Title: Weird road signs contest: Which one is wackiest?
Post by: tchafe1978 on September 02, 2012, 05:27:11 PM
I saw this on msn.com today. Thought it was kinds of fun, even though not all are road signs. Also made me wonder if anybody here has seen anything wackier?

This one's probably shopped:
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fm.static.newsvine.com%2Fservista%2Fimagesizer%3Ffile%3DalolsonA90B74B1-4418-A4E6-4B1C-4EE109F6080A.jpg%26amp%3Bwidth%3D500&hash=2c45a86c7ee30f6c4fd7f9d2344f82c851435297)

Incidentally, their editor sucks:
"We never knew it was so dangerous driving around Taos, New Mexico.  If a cow lands on the car, though, do we get to keep the wool?"
"Also, Sign No. 10 warns of a cow falling, not a sheep."

Yeah, I noticed that too. Even at the bottom of the article, it has a couple of corrections, which still aren't correct. Still a fun article, though.

I think my favorite weird 'official' sign is this one:

"CAUTION" sign... http://goo.gl/maps/omLxB

Caution WHAT?! lol. There's nothing around here I feel like I should be cautious about besides other drivers, but that's a given just about anywhere. This sign has to be a remnant of something before and has been forgotten about.

In a random neighborhood there was a sign that read "DEAF CHILD"... Okay I understand the meaning behind this one, but it sounds scary. There are better alternate versions nowadays (Deaf Child Area, SLOW Deaf Child, etc). I remember this sign being just a little bit on the rusty side too, again probably forgotten about but left up because it makes people slow down.

colinstu, they must have been taking a lesson from Massachusetts. Those plain "CAUTION" signs are everywhere, along with such exceedingly helpful ones as:

"CHILDREN"

"DEAF SLOW PERSON"

and possibly my favorite... "BAD INTERSECTION" (dangerous intersection is a standard Mass sign, but I've only seen bad once, in Lowell).

I think my favorite weird 'official' sign is this one:

["this is not highway 89"]

is that in Vermont?  because if so, that would be referring to interstate 89.

I know of a 12 similar to it in Vermont, and it is in a location where it is indeed useful, as 12 takes a turn, and a residential street of similar quality continues forward.

Judging by the landscape, the 89 sign looks to be much farther southwest.

My brother took this picture during a trip to Hawaii:

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi31.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fc378%2F1995hoo%2FRoad%2520sign%2520pictures%2Fd282dc50.jpg&hash=1c5f75913b79edf61ba8d4e3d7d1bec2174e7145)

I spotted this on a street in my neighborhood a few months ago. Don't know if it's still there since I seldom use that street. I have no idea where they got this sign or who posted it.

Caution WHAT?!

In Madison County, OH there's a county road with a few signs that say "DRIVE WITH CARE" (in Series B with lots of interletter spacing, in true Madison County style) and advisory speed plaques of something like 40 MPH.  (GSV apparently never made it down that road.)  No, I'm not going to stick to your non-binding advisory speed unless you give me a specific reason to slow down.  The road is, as far as I can tell, just about as safe as any other county road in the area.

There's a "this is not US 89" sign on UT 143 south of Panguitch, Utah: http://www.flickr.com/photos/therealkurumi/4424332432/

The sign NE2 posted is different, but the topography would not be out of place along US 89.

More likely, just forgotten.  These types of signs do little to nothing in the way of actually affecting traffic speed.

The one NE2 posted seems unlikely to be anywhere on the East Coast because of (a) the topography (recognizing that thing in the background COULD be a landfill, I guess) and (b) the wording–I can't say I've heard many people on the East Coast say "Highway XX" as opposed to "Route XX" or just plain "XX."

Oregon should put some signs along I-84 warning about invisible trucks.

On Colorado 14 in Poudre Canyon. I guess that you have plenty of time to read all that when your road isn't plowed.

Deep in Wyoming on I-80. Yeah, the sign makes sense, but still fun to figure out at 85 75 mph (don't speed there y'all!). And the mountain graphic is spiffy!

It's a "request." I interpret that as a "should" but not a "shall."

^^ Is "requested" enforceable? I wonder about the enforceability of such suggestions or advice, like the section of U.S. 101 through the redwoods parks where trucks over a specified length are "not advised".

I would assume (though this is just a guess) that phrasing like "not advised" is more of a disclaimer than anything else--we're not gonna stop you, but don't go blaming us if something goes wrong.

I actually know the guy who laid out the San Francisco bike route system.  he works for the city.  I emailed him; he will either clarify for me why that is okay, or have it corrected.

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;attach=1078;type=avatar)(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;attach=1080;type=avatar)(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;attach=1081;type=avatar)
Not that they are offensive in any way, but the are indeed wacky.  ;-)
Mine is even wacky without the rainbow ;)

Prudes.

I thought the same thing.  You know that this sign is now probably hanging in some frat-boys bed room

of the ones I've seen, I like this one the best:

but I don't see many avatars because I read the forum mostly in "most recent posts" view mode.

I think I saw a rainbow-backed Michigan state route avatar in another thread a few minutes ago.  It seems every couple of days or so I see a new one.

Here's what highway shields should look like.

That would be me. A few seconds ago in the erroneous signs thread, I saw a Florida toll road avatar where there was a rainbow behind "TOLL". How come we've been jumping into the rainbow avatar trend?

To run amok is an Indonesian term - it describes the madness, anger and unpredictability of a lynch mob.

While certainly there are certainly those kind of thuggish elements on both sides of this debate, none of them are (AFAICS) on this forum - what we have here is people celebrating diversity by sheep-like saying "I conform": having multicoloured avatars is the shibboleth to say "I'm like you, don't think down on me". In mainstream politics, this debate is simply a way of displaying your virtue (see Dan Hannan MEP summing up the current British debate brilliantly (http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/danielhannan/100142646/the-gay-marriage-debate-is-primarily-a-way-to-advertise-your-values/)) - with each side valuing different things as virtuous.

PS it's not a rainbow unless it arcs like a bow - what we have here on avatars are multicoloured stripes, or spectrums/spectra (not sure what's the right plural)

Florida here!

It took me a few days to figure out what the hell was going on with all the rainbow avatars until I came across the thread about the multicolored crosswalk in West Hollywood. Granted, members showing their support for LGBT causes by displaying their favorite road shield or other road-related image with a rainbow element in it may cause some division on this forum, but this forum is primarily about roads and transportation, not politics - unless of course those politics are transportation-related.

However, being a gay man myself and subjected to harassment in years past and subjected to discrimination back then and now, it amazes me when I see such an outpouring of support and acceptance from complete strangers. Even if most people in the Deep South support and accept LGBT people, it is definitely not spoken of. Seeing such support from people I don't even know on this forum was a complete 180 from what I was used to, and I decided to change my own avatar to support the cause as well to show my gratitude and support for what they are doing.

But in the end, we're all just here to talk about roads, so let's get on, shall we?

I only used 5 filters...when I did that design in 2006.
(though, yes whenever I get a new toy (re: filter, shapefile, design, action, etc) I do feel the need to use them immediately in whichever graphic design project I'm doing at that time).
