will be forced to excrete a piece of construction material.)

double typo - I should've said "former state route 94". I don't recall offhand any old alignments of state routes getting the +100 designation, but I do recall 245 being the old alignment of US-45A (with 145 being the old alignment of US-45). So if we choose to do 201-250, then it is good to note that 245 is the only Miss. state route beginning with 2.
QuoteI don't recall offhand any old alignments of state routes getting the +100 designation,
Some of the early signage plans for the Petal bypass had old MS 42 becoming MS 142, but these signs were not implemented in the field. Otherwise, there are no known cases of former state routes even being considered for a 1xx designation.
QuoteSo if we choose to do 201-250, then it is good to note that 245 is the only Miss. state route beginning with 2.
True, but for the 201-250 range, Mississippi also has I-220.
I'd forgotten about I-220. There is US-278 as well, if we do 251-300. But the way the game is grinding along in the upper 100s, we may or may not get that far.
makes me wonder what number they'd use if they wanted to keep an old alignment of 278 in the system. 878? 106, harking back to its pre-US designation as MS-6?
Since we seem to be hung up on 179, how about a Street View capture for WI 179?

Heads up, as far as I know, we're down to only one route possible for WV. According to Wikipedia, all that is left for WV is WV-193. There is a WV-180, but we just used that number. At least with WV-193, it intersects with I-64, so there should be a chance to get it with a state-named I-64 shield.

Not sure that I have a WV 193 photo with an I-64 marker as well. It's signed "To I-64, To US 60" from WV 2 and "To I-64, To WV 2" from US 60. And most of the times I've traveled that route I've been going north. I'd have to see if I have a southbound shot with it alongside a state-named I-64. But since neither US 60 nor I-64 travel through any other states with plain squares, a shot of it with US 60 -- which I know I have, since I photographed the "END" assembly -- should suffice.

Iowa. I do not believe any other state used cutout circles with no identifier. Kentucky, Delaware, New Jersey, and Iowa are the three states that had circles in the cutout era, and the others had the state name all the way until they changed to black squares.
(certainly no other state that borders Wisconsin and Minnesota has this feature - the white sign's control cities are a bit tough to make out, but they feature "Winona, Minn" and "De Soto, Wisc", as well as local "New Albion".)

too bad I couldn't post my US-189 from Connecticut (!). It is next to a plain square 20 shield on a green JUNCTION sign, and therefore could be from any state.
so here's a really boring SD I-190, because I think that's the only possibility left for SD. I don't think any of the US-16 states, other than South Dakota, also have an I-190.

anyone who spots a state-named SD I-190 will win a prize. I have never been able to find one. In fact, an I-190 from any state. We don't have a single example in the shield gallery! Neither Illinois, nor New York, nor Massachusetts, nor South Dakota.

I think it has to do with my processor load. Right now, it's pretty high since I'm converting a video to MPEG.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but right now:
- there are no usable numbers for AK, DE, NH;
- 193 is the only usable number left for WV;
- 195 is the only possibility for RI;
- either 197 or 199 for OR;
- 200 is the only possibility for ND;
However, NM and CT are pretty wide open, as long as someone has the photos.
Well, New Mexico doesn't have a 194, so that means this is the schedule:
192: NM
193: WV
194: CT
195: RI
196: wild card
197: OR
198: wild card
199: wild card
200: ND
Although, finding a CT 194 with context may be impossible.
If someone has a CT 192 pic, there may be NM 196 and 198 photos available.
There are better photos of other NM routes, but here's a Streetview capture of NM 192 to continue the game.

Many of the Hawaii routes on your "possible" list are unsigned, except sometimes for small number plates at the bottom of milemarkers. Some other routes shown as not possible, are possible if you reach into former routes. Indeed, on the current round Hawaii was covered by a former route 151 shield. So at least for Hawaii, your list may be better as a compendium of currently-assigned route numbers, rather than of available route marker photos.
Looking ahead to the next 50 if we go to 201-250, the Hawaii possibles include Interstate H-201 (already on Web, if you ignore the H prefix on the marker), wartime 211 (already on Web, and a better choice), 220 (I can supply one), and 240 and 250 (signed routes, but don't know if I have photos lurking in my archives). There are some other former routes in the 201-250 range (wartime 223, and former 226 and 232, come to mind), but I'm not aware of any photos of those signs out there.
On top of that, I can see you focused on state/US/Interstate highways and didn't factor in county routes. Several of your "No's" for Alabama, Iowa, and Minnesota (all of which have extensive county route systems) are in fact "Yes's" instead.
(nevermind that both AL 4 and AL 74 are in fact signed in some places, and I believe there's even been an AL 42 shield that's popped up in Mobile County)
does Iowa have county routes that are solely numbered? I know their grid tends to be a letter-number combination (like "G31") which would not be allowed. And before that, they had letters only.
Minnesota, for sure, has plenty of valid county routes. Michigan has quite a few, too, as do Wyoming and Ohio.
Iowa doesn't...I missed the earlier part about alphanumerics not being allowed.

Yes, each new install done by Mobile County within the last year on a County Road intersecting U.S. 98 sees acknowledgment of Alabama 42 now. This occurs at CR 5, CR 63, and CR 31 thus far.
This game seems to be running its course. I have an idea for a new game, please tell me if it has been done before.
The game will be to post a picture with a sequential multiplex of two numbers in order from 1 to whatever. The first one would be rtes 1 & 2, the second 2 & 3, and so on and so forth. I think there are enough to make it well into three digits.
