Title: Place names you can spell backwards and still get a name
Post by: Flint1979 on April 04, 2025, 11:38:12 AM
Saginaw spelled backwards is Wanigas. Wanigas is the name of a credit union in Saginaw (well used to be until they merged with Financial Plus Credit Union. But I always thought the Wanigas name was a cool play on Saginaw being spelled backwards.

There's one obvious example in West Virginia:  War --> Raw

But here's a fun one that might not count but is worth mentioning:  Paw Paw --> Wap Wap

To the best of my knowledge, this has never been a name, but probably should be:

Palindromes is what I first thought of when seeing this thread. The first such places I thought of were Navan, "Southern" Ireland and Noyon, department no. 60 (Oise), France.

Aksarben is formerly the horse racing track and sports arena they had in Omaha and lives on as the Aksarben Crossing shopping area.

Along the same lines, there was once an adult entertainment venue in Topeka, Kansas named Sasnak.

Yewed, Oklahoma, was named such for similar reasons, though in that case both Yewed and Dewey were named after Admiral George Dewey.
