FWIW, I don't think any of my sister's teachers required that she do this. Granted, she's six years older than me, but it was a small town, and I don't remember seeing anyone else in town with textbooks covered in brown paper, nor did any of the teachers require it when I got to high school. I think she just did it to be different.

This hits home for me. Cox is one of the MSOs that my company works for. We're located in Park City. The serial killer BTK lived in Park City. (In fact, he worked with our company when we opened our current building, as he was employed by the city in code enforcement.) One of the ways he gained entrance to victims' homes was to disguise himself as a telephone repairman. When I started working here, his reemergence was within recent memory. It was very important for our cable guys to
not look like a technology rando.

Interestingly, I can't find an attestation that says that truncation must be from one of the ends. Both of the dictionaries I consulted emphasize that it's a shortening by removing a portion. In Perl, the
String::Truncate module takes a given string and shortens it to a given length, and you can tell it to delete from the beginning, middle, or end. Python uses
truncate to shorten a file specifically and what gets truncated seems to depend on the particulars of a file pointer in such a way that I don't know that's it's a relevant example.

I always figured truncation was shortening by removing any portion, regardless of where. In mathematics it does specifically refer to shortening by removing digits to the right of a decimal point, but we're not doing mathematical truncation here.
