Roads and ice hockey, together at last!
NOVI, Mich. (AP) - Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom is having a street named after him in a city about 30 miles northwest of Detroit.
The city of Novi will change Arena Drive to Nick Lidstrom Drive during a March 24 ceremony. The city announced Wednesday the event will take place at the City of Novi Ice Arena.

Thread inspired by above thread on Midwest-Great Lakes page.

In Atlanta, part of Capitol Avenue was renamed Hank Aaron Drive.
In Knoxville, TN, Yale Avenue was renamed Peyton Manning Pass.

Any other roads renamed in honor of sports heroes?

I believe I-70 in St. Louis is the Mark McGwire Freeway.

CA-56 (not an interstate) is the Ted Williams Freeway.  the last leg of I-90 in Boston contains the Ted Williams Tunnel.

Louisville has a Muhummad Ali Boulevard, while the former Dallas-Fort Worth Turnpike (I-30) is now the Tom Landry Freeway...

Also, Florida State Road 836 is the Dolphin Expressway, named after the local NFL team (who at the time was fresh off becoming the only undefeated team in the Super Bowl era).

Dan Marino Way (formerly Honey Hill Road), is the stretch of road alongside the Sun Life stadium. Considering he was the quarterback, I think Dan Marino Pass would have been a more appropriate name.

The Don Shula Expressway (Florida SR 874) was named for the coach of the Miami Dolphins. We like our football in Florida.

My post about streets named for a couple of racing drivers...

Briefly venturing into the realm of roadgeek trivia, is it safe to say that McGwire is the only "de-interstated" sports figure in American road history?

By coincidence, a part of NW 107 Avenue in western Miami (known as Sweetwater) was renamed for local baseball player Jose Conseco, but it may also be removed. Both played together for the A's, ironically.

NY 9A West Side Hwy in Manhattan, renamed the Joe DiMaggio Hwy.

Strictly speaking, depending on what part, it's West Street, 11th Avenue, or 12th Avenue (and then the Henry Hudson Parkway). "West Side Highway" is a colloquialism formerly applied to the old Miller Elevated Highway, now applied to its surface boulevard replacement - though it has sunk in enough to appear on some signs. And it was never renamed the "Joe DiMaggio Highway", that name was a secondary name slapped on top of the existing names (and, thankfully, few signs mention it). Kinda like how 6th Avenue is also "Avenue of the Americas".

There's also the Jackie Robinson (formerly Interboro) Pkwy.

And the Gil Hodges Marine Parkway Bridge. But nobody uses any of these names. :)

Before Shea Stadium was torn down, there was a Casey Stengel Plaza there.

Check out fourth definition from Merriam-Webster:

"Definition of HERO
1a : a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability b : an illustrious warrior c : a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities d : one who shows great courage
2a : the principal male character in a literary or dramatic work b : the central figure in an event, period, or movement
3plural usually he·ros : submarine 2
4: an object of extreme admiration and devotion : idol"

The above individuals, teams and animals all seem to have received enough admiration to have a road named after them.  Definition 4 works.  1.c. could also work: being admired for achievements and noble qualities.

Roads named after golfers are dime-a-dozen in the south.  Just google search "Nicklaus Dr, Florida."  Same with Snead, Palmer, Hogan, Sarazen, Player, Trevino, etc.

The road in front of the Metrodome in Minneapolis is named "Kirby Puckett Dr."
There's Dan Patch Avenue at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds named for a racehorse.  The Twin Cities suburb of Savage was named after his owner, Marion Willis Savage.

The road connecting two retail shopping centers in Framingham and Natick, MA is called Flutie Pass, named for Natick's own Doug Flutie, who had a rather memorable hail mary pass to win a game over the Miami Hurricanes when he was playing for Boston College.
He also was in the Canadian Football League and the NFL (Bears, Bills, Chargers & Patriots) as well.

Cambridge, Mass., has a Rumeal Robinson Pl., named after the Michigan basketball player I mainly remember for keeping Seton Hall from winning the NCAA championship.  I'm surprised there's no Pat Ewing street, since he went to high school there.

And of course there is Yawkey Way in Boston, named for that hero to all us Yankee fans, former Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey.

Omaha has Bob Gibson Dr., which is on the north side of what used to be Rosenblatt Stadium, the former home of the College World Series.  I believe the official Nebraska Welcome Center once you come into Nebraska from Iowa officially has the Bob Gibson Dr. address.  There's also Bob Boozer Dr., way out in West Omaha, named for the former basketball player and 1960 Olympian.

On the day I left Indianapolis the second time I was there, I went west on I-74 and seem to recall a Jeff Gordon Drive at one of the exits.

For years, we've had Paul W. "Bear" Bryant Drive running past the stadium named in his honor.  But in recent years, the city has also added small streets named for other championship coaches (Frank Thomas, Wallace Wade, Gene Stallings) all in the general vicinty of the stadium.  I presume we'll have one named for Saban eventually.

This map will kinda give you a glimpse of the neighborhood near the stadium and the street names.

For our disdain of the highway number, why not rename Interstate 99 the JoePa Expressway?

The city of Coralville, IA renamed part of their main street as Hayden Fry Way (Hayden Fry was the University of Iowa's football coach in the 70s)

Iowa City has an Evashevski Drive (https://www.google.com/maps/@41.6591076,-91.5524694,17z) near Kinnick Stadium named for Forest Evashevski, a successful coach for the Hawkeyes in the 1950s who died in 2009.

Cedar Rapids has Kurt Warner Way adjacent to Kingston Stadium, where the future NFL quarterback played high school football in the late 1980s. It's not on Google, but it is on OpenStreetMap (http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=17/41.96733/-91.68903).

Here, about two blocks from my current residence, in Appleton, WI:

http://goo.gl/maps/ba4IB

This was S Oneida St (the main street southward out of downtown Appleton) until the bridge in the background, which bypassed it and cut it off, was opened in 1980, then 'S Olde Oneida St' (the part south of Water St, the intersecting street in the image, is still Olde Oneida St) and then changed to the current name about five years or so ago.

Why that player, well known for playing for a team that is located well out of state, in this city?  He grew up in Appleton.

Minneapolis had Kirby Puckett Way by the Metrodome, but Kirby's life went off the rails after he left baseball, and the Metrodome is gone, and so is that street. Nothing I could find for any Twins star by Target Field. Killebrew Drive is stilll near the Mall of America, though, site of Metropolitan Stadium where the Twins first played.

There is a golf course that winds through a neighborhood near me, and many streets are named for prominent golfers. My favorite is Chi Chi Drive.

Tyler, TX:
In recent years, the city constructed a new arterial on the west side of town, and named it for former University of Texas and Houston Oilers football player Earl Campbell.  He attended high school a few miles up the road from the new street, dubbed Earl Campbell Parkway.

Jack Nicklaus Freeway is I-270 in Columbus, Ohio.

For a while when I-270 was first dubbed the JN Freeway, they added a named panel on some of the pull-through BGSs around the belt.  Most were gone by the late 80s.

Ted Williams twice left one of the most successful baseball careers ever in order to go serve with distinction in two wars.

I wouldn't worry about hero worship today.  Judging by the average girth of kids today, athletes are not people many of them are striving to emulate.

The old Tiger Stadium was located at the corner of Michigan and Trumbell.  The opposite corner was (Al) Kaline & (Mickey) Cochrane.  I believe Trumbell should be re-named for Alan Trammell.
