Roads and ice hockey, together at last!
NOVI, Mich. (AP) - Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom is having a street named after him in a city about 30 miles northwest of Detroit.
The city of Novi will change Arena Drive to Nick Lidstrom Drive during a March 24 ceremony. The city announced Wednesday the event will take place at the City of Novi Ice Arena.

Thread inspired by above thread on Midwest-Great Lakes page.

In Atlanta, part of Capitol Avenue was renamed Hank Aaron Drive.
In Knoxville, TN, Yale Avenue was renamed Peyton Manning Pass.

Any other roads renamed in honor of sports heroes?

There are quite a few.  A handful offhand:

Wisconsin:
Lombardi Ave, along with several other nearby streets (Green Bay)

Kentucky:
Man O War Bd (Lexington)

Georgia:
Bobby Jones Expressway (I-520 in Augusta)

Leads to a second question; what other interstates are named for sports heroes?

I believe I-70 in St. Louis is the Mark McGwire Freeway.

CA-56 (not an interstate) is the Ted Williams Freeway.  the last leg of I-90 in Boston contains the Ted Williams Tunnel.

Part of I-40 going into Wilmington NC is the Michael Jordan Higway.

There is a Steve Yzerman Drive along the west side of the Joe Louis Arena in downtown Detroit.

There's a James "Cool Papa" Bell drive in Jackson. It's the road that leads to the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. Bell was a Negro League player who was born in the Starkville area.

Hot Rod Hootenanny

Pete Rose Way and Ezzard Charles Dr. in Cincy.
Please, don't sue Alex & Andy over what I wrote above

Louisville has a Muhummad Ali Boulevard, while the former Dallas-Fort Worth Turnpike (I-30) is now the Tom Landry Freeway...

Also, Florida State Road 836 is the Dolphin Expressway, named after the local NFL team (who at the time was fresh off becoming the only undefeated team in the Super Bowl era).

Dan Marino Way (formerly Honey Hill Road), is the stretch of road alongside the Sun Life stadium. Considering he was the quarterback, I think Dan Marino Pass would have been a more appropriate name.

The Don Shula Expressway (Florida SR 874) was named for the coach of the Miami Dolphins. We like our football in Florida.

My post about streets named for a couple of racing drivers...

national highway 1

NY 9A West Side Hwy in Manhattan, renamed the Joe DiMaggio Hwy.

Groups of peoples wants to see A-50 (who'll link Gatineau to A-15) Autoroute Maurice-Richard as a tribute to the former NHL hockey player Maurice Richard.

I believe I-70 in St. Louis is the Mark McGwire Freeway.

It was for awhile up until last year. After he admitted his steroid use last year, the Missouri Legislature returned it to its original name of the Mark Twain Freeway.

corco

Safeco Field in Seattle is located along Edgar Martinez Dr (one block of Atlantic St), with the adjacent street (one block of 1st Ave) about to be renamed after broadcaster Dave Niehaus

A couple of others:
I-70 in Kansas City is the George Brett Superhighway.
US 34/281 in Nebraska from Grand Island to Hastings is the Tom Osborne Expressway.

Briefly venturing into the realm of roadgeek trivia, is it safe to say that McGwire is the only "de-interstated" sports figure in American road history?

By coincidence, a part of NW 107 Avenue in western Miami (known as Sweetwater) was renamed for local baseball player Jose Conseco, but it may also be removed. Both played together for the A's, ironically.

Strictly speaking, depending on what part, it's West Street, 11th Avenue, or 12th Avenue (and then the Henry Hudson Parkway). "West Side Highway" is a colloquialism formerly applied to the old Miller Elevated Highway, now applied to its surface boulevard replacement - though it has sunk in enough to appear on some signs. And it was never renamed the "Joe DiMaggio Highway", that name was a secondary name slapped on top of the existing names (and, thankfully, few signs mention it). Kinda like how 6th Avenue is also "Avenue of the Americas".

And the Gil Hodges Marine Parkway Bridge. But nobody uses any of these names. :)

Before Shea Stadium was torn down, there was a Casey Stengel Plaza there.
If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

I-70 Saint Louis Steriods Way errrrrrrrrr Mark McGuire Highway.

Hank Aaron Drive is the southern end of Capitol Avenue and Piedmont Ave./Rd. in Atlanta. It runs on the eastside of Turner Field.

Check out my YouTube page (http://youtube.com/Bryant5493). I have numerous road videos of Metro Atlanta and other areas in the Southeast.

I just signed up on photobucket -- here's my page (http://s594.photobucket.com/albums/tt24/Bryant5493).

LA 3132 in Shreveport was known as the Inner-Loop expressway.  Now it is called the Terry Bradshaw Passway.  :spin:  Is "passway" even an official highway term? :hmmm:
Runnin' roads and polishin' rails.
