Title: Most hated teams ever in sports
Post by: golden eagle on July 31, 2010, 04:03:28 PM
Sports Illustrated published a list of the 25 most hated teams ever in sports. The list includes college, pro and international teams. I'll tease you with three teams on the list:

9. 1989-90 UNLV basketball
16. 1974 Oakland Athletics
22. Toronto Maple Leafs

Here's the rest of the story, er, list (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/more/07/23/most.hated.teams/index.html?eref=sihp#ixzz0v5QCCaLE).

'98-'99 Man United only 10th? I guess there was a strong American bias in the list. Man U not only had to spend £28 million (at that point in soccer that was an awful lot), but only beat Arsenal to the league title after Arsenal's local rivals, Tottenham, who had outplayed ManUre in the first half of the season's last match, decided to not play very well and let Man U win, giving them the title. They also need perhaps the greatest FA Cup goal ever to break the 200 minute deadlock (90 minutes, plus 109 minutes of the replay) - an absolutely incredibly moment out of nowhere - to beat Arsenal in the FA Cup to get to the final and then there's the completely against the run of play winning of the Champions League final, by getting two scrappy goals when Munich were almost celebrating, to get the Treble. This team that just about did it three times is lauded as amazingly great, when other teams (including Man U teams and especially Arsenal's invincibles) have won the league so much easier, and missed out on other trophies by similar tiny margins to those which Man U won by in '99, don't get half as much praise from the media.

It's not just the hordes of glory seeking fans (even ignoring the millions in Asia), the cockiness of manager and players, it's the media bias towards them that makes them (Man U in general, not just the treble winning team) loathed all across England and when they lose. It's often the one thing that brings fans of two teams who don't like each, but don't have a fierce rivalry together. Leeds (who are high up on the hate list themselves) beating them in the FA Cup, at Old Trafford, this year made nearly every soccer fan that wasn't cheering on Man U be a lot happier for a couple of days.

and that's about it. Although I can't say I'm fond of the LA Angels, or even the Tampa Bay Rays these days. Those past few games against Tampa have been real fights, very well played and tough games.

1. University of Michigan (grew up an Ohio State fan)
2. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (their fans are possibly the least educated ever)
3. Boston Red Sox (their fanbase became total asswagons after 2004, enough to make a team I liked a little a team I hate- even making me root for the Yankees over them)
4. Notre Dame (goes without saying)
5. TCU (the Boise State fan in me dislikes those Horned Frogs)
6. Washington Nationals (Vive Les Expos!)

College sports (no order):

Duke
North Carolina
Tennessee
Louisville
Eastern Kentucky
Kansas

I don't follow pro sports like I used to but I list the following, mostly pro football teams:

Tennessee Titans (they will always be the Houston Oilers)
Baltimore Ravens (they will always be the original Cleveland Browns)
Cleveland Browns
Pittsburgh Steelers
Washington Redskins
Dallas Cowboys
San Francisco 49ers (beat the Bengals both times the Bengals went to the Super Bowl)

I don't watch or follow baseball anymore after the 1994 players' strike, but here are the teams I hate(d):
Atlanta Braves (back when WTBS was Channel 17 in Atlanta and was the first national superstation and they broadcasted all the Braves games, they completely destroyed the concept of rooting for your hometown or regional team. This was always Reds country but by the late 1980s there were as many Braves fans around here as Reds fans, and that's the fault of Ted Turner's superstation)
Los Angeles Dodgers
Baltimore Orioles
Oakland A's
New York Yankees
The NY Mets were on that list until my cousin, Doug Flynn got traded from the Reds to the Mets in the Tom Seaver deal. Then I started wearing a Mets hat around.

I don't watch the NBA and I'm not a hockey fan at all so I plead indifference to those sports.

NASCAR teams:
Jeff Gordon
Jimmie Johnson

My most disliked teams

1. Dork.....errr, Duke (listening to Dukie V sing their praises every winter has me reaching for the MUTE button)
2. New York Yankees
3. LA Lakers (Proof the NBA is more rigged than pro wrestling....how can this team miss the playoffs ONLY 8 times in the 64 seasons the NBA has been around without SOME help is beyond me)
4. Dallas Cryboys....err, Cowboys
5. Georgetown Hoyas
6. North Carolina basketball
7. University of Michigan (Although not being a Buckeye fan may cause some confusion, my dislike for the Weasels stems from the early 90s basketball program )
8.

Being a fan of the Bengals and Reds, i am certain you are surprised that neither the St L Cardinals nor the Steelers show up on my list...yes they are division rivals, and maybe SHOULD be hated, but i respect them instead, for their accomplishments on the field over the last several years....

The Cubs don't see it that way.  They beat the Phillies 3 out of 4 the other week but they haven't beat the Pirates very often at all this year.

Specific reasons:

Duke (winning too often*, and Dick Vitale, and being from the ACC. OK, these guys are classy but I always root against them)

Yankees (winning too often*, and being from New York)

Lakers (Hollywood trashtalking primadonna showboaters; the obnoxious party guest who won't take a hint and GTFO)

Warriors (they won a championship so long ago it conflicts with the Bible's assertion about the age of the universe. They've been terrible for so long. And local sports radio gives them saturation coverage. Any time I turn on the radio between October and July it's Warriors, Warriors, Warriors. Somebody, please relocate this team.)

Colts (because of Peyton Manning... guy has rubbed me the wrong way since day 1. That's figuratively, by the way)

NY Giants (another Manning? Who asked for that? Also, the New York thing)

That team in the south that used to be the Hartford Whalers (rage rage rage rage rage)

The Taliban Infidel-Killers (they slaughter infidels and are constantly pushing for worldwide sharia law, extermination of all other religions, and brutal mistreatment of women and children. Though I do root for them when they're playing the Yankees)

* but a grudging respect. Except for the Lakers

  • Notre Dame football - I hate a team that feels that they are so above the clouds they need NBC to look for them.
  • Any BCS Football team - the exhibition season means nothing - still I hate Notre Dame above them all because they bought their way in.

Lest I forget the Yankees, Cowboys, Red Sox, - any team that wins by buying other team's players.

I don't think it's possible for hating a team that wins to much. Except for the Yankees.... But what colleges do you like if Notre Dame wins to much?? You'd be better of hating my team (Texas ;)) for wining to much. Or 'bama, or a team like that. I don't care about small teams like Notre Dame and whatnot. I like Duke, and North Carolina. Those are pretty much the only non-Texas college teams I like.

I also hate Iowa State, Abiline Christian Univ. (anyone even heard of that one?) I pretty much hate any college in Texas other than: Texas ;),Angelo State Univ. (of course), Stephan F. Austin State Univ., TCU, and UTSA.
Go Horns, RAMS, Lumberjacks, Horned Frogs, and Roadrunners!

Roving franchises:
#1 The Indianapolis Colts - I'll never forget waking up that morning in Baltimore and hearing the Colts had left in the middle of the night.   (Talks right before then had supposedly been making progress.)

#2 Baltimore Ravens - Ever since the Colts left I wanted to see them get a team, but not the Browns!  But, they also got Art Model and his family.  But, they still won a %&$**##* Super Bowl! (and yes I was living and working in Northeast Ohio when this happened.)

#3 Tennessee Titans - Yes, I hate the local team!  If they had been an expansion franchise, I'd probably root for them some.

There are many other teams that have moved in the last 30 years, but those are the ones on the top of my list.

Colleges:
1) Tennessee - I used to like the song Rocky Top before moving down here.  Though Pat Summit's Lady Vols basketball dynasty is the exception.

2) Ohio State and Michigan - I hated hearing about them every fall I lived in Ohio.  Of course, it's even easier to dislike them now since Penn State joined the Big Ten.

General dislike:
Any New York team (especially the Yankees)
Any Pittsburgh team
The Dallas Cowboys (the cheerleaders are okay though  ;-))
Chicago Bulls (leftover from Jordan era)
Boston Celtics, LA Lakers
Atlanta Braves (they get a partial pass for being Hank Aaron's team, though)
Any team from the state of North Carolina except Duke (my dad went there)
Seattle teams (don't know why, just don't like them)

The Oakland Raiders used to be on my list, but they redeemed themselves when they returned home to Oakland after their stint in LA.  I still remember hearing a young Cleveland sportscaster say about the announcement, "Oakland Raiders, that sounds strange."  I wanted to hurl something at the TV just then!

There are, occasionally, exceptions.

Even though Bloomsburg is much close to Philly (or New York even) than Pittsburgh, most of my grade school classmates were Steelers fans.  But, this was during the Steelers glory years so they hitched a ride on the band wagon.

Now, the fact that most of those Steelers fans didn't like me (for reasons that had NOTHING to do with football) is another reason I dislike that team.

My dislike for Notre Dame is over how the media always seem to bow down to them and try to make them seem so much larger than life. Several instances:

1. When they played LSU in the Sugar Bowl and how the play-by-play crew (Terry Bradshaw, Jimmy Johnson, Howie Long) couldn't stop talking about them, even though LSU destroyed them that night.
2. When Beano Cook said that Ron Powlus would win two Heismans there back in the 90s. He never came close to one.
3. When Chet Coppack on WLS radio in Chicago said during Notre Dame's post-game show that should play in the Rose Bowl. This was after they were destroyed by USC in 2006.
4. When Lou Holtz said that Notre Dame would play for the national title a year or two ago. Yeah, and Charlie Weis would still be their coach if that had happened.
5. Again, just the overall crush the media has over Notre Dame. It's as if everyone else doesn't matter.

I don't think it's possible for hating a team that wins to much.

But that's why so many teams are hated: because they win. Even though teams like the Cowboys, Steelers, Yankees, Lakers, Celtics and Notre Dame would be high on a list of beloved teams, they could conversely be on the list of the most hated teams out there. Sometimes, it goes deeper than like, like rivalries and opponents' arrogance.

They have a lot of national championships, but most of them were a long time ago. Their last one was in 1988. Before that it was 1977. They are currently on the longest period without a national championship in their history. Any other team with their recent history wouldn't get near the attention that they do. The media still treats them as if they are relevant nationally when they aren't.

Notre Dame is the only school with its own television contract. Every Notre Dame game is shown on NBC. It's the only college football on NBC. If your team is playing ND, to see it you'll have to watch "Notre Dame Football on NBC". The announcers are hardly impartial. And while I don't usually like to generalize, from my experiences during the yearly ND-Purdue football game while I was in college, ND fans were by far the most arrogant and obnoxious out of all the schools we played.

Because Notre Dame isn't in a conference, every time they play a bowl game, the entire pot of money stays with them. When any other team plays, they share the money with the other conference teams. The reason that they hardly ever win a bowl game? They're a big TV draw, so they always get placed into more challenging bowl games than they should be to increase TV ratings.

The NY teams get air time because of the general media bias towards NY.

I have no clue about the Orioles.

I once loved a lot the Montreal Canadiens but since the mid-1990s, how the team was menaged....I did almost a 360.  I once hated a lot the Quebec Nordiques before they moved to Colorado. It sparked a good Montreal-Quebec rivalry who culminated with the Good Friday brawl of 1984! Now I miss the Nords a lot and I wish for the NHL to return to Quebec city as well as Winnipeg!

And now, I have a strange impression then the Stanley Cup might do a return to Toronto more sooner then Montreal...

also: anything Cleveland.  It must just be that my favorite sportswriter (Joe Posnanski) is a Clevelander, because there is no sane reason why Cleveland should in any way be acknowledged to exist.  Especially not with that awful mascot that their baseball team has.
Jake, I agree with you about all of that, though I don't have a stance really about their mascot, other than that he represents a horrible team in a god awful city.

Well, maybe Cleveland is a God-awful city. But, I'd rather live there than New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, Boston, San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, Nashville, Knoxville, Memphis and a bunch more places.

The people in that part of Ohio treated me better than people anywhere else I've been especially the cities I've mentioned.

Let me be clear.  I am not bashing any city I listed.

I am simply stating that I'd rather live in/near Cleveland not that the other cities are bad.

I was simply defending Cleveland for unwarranted bashing by others.

Notre Dame is the only school with its own television contract. Every Notre Dame game is shown on NBC. It's the only college football on NBC. If your team is playing ND, to see it you'll have to watch "Notre Dame Football on NBC". The announcers are hardly impartial.

To clarify, only home games are shown on NBC. Road games are shown on whatever network is contracted with that conference. And doesn't NBC air a bowl game?

I've wondered many times if you were on something after reading your posts.

But anyway, yes, OU is a very successful program.  7 national championships.  Your precious widdle Longhorns only have four.  5 Heisman winners.  Trust me, I live in Oklahoma and I constantly hear about how great OU is.  Put down the crack pipe and you might see: They're arrogant and they cheat, but they're good.

Me?  In no particular order:

-Notre Dame (I'm waiting with baited breath for their NBC ratings to totally tank and their then being pretty much forced to join a conference!  )
-Chicago Bears  (no explanation needed)
-Chicago Baby Bears (most useless fans in baseball)
-Minnesota Vikings (Brent Favre couldn't have happened to a nicer team - and they're still no closer to a new stadium in the MStP area than they ever were)
-Dallas Cowboys (Now Jerry Jones actually has to PAY for his $1G+ pleasure palace!)
-Tennessee Titans (ABSOLUTE WORST fans in the NFL! - And I see fans of every team, living just a few blocks from the hotel where the visiting teams stay at when they play in Green Bay)
-New York Yankees (George Steinbrenner was a highly honorable PERSON, but his team is PERFECT for hating!  You can BUY players, but if the chemistry isn't there, nothing else matters.)

My most hated teams?

-Colorado Avalanche (aka the Assalanche aka the Nordilanche)
-Pittsburgh Penguins (touch Sid the Kid and get a penalty BS)
-Ohio State University (need I explain?)
-University of Michigan (Go State!)
-University of Texas - Austin (rather than share, they'd rather control a massively depreciated conference)
-University of Notre Dame (bunch of primadonnas)
-Chicago Bulls (I can admire them, but I hate them at the same time)
-New York Yankees, Giants, Mets, Jets, Islanders, Rangers, Knicks, etc (it's NYC, enough said)
-Anything from California

BTW, huskeroadgeek, welcome to the Big Ten.

Aside from the usual division rival implications, I have special hate for Chicago teams.  I'm specifically talking about the Bears & the Cubs.  I don't care about any other Chicago teams much because I don't care about those sports.  Every time the Cubs are in town, Milwaukee is flooded with these assholes from Illinois coming to visit "Wrigley North".  NOTHING in sports pisses me off more than that arrogant little FIB quip.  Don't let the tollgate hit your ass on the way back to your suburb, douches.  No team is more deserving of such a long pennant drought.

The Bears have gotten a slight reprieve from my NFL ire lately do to the situation with Brett Farve and the Vikings.  The sight of that Benedict Judas in that uniform still makes me angry.

I also have to hate those goddamn Yankees and their ridiculous payroll.  It's not just that they can basically buy whoever they want and use the rest of the Majors as a farm system and have a payroll greater than like four or five teams combined, it's the arrogance about the Yankees.  Oh, we're such a storied and historic franchise; we're baseball in it's glory days, everyone has to respect us, we're salt of the Earth Americana... I'm sorry, but fuck the Yankees.  They bought all those championships.

You know why football is so much more popular now?  Parity.  Until just recently, the NFL enjoyed years of 'any given Sunday' where any team could could quite possibly beat any other team.  ESPN contributes to this Yankee hate from the rest of America.  I swear ESPN thinks the entire MLB consists of the Yankees and the Red Sox since it's usually one of those teams playing anytime they televise a game.  Like those teams need the exposure.

I'll also mention the Cowboys since they were at the peak of their power when the Packers were on the rise in the 90's so they represented the final obstacle between us and the Super Bowl and I grew to hate them quite readily.  I'm still kinda disappointed that Carolina robbed us of the chance to stomp on Dallas' nuts en route to bringing the Lombardi Trophy home.

In light of recent events and even though I don't get into the NBA much, I'm fully prepared to hate the Miami Heat for some time.  Here's another clear attempt to buy a championship; something I hate in general.

I want teams to 'earn' their championships by drafting smartly and trading minor leaguers and developing that talent into the All Stars that will one day win it all.  Shelling out a hundreds of millions dollars to cobble together a bunch of big money free agents is not an honorable means to the same end.

the draft (like most other socialism) rewards lazy owners who will not invest in their team and instead enjoy running a perpetually last-place operation.  See: the Pirates.

as much as I dislike the Yankees (I'm a Red Sox fan - it comes with the territory), I like them infinitely more than teams like the Pirates and the Royals because they're lazy, sad-feces franchises who are making no effort whatsoever to crawl out of the cellar.

say what you will about George Steinbrenner, but he genuinely loved owning his team and saw it as a lot more than a line on the balance sheet.

as for Brett Favre - I don't hate him, I just wish he'd stop receiving coverage.  The following other sports-related concepts need to go away as well: Tiger Woods, Floyd Landis, the NCAA, Rick Reilly, the RBI, and finally the entire appalling spectacle known as horse racing.

no, having a set of rules is perfectly fine.  it's rewarding lazy owners (like those that own the Pirates, Royals, Clippers, Knicks, etc) that doesn't fly with me.

speaking of the NBA draft being rigged... the NBA draft is rigged.  For those that say socialism implies fairness - here, socialism implies the exact opposite of fairness.  Sometimes the commissioner rigs it (1985), other times teams are purposely tanking just to get in the draft, which is a form of rigging all its own.

being rewarded to lose is antithetical to the nature of sport.

That's one bane of NASCAR right now.  The "start and park" teams.  Because the purse money for 23rd place is not enough better then that for 43rd place, unsponsored or under-sponsored teams, those teams will start the race and purposely pull into the garage sometime in the first 100 laps with bogus issues like "handling" and "electrical."

It may be a good business model, but not sporting. IMHO

Has there been any decision on whether or not Nebraska will continue to play Colorado and/or Oklahoma after they join the Big Ten? Other than that, I think the Big Ten is a good fit for the Huskers. Imagine playing the likes of Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin every year. The only marquee matchups they have in the Big XII is Texas and Oklahoma.

Dallas Cowboys -- and this coming from a Texan born and raised.

The Cowboys organization can go bankrupt and fold, and I won't lose any sleep (in fact, I'd dream).  I wish the Dallas/Fort Worth area can get a new NFL franchise to replace the Cowboys, then I might consider pulling for them as well.

I'm surprised the San Antonio Spurs aren't mentioned on here as the most hated ever, as I've been reading on other sports sites.  Hated for all the wrong reasons too.

We won't play any of the current Big 12 teams on a regular basis. I'm sure we'll try to schedule Oklahoma at some point. A lot of our fans are still upset about the fact we haven't played Oklahoma every year since we joined the Big 12-they were our biggest rivals from the 60s through the 90s. I'm really looking forward to all of the new rivalries we will start in the Big Ten-other than Texas and Oklahoma, just about every Big Ten team we play will be more interesting than what we have in the Big 12.

We could, but it won't happen. There were talks when we joined the Big 12 about playing Oklahoma in the non-conference in years when we didn't play them in a conference game, but they never showed any interest in it. There's been no talk about playing them in the non-conference every year now that we are moving to the Big Ten, and I doubt they'd show any more interest in doing it now.

Several comments on many of the posts here....

Triplemultiplex: "You know why football is so much more popular now? Like those teams need the exposure."

Parity in professional sports generally is not a bad thing per se....unlike the NBA or baseball were 3/4 of the teams know at the very beginning of the season they have no shot at a championship, in the NFL, select the right players, get a coaching staff that knows its chops and you could have a winner in short order....see Arizona Cardinals and their last few seasons as compared to their previous 20 years in the desert...

Your comment also reminds me of back in the late 19760s....when CBS did the NBA and every damn Sunday, we got the Lakers, Sixers or Celtics...one March in 1979 or 80, they went to San Antonio to do a Houston-Spurs game...around halftime, a group of Spur fans paraded a banner that was impossible for CBS to not show on live national TV: "HEY CBS...BOSTON AND PHILLY ARENT HERE...WHY ARE YOU?"

osu-lsu: "But there's no "socialism." The best players go to the best teams.  No helping the "lesser teams" like the "socialistic" draft does with professional teams."

Perhaps, but this is why i hate college football....if you consider a game or athletic contest to be one where both sides have a reasonably equal chance at winning, then college football, esp the big-time levels fail miserably...a vicious cycle of crushball where the big boys duck each other outside of conference play, but schedule Div IAA or Div II for guaranteed wins to keep the whiny alumni drunk and happy....(at least college basketball gets it somewhat right, where the scrappy underdog can actually play for a championship like Butler did this past April, as opposed to the current rigged BCS system where if you are not among the anointed few, you have no chance at a title shot no matter how good you may be...)  The BCS has royally screwed college football over...back in the day, you WOULD have the best teams play each other early in the season, as opposed to what happens now

(I proposed a year or two back that the NCAA take over Div IA football scheduling...and schedule a rotating system of opponents where each year the BCS teams would have to play some games against one of the other conferences....such as ACC North against  Big 12 Souith, Big 12 North against Big East, Pac 10 vs ACC Souith, SEC West vs Big Ten , etc...and not at their choosing either....so it would be fun to see Florida or USC try to play Wisconsin in Camp Randall, or Minnesota in their new outdoor park....in late November when it gets a bit nippy....or see how well Ohio State copes in the Swamp....

amn, i could SO improve Sports if i was made Universal Sports Commisioner and Athletic Dictator for Life....

Not exactly - just moved here last year; I'm a Georgia native (and thus Braves fan).

I'm glad to see the hate for Notre Dame! As a Purdue alum, it makes me happy to know that the rest of the country hates them just as strongly!

Rest assured there's a bunch of USC Trojans fans who feel the same way about Notre Dame. I'm not a Trojans fan myself but my friend in southern California has a son who's such a rabid USC fan that his bedroom walls are painted the school colors!

My most hated teams: The New York Yankees, San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants (as a Dodger fan), Dallas Cowboys (way back in the day when the Rams were in L.A., the Cowboys would always beat them in the playoffs), the Boston Celtics (as a Laker fan) and the San Antonio Spurs (as both a Laker and a Phoenix Suns fan--about five years ago, the Lakers were little more than "The Kobe Bryant Show" before the guy actually wised up and realized that you have to share the basketball if you want to win rings! About that time, having moved to Phoenix, I discovered the Suns' free-wheeling style of basketball was more fun to watch than "The Kobe Bryant Show." Now that the Lakers are good again, I'm a fan of both teams--but I'd like to see the Suns win the NBA title more than the Lakers).

The college I went to had no football team, so the band went to the basketball games. And not many people in the band actually showed up. Usually we just had two trombone players and a percussionist. I'm fairly certain the basketball coach hated us.

Yeah I like parity.  It's more fun that way.  If we can expect the same teams in the playoffs year after frickin year, that's boring.  The whole league becomes about those few anointed franchises.  And everyone not in those markets loses interest.  That means less revenue.  So it's more profitable for everyone involved to keep the sport interesting by giving last season's losers a chance to claw their way out of the basement.

I disagree.  Having grown up in the era of the Steelers and Cowboys of the 70s, et. al., I miss dynasties, even if it's a team I dislike.  And, players being associated with a franchise.  Only a few players do that today.

As it seams that winning the Super Bowl today is almost as much lucky as good, I've lost interest in the NFL.

It's comments like that that's going to make it very, very hard for my Texans team to get the win tomorrow against that talent-loaded Dallas team.....by firing up our opponents and giving them motivation to use against us.  That's what Cowboys fans have resort to....criticizing and even insulting their own team to give them fuel, which could very well work.  Thanks a lot; now those dreaded Cowboys are going to come out angry and desperate for a win.

2.  Boston Red Sox
3.  Dallas Cowboys
4.  New England Patriots
5.  Los Angeles Lakers
6.  Miami Heat (more for the media coverage than anything else)
7.  Ohio State Buckeyes (I am a Penn State grad . . .)
8.  Nebraska Cornhuskers (see above . . . think 1995)
9.  USC Trojans
10.  Chelsea FC (English soccer -- my son is a big ManU fan . . .)

So what's the problem with Chelsea? Liverpool, Man City or Arsenal are much bigger enemies.

Here's my list (rather football heavy):
1) Man U - especially this season where they've played badly in loads of games and somehow get some result out of the game
2) Australian national cricket team
3) Luton Town FC - born in Watford and so I have the rivalry between the two towns in my veins
4) Portsmouth FC - lived in Southampton and so picked up the south coast rivalry
5) Argentina national football team
6) Chelsea as they bought success, rather than worked at it (I would also dislike Man City, were it not for my dislike of Man U and the fact that money hasn't won them anything)
7) West Brom - pretty irrational, taking sides in a local rivalry 100 miles from me - I do want them to go down!
From here it's just mild dislike
8) Scottish Rugby Union team, as they suck and it's always good to beat the Scots
9) MK Dons - purely as Franchise Football sucks and as the first (and only) team in England to move more than 5 or 6 miles, they get the wrath from it
10) Leeds FC - this one's irrational, but heh

Fixed the smiley for ya :-D -ms

8. Los Angeles Dodgers

7 LA Lakers (the old school Showtime Lakers with Magic, Kareem, and Worthy)
6 Chicago Blackhawks (Thank God old man Wertz is gone)
5 Pittsburgh Steelers (team only, loyal fans but real bastards)
4 Milwaukee Brewers (my long time AL team, 2nd fav in NL now)
3 University of Wisconsin
2 Chicago Cubs (always has been my NL team)
1 Green Bay Packers (team, been a fan since I was 4. That's right. Pre-Brett. I remember Lynn Dickie and Brent Fullwood and Brian Noble)

Pretty much the only sports I routinely watch are auto racing (virtually all kinds except drag racing) and college football.  Auto racing generally doesn't translate too well to this sort of listing, and the only really passionate dislike I have in that arena is Kyle Busch.  So here's my football dislikes:

1. Auburn Tigers.  This should be self-explanatory--I'm an Oregon Ducks fan.
2. Oklahoma Sooners.  Sore losers from my experience, and I routinely watch their football games just to root for whoever's opposing them.  (I was giddy after Mizzou beat them and knocked them off #1.)
3. California Golden Bears
4. USC Trojans

Surprisingly, I don't really mind Oregon State, and I only generally root against the Beavers when they're playing the Ducks in the Civil War (though I was actually kind of glad to see Stanford beat Oregon State this year).  Their fans can be pretty obnoxious, though.

And while I don't really follow the NBA that much, as an Oregonian, this is obligatory:
5. Los Angeles Lakers

I'm also from Oregon, but I agree with your point.  Although I usually pull more for Oregon State than Oregon, I root for both.  But I have nothing particularly against Auburn for winning.  It was a close game, and the better team probably won.  I was more than mollified by my old high school winning its first state title in football, and Green Bay winning the Super Bowl.  I've been rooting for the Packers for no really good reason since I was 8; they're pretty much my favorite team in all sports.

The major thing tainting Auburn's win were the allegations against Newton and some more recent ones against the program, which I have a feeling will ultimately result in Auburn vacating that championship, like USC had to do because of Reggie Bush.  That's the real shame here, if it happens.  Of course, Oregon is also being currently investigated by the NCAA, so the same might have happened had the Ducks won.

Since I'm in the thread, here are my most hated teams:

1.  New York Yankees
2.  LA Lakers
3.  Dallas Cowboys
4.  Miami Hurricanes
5.  Oklahoma Sooners

But over time, this has shifted around.  At various times, I'd have put the Pittsburgh Steelers, Florida State Seminoles, Texas Longhorns, or others on the list.
Don't expect any rational explanation on why I hate these particular teams, rationality has nothing to do with being a sports fan!

I see your point as well, and agree that there has to be winners and losers--that's part of the game.

But yes, $cam Newton does have a lot to do with my dislike of Auburn.  The dealings around him shady, and not just the business with his dad shopping him around--the guy essentially got kicked out of Florida for poor academics and behavior.  On top of that, he's largely the product of SEC hype.  Newton was a non-factor for much of the BCS Championship game, and really, it was Fairley and Dyer than won that game for Auburn.  Oregon might have pulled it off had Dyer not executed that spectacular play at the end of the 4th quarter when he managed to keep his knee off the ground.

The Dallas Cowboys and Notre Dame are two teams I really don't like.  I've been a Beaver fan since 1967 but there is no hatred for the Ducks' athletic teams on my end and I liked it when they won the CBI as OSU did a couple years ago.  It's too bad they lost to Auburn in the title game but if any Pac-10 team is playing in a bowl game or for a national title, they get my support even if they are the rival team or one that has hammered us more often than not.

Favorite memory: OSU 41  Notre Dame 9 (2001 Fiesta Bowl)  The winningest team of the 20th century lost to the losingest team of the 20th century on the first day of the 21st century.  The Irish have yet to recover from that loss.

For the next two weeks, the Tampa Bay Lightning will top my list of hated teams, but the following list is more of a regular basis.

1. Pittsburgh Penguins
2. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State (SIC) University Hoakies (they themselves misspelled it that way on souvenir cups, so I prefer to honor their own mistake when I use that name)
3. Philadelphia Flyers
4. New York Rangers
5. Maryland Terrapins
6. UNC Tar Heels
7. Dallas Cowboys
8. Philadelphia Phillies (primarily due to fan behavior when they visit DC)
9. McLaren-Mercedes
10. Los Angeles National League Franchise (my parents, and all my other relatives except two cousins younger than me, grew up in Brooklyn)

The Yankees, Orioles, Red Sox, etc. do not make my list because I do not watch American League baseball except when the Nationals play an AL team. When I was a kid I liked the idea of the DH because I thought more offense was good, but I didn't appreciate the strategy that goes into the traditional rules, and I definitely didn't understand how much the DH unnecessarily prolongs AL games.

10. Rutgers Scarlet Knights (every single one of them)

Of course, noticeably missing from my list is the New England Patriots, but that's because they are my favorite football team. ;)

You hate the Rangers, Penguins, and Flyers... are you somehow a Devils fan? The Crapitals are fortunately not near that division.

Trust me when I say this, the Penguins and Crapitals have a major rivalry.  We met them a lot of times in the playoffs in the '90's.

That much I understand, but why Flyers and Rangers also? There's no rivalry there with Washington that I know of.

When I was growing up, the Capitals played in the Patrick Division: Washington, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Devils, Rangers, and Islanders. It was a GREAT division in terms of rivalry and in terms of geographic compactness. Back then the NHL scheduled a lot more Friday-Saturday home-and-homes where, say, the Caps would play in Philadelphia on Friday night and the following night the Flyers would return the visit here. The playoffs were division-based until Bettman came up with the NBA-style conference-based system in 1993 or so. Most hockey fans agree that true rivalries are built in the playoffs, and for much of the 1980s the same four Patrick Division teams made the playoffs every year (Washington, Philadelphia, the Islanders, and the Rangers), with some variation in who played whom. You had to win two series against division foes to advance to the conference finals. It made for a lot of great divisional rivalries in those days. The reconfiguration of the league coupled with the conference-based system means that it's harder to develop a rivalry these days if it didn't already exist–thus, most of us who have been Capitals fans for 20+ years still hate the old Patrick Division rivals more than we do the Southeast Division teams.

Speaking of most hated teams, HA HA to the LA Lakers!  All I cared about regarding the NBA playoffs was that the Lakers lose and boy did they ever.  To quote the movie The Hunt for Red October, "Way to go Dallas!!"

It's gotta be the Yankees (AL) and Dodgers (NL) in baseball, Lakers and Celtics in basketball...and Cowboys in football. The problem is, the underdog teams get abit more sympathy for disastrous postseason losses or failures like a dreaded curse is a tradition (esp. the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs). Luckily, the SF Giants won last year's world series, though they almost lost the division title (NL West) to the Padres by a game...the outcome would been totally different.

I root for the Angels in baseball and the Ducks in hockey. Anaheim is expected to have a NBA team in the near future, yet they hadn't had football since the Rams left L.A. They played in pre-2002 Angels' Field (then Anaheim stadium) in 1995. The Angels were first "L.A.", "California", "Anaheim" and once again "Los Angeles of Anaheim" without really moving out.

If you hate the Heat, they're just over eight minutes away from going cold. I don't really like Dallas either, but I find myself pulling for them because the media crowned the Heat as champions the minute LeBron James announced he was going to Miami.

9. McLaren-Mercedes

This one caught me by surprise; I'd really expect that most people hate Scuderia Ferrari for more political whining, rule-bending, and unsporting twists than every other team put together. In short, they're the New York Yankees of Grand Prix racing, but the truth is they are the one racing team with a mythos and legend that few other teams have. Having utterly dominated the sport from 2000-2004, and playing games with team orders, doesn't help either.

McLaren started the trend of the corporate-branded, new-speak press conference heralded, everything-run-by-a-perfectionist, racing team that eventually everyone copied (save maybe Red Bull and the lesser teams)...which is kind of reprehensible and annoying in its own right.

Truth is, I don't really hate teams anymore, but more of what sports is becoming, or at least, most sporting media: Twitter is not a medium used well by people with a 10th-grade education. ESPN gives 30-minute/hour-long soul-less press conferences, which are generally free from content. Players that generally spout the same tired phrases and bland cliches that we've heard a million times. We hear more about a contract re-negotiation and fantasy scores than about someone busting their hump in some other form of competitive sport. Non-competitive stuff like essentially meaningless NFL combines, draft predicting (never mind I totally do not understand the mindset of someone watching hours of draft-day coverage), OTAs, et cetera. It's like the gathering of minutia has become a sport in itself.

Then again, I'd really prefer the SEC football conference just becomes its own football league. :)

I honestly didn't realize how much it had swung in our favor.

I stopped following the Predators closely a few years ago as the team's modus operandi seems to be:
1) Get a few hot, young players
2) Barely squeak into the playoffs
3) Get bounced out in the first round
4) Trade or don't resign players when their contract runs out.
5) Repeat ad nauseum

And while doing so, rely heavily on your goalkeeper because you can't score to save your life especially on the power play.

Most years, the Preds are in the top 5 or 10 in penalty killing but in the bottom five or ten in power play goals.

This mode of operation may make the team money, but gives us no real chance at the Cup.

But i figured Nashville fans would LOVE the CBJ...afterall, there arent many guaranteed wins on a typical NHL schedule, and we provide the Preds with a few every season!

2 OU Sooners (landgrabbers)
3 aTm Aggies (do the other 10 games besides the UT game matter?)
4 MN Vikings (will never win the big one)
5 Alabama (roll turds!)
6 Nebraska (we have a football team and..well, thats about it)
7 Washington Redskins (ever getting rid of the racist name?)
8 Phi Eagles
9 Notre Dame (would rate higher but they arent as smug these days)
10 Iowa (we have a football team and American Pickers and, well, thats about it)

^ The story is that The Seminole Nation gave their approval of the Florida State mascot , name, and game traditions. and they have someone dress up in warpaint and throw an arrow down on their home turf before the game begins. Even speaking as a Gator, it's definitely bad-ass...although we do remind them that they were an all-girls school until the late-1940s.

Okay, so there's one team that annoys me, especially even FSU fans admit that having only one very repetitive chant gets annoying after a while. We have more than a few at Florida Field.

eh.  as much as I dislike Ohio State, I think the NCAA is a million times worse.  it would be one thing to argue on behalf of amateurism if the school itself were also running its football program "for the love of sport".  Alas, the schools, the bowls, the NCAA themselves... they're all raking in money hand over fist, and to deny the athletes (ya know, the actual people who deliver the product) a piece of the action is gravely unfair.

I'm with you on that.  The NCAA functions as a minor league for the NFL and NBA.  But the players are not compensated for their contributions toward this multi-billion dollar endeavor.  Supposedly they're getting an "education" out of this deal, but the 40 or 50 grand most of their scholarships are worth pales in comparison to the billions raked in by schools and the NCAA through apparel and video games and advertising.  Yet a when a student-athlete accepts a pair of shoes or a car that fucking works from a booster, suddenly they're giving up Heisman's and bowl games.

What's funny is Title 9 means there has to be a woman's sport for every man's sport, and some complain about how much the football program gets and the coaches are paid, but they actually make the school money in most cases.  I love UT softball but those 500 tix for each of 25 home games dont compare to the 100,000 the football team sells for each of 6 games.

Like these FB teams all have to cheat to get ahead, apparently.  If NFL had a minor league, how many of these kids would go to college?

-New York Yankees
-Green Bay Packers
-Minnesota Vikings
-Detroit Red Wings
-Vancouver Canucks
-Boston everything (not so much the Bruins anymore)
-Dallas Cowboys
-Indianapolis Colts
-Miami Heat

Some of these may sound like strange teams to hate, but if you're a Chicago sports fan, you'll know why I hate almost every one of these teams.

Seems like you're more of a Wrigley Field fan than an actual baseball fan.

It's a pretty safe bet the most hated teams are usually the most successful:

MLB: Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Giants (among some others)
NBA: Lakers, Celtics (hatred for these two probably eclipse all others, including the Miami LeBosh)
NHL: Red Wings
NFL: Everyone hates the Patriots
MLS: No one hates on teams they don't watch

Don't follow international sports too much, so I don't know of any "most hated" teams, although I'm sure Manchester United is up on that list somewhere.

That's because they haven't been excellent at kicking an oblong ball through a giant H for over 10 years.

Jerry Jones is annoying though...just shut up. He's the T.O./Chad Johnson of team owners (I know, that's a backwards-compatible way of looking at things).

What I hate most about the Viqueens (after living 37 years in Minnesota) was that every year they think they'll win it all, and get so smug about any small bit of success.

As a lifelong Vikings fan, I'll be the first to admit that we have some of the most bipolar fans in sports and it pisses me off to no end. Win the season opener, and they'll proclaim a Super Bowl win...lose in Week 2 and the same fans think the team's doomed. So in short, you're pretty much right. I try to be much more realistic.

Being a Yankee fan these days (at any time since about 1935...) is like being born on third base, thinking you hit the triple personally, and being smug about it.  No one, no one, more than 50 miles from New York (except upstate) has any excuse for rooting for the Yankees, and those in the New York area can root for the Mets.  Particularly when they're beating the Braves (which they were a few minutes ago.  But no matter - the Braves are still nine games back.)

I also had a a bit about being born on the bandwagon, but I can't work it into the metaphor.

Title: Re: Most hated teams ever in sports

I always thought one should root for the pro teams in one's geographical area, unless one had a personal reason to root for another team (the team from where you used to live, a team with a local player on it, etc.) Where I live was always Reds country until Channel 17 in Atlanta, WTBS, started getting on every cable system in the free world and started beaming Braves games to a nationwide audience. When I was in my mid to late 20s, I started noticing just how many teenagers and folks in their early 20s were Braves fans instead of Reds fans. I just couldn't comprehend or understand. I'd rather listen to a Reds game on the radio than watch a Braves game on TV ... well, at least until the '94 strike; after that I don't give a crap about MLB. I don't follow the Reds anymore.

alas a far too light penalty imposed on them.  the Stalinist "let's rewrite the number of victories the school had" just strikes me as odd, and going forward they still have a football program.

significantly less major violations (payment of minimal stipends to students) led to a total "death penalty" ban on football at SMU in the late 80s.  let's get this straight - paying a fair wage is bad, but raping small children is fine?  all hail the football-industrial complex!

How about the Yankees?  They hold the record for being in the most World Series than any other team.  At one time Steinbrenner was firing managers like people changing undershorts.  How many times was ol Billy Martin at the helm?

Love em or hate em, I choose the latter as to me they seem like they have a lucky streak just like the Lakers in the NBA.

I used like to see ol George get mad when his Yanks lost a game, and still even thought he is either 6 feet under, in an urn, or above ground in a mosuleum I love to see them loose!  Hopefully turning in his grave when they do.

Heh, it's amazing that the Marlins haven't figured a bit more regularly in thisvthread; they do quite a bit to make sure their own fanbase is occasionally disgusted with them. Yet, they've won two championships within their first 10 full seasons, but there's many things about the current owners' attitudes and behaviors that verge on despicable.

Team China and it's athlete mills.

Team Australia is normally good for some banterous rivalry, but currently they are so pitiful there's little point.*

Also the fictional Team EU which will make an outing when various EU bigwigs say "we won 50+ golds" (using current total). As well as being a nation that only a handful of people think exists, it's cheating to have up to 27 times the quota of athletes/teams in each competition - and that's not cancelled out by the ability for a Team EU to make a conglomerate team.

*not least as they are letting down the side of the fictional 'Team the-Queen-reigns-here' - Jamaica's 2 so far is putting in as many golds as Australia and Canada combined, and New Zealand is putting in a handsome 3 to give a total of 23.

Association Football, Futsal, Rubgy Union, Rugby League, Ice Hockey, Handball, Basketball, Roller Hockey, various Para-sports (wheelchair basketball, boccia...), track and field...

I did struggle to think of team sports that they didn't have a team for (Gaelic, Canadian and Aussie Rules Football being three more. Shinty, Hurling and Lacrosse being another three. Netball, Rounders and Benchball being a third additional three).

Big 4 being the American Big 4 (American Football, Ice Hockey, Baseball, Basketball), I take it. They have 3 of the British Big 4 (Association Football, Rugby Union, Rugby League, Cricket).

That's interesting.  How does a guy from Texas come to hate on small market, upper Midwest teams like this (and the ones from Minnesota) that have never really been all that good?  I totally get people hating the Pack, cuz, well, they're perennial playoff participants, but the Boozers?  It's because of Ryan Braun, isn't it?
Well I'll just say that the anomalous PED test is flanked by clean ones with no deviation in output.

NIU now going into a possible 3-peat out of a possible 4 appearances and was ranked ahead of the drunken Badgers for the bowl season)
And how about this year's Default Bowl?  Truly a proud season for Bucky...

I can't get too passionate about college sports because of the whole "exploitation" thing.  Multi-billion dollar enterprise, but the 'student athletes' get in trouble for accepting free shoes; what a charade!  At least they get an education... in "communications"... or "kinesiology".  Those are good fall-back career paths after you tear your ACL.

I hate the Brewers because, living in Minnesota, I was a Twins fan 1979-1983 or so.  At the time the Brewers were full of fat out of shape boring players like Gorman Thomas.  Brewers is a good name..for a softball team.  Plus, they should have stayed as the Seattle Pilots.

You may be the only person I've met that isn't a fan of a rival team that hates the Twins. I mean how can you hate them? They're completely harmless and they almost never get involved in any types of scandals.

EDIT: "You" referring to the people in this thread as a whole.

MLB: New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox
NBA: I can't hate the Celtics anymore because they lost all their stars
NFL: New York Jets (quit with all the fucking pointless drama)
NHL: Can't hate on anyone  :)
NCAA: Iowa Hawkeyes, Ohio State Buckeyes
Apologies for not posting this in the first post

Some old-timers from Washington surely hate the Twins because they were originally the Senators but moved away. Well before my time, though.

Everybody outside of the states bordering Texas – except for bandwagoners and transplants – hates the Dallas Cowboys. Taken on a national level, it's not even close.

speaking of broadcasting and other personnel not involving the players themselves: I went to a baseball game in person for the first time in several years (Dodgers at Rockies, July 4), and every half-inning there was some kind of oil-slick overproduced promotion for some bank or car dealer or yet another set of assholes.  whatever happened to going to a baseball game and watching some baseball?  so, the most hated team for me: the marketing team.

I'm always far more irritated that they stop selling beer toward the end of the game. How am I supposed to get through another boring two innings of baseball without beer?

(back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back back)

The annoying thing about the "back back back" schtick is that Berman, and most of the other announcers who do it, are doing it incorrectly. Red Barber is usually credited as originating that call when he was describing Al Gionfriddo's famous catch in Game 6 of the 1947 World Series. Barber was describing Gionfriddo racing out to the outfield wall to rob Joe DiMaggio of a hit and he used the word "back" six or seven times in following the fielder out to the wall. "Back" makes sense because the wall is to the fielder's back when the pitch is thrown. Berman is following the ball, so the word "back" doesn't make any sense at all because when you hit the ball, it's only going "back" if you foul it off back behind the plate. Part of why Barber's version of the call is classic is that he was relating that what made Gionfriddo's play great wasn't just the catch but the fact that he was able to get to it at all. Compare that to the announcers like Mel Allen: "It's going, going–caught up against the wall." You never knew the fielder was anywhere near the wall in the first place because Allen was following the ball rather than the fielder.

You can hear Barber's famous call at this link. (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=19054891)

Make that "any professional team", who competed against other professional teams located in the U.S. There are examples in both football and baseball.

And not that many years after the first Senators departed D.C. to become the Twins, the expansion Senators franchise left for Texas.  I don't think D.C.-area fans have that much animosity against either - the one where the hatred still burns hot (among fans of the former Baltimore Colts) is for the late Robert Irsay and his move of the Colts to Indiana.

When the Colts visit the  Ravens in Baltimore, the scoreboard never reads Colts, always just Indy.

I think more than anything, I don't watch a lot of sports and I'm not that big of a sports fan unlike most others around me simply because I just hate the way things are being blown over when they shouldn't be, the way that certain people have to give preferential treatment, and people who "know" any sport when deep down they don't appreciate it enough to know it. Some other thoughts:

- The more I think about the Aaron Hernandez case, the more I start to hate the Patriots and that's the only team in my opinion that I hate in the NFL.

- Another nuance I hate are certain pundits who gave Yasiel Puig the shaft saying he didn't deserve to play in the All-Star. Bullshit! Puig is just as good of a player, albeit a shy player, with the best combination of stats to play in the All-Star and perhaps the World Series if the Dodgers get their act together.

- The NFL itself is getting more garish the more we hear about players being arrested for numerous charges. The season isn't beginning yet, and already, more than a dozen players since the Super Bowl have been cuffed. That's just mind boggling.

- I once considered Lance Armstrong a hero, but then when I discovered that he was charged with doping and the cycling community gave all seven of his Tour de France titles the shaft, I now call him a coward. He deserves to be named a coward for doping and trying to hide it like we didn't know. Yeah, thanks, Lance, you punk coward! You ain't no hero anymore! Forget it. You're just a Z E R O!

When I hear people say they hate the Yankees because they win too much and use their money to do it, I wonder why they don't simply hate on Major League Baseball, whose structure is basically set up to make this feasible.

Boston fans hated the Yankees for buying championships, oddly claiming solidarity with the Pittsburghs and Kansas Cities of the world.  Then they bought a couple of their own and found they liked the practice just fine (sorry, KC and company).

In a system where the largest market generates the most money and the salary market is essentially unregulated, New York will always be in the best position to win.  Baseball is pretty much designed to have a very good Yankees team almost always.

If you hate that the Yankees dominate, your enemy is named Selig more than it is Steinbrenner.

Go back to the late 1940s and 1950s, when the three New York teams dominated. In 1947, 1949, 1952, 1953, 1955, and 1956 the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Yankees met in the World Series; in 1951 the New York Giants played the Yankees; in 1950, 1957, and 1958 the Yankees played out-of-town opponents; and in 1954 the Giants played an out-of-town opponent. Oddly, the only time the Dodgers played an opponent other than the Yankees in the World Series were 1916 and 1920–throughout their goofy years, they kept running into the Yankees and losing (except for 1955).

My mother was a teacher in Northern Virginia until she retired a few years back and one of her male colleagues–whom I presume to be quite young because of what he asked her!–asked whether her family rooted for "the Yankees or the Mets" when she was growing up. She replied that she grew up in Brooklyn and you rooted for either the Yankees or the Dodgers. Apparently he was quite startled. I told her she should have thanked him for the compliment in thinking she was so much younger than she is, but she said it was pretty clear from his reaction that he was just ignorant of baseball history! (My mom grew up in Bay Ridge. My father grew up in Flatbush and was just old enough to be allowed to go to Ebbets Field by himself when the Dodgers folded.)

A colleague (now retired) was born  and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. and a Dodgers fan.  He's told me stories of the first time the Dodgers won a World Series in 1955, and of getting into fights with (N.Y.) Giants fans at their home park, sometimes called the Polo Grounds.  The rivalry between the N.Y. Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers was every bit as spirited as the one between the Bronx Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, probably made more intense by both teams playing in the same league and being physically so close to each other.

According to him, the reaction in 1957 among Brooklyn Dodgers fan when the team announced they were moving to Los Angeles was one of disbelief, perhaps in part because the team had so recently (and after decades of futility) won a World Series.

As you probably know, someone from Brooklyn, N.Y. never says they are from "New York."  Always Brooklyn.

Indeed if one of my relatives from Bay Ridge headed into the city, they'd say "I'm going to New York," never "I'm going to Manhattan." Sort of similar to how signs on the Belt Parkway direct you east to Long Island even though you're already on that island.

Datelines from AP game stories in old newspapers right up until the Dodgers moved were always Brooklyn and never New York. Today, games at the Barclays Center (where the Brooklyn Nets play) are datelined New York.
