Interstate 22?
Nope, you're a little (read: a lot) off, try again.
Interstate 99?
Mon-Fayette Expressway?
clearly this is Million Dollar Highway - US-550 in Colorado
NE2 is closest, but no cigar yet.
Really? Interstate 98, then.
Is this road even open to traffic? If so, pretty gutsy to park over both lanes like that?
I'll guess it's a not-yet-open-to-traffic stretch of Corridor H in WV.
Probably parked in front of a freeway stub...like the one on the US 219 freeway in PA (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=altoona,+pa&hl=en&ll=40.553526,-78.718758&spn=0,0.136986&sll=40.024854,-78.502207&sspn=0.04121,0.136986&t=h&z=14&layer=c&cbll=40.553464,-78.718816&panoid=4tlK0__KNDiXAAZmA5f62g&cbp=12,225.96,,0,-0.9).
Alex won. It is in fact the northern stub of 219.
Off topic, but looking at freeway section of US 219, both of it's ends have stubs. It's like it's own little lone section of freeway-it doesn't even have an interchange with I-70/I-76(Penna Turnpike) What was the original plan for this freeway? You can PM me if so the thread doesn't go off topic.
okay guys, name this spot

no, Mars is the red planet. this is the blue planet. hint: one planet further in towards the sun.

Neptune?

Is it Uranus?
Big Matt is closest. It's Nebraska.

Mexico?
Mexico doesn't have signs like that. I'd guess either Brasilia or somewhere in Eastern Europe

Mexico?
No, signage looks too nice and neat. I'm guessing somewhere in western Europe. Spain or Portugal from the trees.
I see a red flag.. Not sure if it's national or just, you know.. A random flag flyin'..?
BigMatt
Santiago possibly?
Possibly in Turkey?
I see "build own", which makes this in a country that has English as one of its main languages. I also see mixture of green and blue signs, which is very European. Given right-hand drive, and given a short list of English speaking countries, my pick is Belize.
Nope, no such roundabouts in Belize. Somewhere in the Caribbean, then.
I sincerely doubt it is in the Caribbean. I've been to some of those places, and the ones that could have them looking like this (Grand Cayman) don't. I've been to Belize. It definitely is not Belize. It's a place where they drive on the right side of the road (rules out most former British colonies).
That there's a bit of English in the photo tells us nothing. Bits of English show up all over the world in advertising and whatnot, even in countries that don't speak it.
I'm thinking it's somewhere in Guanghzhou/Shenzen.
Blue signs, red flag, palm trees, cars on the right, weird mix of wealth and poverty, potential isolated English signage, roundabouts, a decent number of sedans (sedans are popular in China as they are here. Much of the rest of the world prefers hatchbacks), the park is brand new. Billboard aside, that screams southern China.
China uses blue signs?
then again, the only signs I've seen were from the Beijing area, so it may be a lot less homogeneous than I imagine.
I think they use a mix- I'm not sure what gets when why, but there are definitely blue navigation signs
I don't think it's in China -- the signs appear to be in English-alphabet letters.
Looks too warm to be Switzerland, which would fit the flag and sign colours.
I'm going with Albania, just to be different.
I'd go with Turkey. The billboard seems to be advertising holiday houses (. . . evin in Turkish).
I'm going to guess that it's in Adana, Turkey, just across the river from the Sabanci Central Mosque, and that he probably took the picture from somewhere up on the mosque given the angle looking down at the roundabout.
If that's not correct, I don't know what could possibly be
I'd say it looks Argentina.

you have to identify the specific window of the mosque out of which the photo was taken, and what color the photographer's eyes are. :sombrero:

For the first pic (1995hoo) I want to say somewhere on the Pacific Northwest, but not 100% certain. As for Brandon's there's a British Flag flying, which makes me think that it could be Florida but at the same time might be something int he Carribean.

yellow license plates imply Alaska to me. Juneau?
1995hoo: Juneau, Alaska?
Brandon: British Virgin Islands or the Cayman Islands (both British territories to this day)?
On the right track, but not Juneau.
in the tropical photo, there is a triangle sign on the left side, implying left-hand drive, and European traffic standards. British Virgin Islands? or, hell, US Virgin Islands would be the more interesting choice, as it is the only place in the United States with left-hand traffic. (dunno what MUTCD they use, though.)

I'm quite sure it's not Hyder, as I had been there and do not remember a tunnel. Sitka? that's just a wild guess; I do not know where such a tunnel would be.
I wonder if the houses buillt directly above the tunnel were built b4 or after the tunnel was dug :hmmm: :pan:

I also thought the building at the bottom of the cliff (not very visible in the picture) was interesting because it almost had to have been built after the tunnel, as the tunnel would limit how far back you could excavate.
Skagway?
Ketchikan?
Quote from: ftballfan on August 18, 2011, 10:13:49 PM
Ketchikan?
You are correct. Here is a Google Maps link showing the spot; I centered the map at roughly the spot where I took the picture. (http://maps.google.com/?ll=55.343375,-131.650414&spn=0.002328,0.008256&vpsrc=0&z=18) That large hill sits just north of downtown Ketchikan and Water Street goes one-way through the tunnel going northwest and one-way around the hill going southeast. After I saw the query yesterday about which came first, the houses or the tunnel, I did a Google search for "Ketchikan tunnel" and I learned that apparently the houses on top of the hill came first and that for years people simply used stairs to walk past that point. It seems the southbound road (the part that doesn't go through the tunnel) is actually built out over the water. When the tunnel was built, the people living in those houses had to move to temporary residences until the engineers could be certain their houses wouldn't collapse due to the construction.
Here is a view looking the other way from downtown. I didn't use this one as the original "name that spot" image for two reasons–(1) I think the other one showing the road splitting with the one-way tunnel was more unique and (2) I thought this picture might make it too easy to figure out where it is due to the name of the street and the store with the "Inside Passage" sign. In this view you can really see the houses built on top of where the tunnel is, though.

Which is kinda why I was a little surprised it took as long as it did for someone to get it. I kind of figured forum member Oscar has probably been there and would guess correctly if he looks at this thread. I know forum member Jim has been through there on the Marine Highway, but I don't think he made it to the tunnel before he had to get back on board the ferry.

It's funny, in the original reduced-size image I uploaded I find it hard to tell that the license plates are yellow, although when I load the larger original on my PC it's clear. The original image is 3504 x 2336 and obviously I scale them down for uploading. Another forum I visit restricts images to 800 x 600, so I generally format uploads to be no larger than that simply to avoid having to think about the issue.

no idea, but my guess is Louisiana.
My first thought was the Glover Cary bridge in Owensboro, KY, but I don't think it has Jersey barriers on the sides.
I'm thinking Louisiana, too. This looks very similar to the bridge on US 90 at the MS-LA state line crossing over the Pearl River - except I know it's not the same bridge. Everything else looks about the same, though.

Looks a lot like some of the stretches on the Northway (I-87) north of Lake George to me, but there's not much to go on in this one.
The Northway is where I thought of as well, but I couldn't opine as to where. I've never seen that road without snow, either!
To me it looked like one of the southern New York parkways. Palisades may be?
Find this one, if you can...

I-35 in Minnesota? Complete guess.

definitely not a parkway, too wide. if in NY only possiblity could be I-90/thruway between albany and syracuse.

Hmm. So we know it's not the Mountain Parkway, Cumberland Gap Parkway, or Bluegrass Parkway. I'm guessing it has to be in the eastern part of the state due to the terrain, but it can't be the Hal Rogers Parkway because that's almost exclusively a two-lane road and the picture plainly shows a four-lane dual-carriageway. It also looks like it's reasonably recent construction. Is it the Louie Nunn Parkway (also called the Cumberland Parkway)?
nope
Since this is a Kentucky parkway, I should know it. Given the other guesses that have been rejected, I am going to say it's the Natcher (Green River) Parkway, somewhere between I-65 and the WK Parkway, probably near Morgantown.
ok I'm gonna go ahead and say ya'll are close enough haha. Its western kentucky pkwy.
Where on the WK? I thought the median looked a bit too wide for the WK.
