Title: One-county state highways
Post by: golden eagle on November 24, 2012, 12:42:43 AM
We have a few of these in MS:

MS 463 is entirely in Madison County
MS 468 and 471 are only in Rankin County
MS 467 runs through Hinds County from Edwards to Raymond
MS 67 runs from Biloxi to US 49 at Saucier, all in Harrison County
MS 603 & 604 run only through Hancock County

I'm sure they're very common if you really look into a lot of them. Off the top of my head I know there's PA 946 and 512 in Northampton County, PA, which is relatively small at 377 sq miles. There's also PA 222 in Allentown (Lehigh County) which was to be a part of US 222 that got denied, so there are probably a lot of intra-county state routes in multiple counties that exist for the same or at least similar reason, for example NJ 495

Offhand I can think of a few Texas examples... severely incomplete list follows:
Not sure whether most of these are in the more urban areas or if those are just the examples that came to my mind more readily. There are a few in relatively less populated areas, i.e., SH 51 in Hansford Co., but as expected many seem to connect two county seats.

Oh, of course, can't forget SH 165 in Travis Co. :)

Most of the business loops and spurs in the state are single-county highways as well. The Michigan segment of US 8 exists in only one county, and the southern segment of US 141 is also a single-county affair.

Similarly, you'll find a lot of Nevada state routes that do not cross county lines. Given the large size of many Nevada counties (larger than some whole New England states) this isn't overly surprising. It would take some time to compile a list...might be easier to list routes that *do* cross county lines...

Every state highway in Hawaii is one-county.

Only a few of Alaska's dozen numbered state highways (1-11, and 98), leaving aside hundreds of routes with nothing more than unsigned inventory numbers:

9 (Kenai Peninsula borough)

98 (Skagway borough)

5 (Southeast Fairbanks census area within the Unorganized Borough, which is the large part of Alaska not yet assigned to any county-level local government)

10 (Valdez-Cordova census area within the Unorganized Borough).

4 is entirely within the Unorganized Borough, but starts in the Valdez-Cordova census area and ends in the Southeast Fairbanks census area.

Since the thread is about State Highways, I'll also include IN-520 and Iowa Highways 100, unsigned 461, 922, 965, and all of the other little spurs that were decommissioned in 2003.

Oklahoma has quite a few of them. Most of the lettered highways are short spurs to a town just off the main route, so those will tend to be in one county. Even the non-suffixed routes will sometimes be all in one county, though. Examples are OK 130 (McClain), OK 135 (unsigned, Tulsa), OK 145 (Garvin), OK 153 (Love), OK 209 (Choctaw, I think). There are even some lower numbered ones–OK 24 (McClain, although a few miles of the southbound/eastbound lane are in Garvin), OK 42 (Washita), OK 96 (Love).

I can think of a zillion ones off the top of my head.  A couple notable ones:
-NY 421 is entirely in St. Lawrence county, but to reach it by car, you have to drive through Franklin county
-NY 272 is entirely in Monroe county northbound and Orleans county southbound.  It's possible to clinch this road without entering one of the counties it travels through.

We have a few of these on Long Island, NY also: NY State Routes 110, 111 and 112 and 114 are entirely in Suffolk County. Nassau County has 106, 107, 101, and probably some more that I'm forgetting. I guess the geography of Long Island plays a large role here. Many North/South routes are in one county because the counties cover from the North Shore to the South Shore.

Mass. Route 4 in Middlesex County.

This does not matter much in New England though, as many counties have no government--MA has 14 counties and 8 of them have no government--and there are ZERO county routes in the 6 states.

Ok, I'll do Connecticut.  Numbers with an asterisk are highways that continue into another state (in the case of 138, 2 states)

Fairfield: 25, 33, 35*, 37, 39, 53, 55*, 57, 58, 59, 102, 104, 106, 107, 108, 110, 111, 113, 116*, 123*, 124, 127, 130, 135, 136, 137*, 302

New Haven: 22, 40, 42, 68, 70, 77, 100, 103, 114, 115, 121, 122, 139, 142, 146, 150, 152, 162, 172, 188, 243, 313, 334, 337

Hartford: 71A, 75*, 120, 159*, 160, 167, 168*, 173, 174, 175, 176, 177, 178, 185, 187*, 189*, 191, 192*, 194, 218, 220*, 229, 287, 305, 309, 314, 315, 364

Middlesex: 81, 145, 147, 151, 153, 154, 155, 157, 166, 196, 217

Tolland:19*, 31, 186*, 275, 286, 316, 319, 320

New London: 11 27, 78*, 117, 138*, 161, 163, 164, 165*, 184, 201, 213, 214, 215, 216*, 234, 349, 354

Also: I-684 skirts Fairfield County, I-291 is entirely within Hartford County, and one side of NY Route 120A is in Greenwich in Fairfield County.

Minnesota has quite a few in the Cities area from what I can recall.
At one time (before 1980s) that would have been accurate. With turnbacks of trunk highways that were mostly city streets, there are only a few in the Twin Cities area.
100 (Hennepin)
121 (the short ramp from I-35W to Lyndale at the 62 interchange - Hennepin)
243 (Washington)
244 (Washington)
97 (Washington)
280 (Ramsey)
62 (Hennepin)
110 (Dakota)
252 (Hennepin
51 (Ramsey)
50 (Dakota)

My "only a few" list grew as I actually looked at a map. Outstate you would have the remaining 2xx and 3xx routes that were established to serve state facilities. If I had to guess the longest single-county route in Minnesota I would probably look for a large county by area like St. Louis and speculate it may be MN-169.

Maryland has tons and tons of them.  I'm pretty sure I can come up with at least fifteen or twenty in Montgomery County alone.

Many small state highways in Montgomery County  were decommissioned in the late 1990's in exchange for SHA taking-over what is now Md. 119, the Great Seneca Highway.

Here are some (several "little" ones omitted):

Highway 30 is the only one I can think of off hand for Wisconsin. Minnesota has quite a few in the Cities area from what I can recall.

Both WI 15 and WI 125 are entirely in Outagamie County.

Also, WI 119, WI 241 and WI 341 are entirely in Milwaukee County.

WI 105 is entirely in Douglas County.

WI 172 is entirely in Brown County.

These are just a few.

--------------

One that Big John missed - WI 180 is entirely in Marinette County.

I was thinking that WI 110 was entirely in Waupaca County, but then I remembered that its northernmost couple of blocks are in Shawano County.

How many state routes are entirely within Cherry Co, NE?

Being it is mostly ranch land in Cherry County, the only state highways which exist solely in Cherry County are S-16A, S-16B, and S-16F.

As for Nebraska in general, most of the spurs and links are in one county.  As for numbered highways, the only ones I can think of offhand are  1 (Cass County), 110 (Dakota County) and 370 (Sarpy County).  Some of the highways split into multiple parts have parts entirely in one county (the far eastern part of 66 is entirely in Cass County), but the highway as a whole is not.

In northwestern Montana:  Montana 40 (Whitefish-Columbia Falls) and 82 (Somers-Bigfork) are both primary state highways in Flathead County.  If you include the secondary highways, there are quite a few more - but my experience was that few people referred to the secondary route numbers (i.e. Secondary Highway 503 for Foys Lake Road, which both starts and ends in southwestern Kalispell but loops around Foys Lake outside of the city).

Utah has quite a few because
(1) Some counties in Utah are larger than some eastern states, and
(2) How some state route numbering schemes work (the 281-299 and 300-series that serve state parks). Those routes seem to be gradually phased out, and it's probably more rare to see a 300-series route cross a county line. Also, you have the relative shortness of routes is also a factor. I'll keep the shorter 281-300-series off these lists.

That said, here are a few off the top of my head (italicized routes are decommissioned, starred routes are at least part of an Interstate Business Route):

Washington County

We have a few of these on Long Island, NY also: NY State Routes 110, 111 and 112 and 114 are entirely in Suffolk County. Nassau County has 106, 107, 101, and probably some more that I'm forgetting. I guess the geography of Long Island plays a large role here. Many North/South routes are in one county because the counties cover from the North Shore to the South Shore.

Suffolk also has 108, 231, 347 and 454. Nassau also has 102, 105 and 135.

Not gonna bother figuring out a bunch of PA ones right now, but I'll throw out PA-60.  It used to be a fairly long, 4 county route (Allegheny, Beaver, Lawrence, Mercer), but with the extension of I-376, it has been shortened to a fairly short one county route.

I-238????

To get technical, NY considers all routes state routes.  Interstates are ##I and US routes are ##U.  This means I can include the following:

If I wanted to get even more technical, I could include Reference Routes too.

As said before, Florida probably has more single-county state routes than multi-county SRs; especially the three-digit routes. 2diSRs (is that a term?) are rarely single-county, by comparison.

The other 3xx routes in Accomack Co are VA 335 west of Painter and VA 389 near Melfa.   Norfolk also has VA 403
For some reason I thought 403's north end was in Virginia Beach. The terrible signage there is something Virginia Beach is especially prone to doing (not that Norfolk isn't). So Accomack has 11 active, which I believe is the most in the state.

Interestingly, 234 Business traverses multiple jurisdictions, entering Manassas.

Norfolk has eight (including an interstate): VA 170, VA 192, VA 194, VA 247, VA 404, VA 405, VA 406, and I-564. Accomack County on the Eastern Shore has at least nine: VA 126, VA 175, VA 176, VA 179, VA 180, VA 181, VA 182, VA 187, VA 316, and I think another 3xx.

The other 3xx routes in Accomack Co are VA 335 west of Painter and VA 389 near Melfa.   Norfolk also has VA 403

Virginia has a bunch of these (crossing an independent city line counts as crossing a county line in this list): 4, 9, 26, 27, 34, 37, 38, 54, 59, 62, 68, 69, 73, 78, 79, 82, 84, 86, 87, 90, 93, 96, 97, 98, 101, 103, 109, 110, 111, 112, 113, 119, 120, 121, 124, 125, 126, 127, 128, 129, 131, 133, 136, 140, 141, 145, 146, 148, 149, 154, 157, 158, 159, 160, 162, 170, 175, 176, 179, 180, 181, 182, 183, 184, 185, 186, 187, 188, 191, 192, 193, 194, 195, 196, 204, 206, 207, 209, 210, 212, 213, 214, 216, 217, us219, 222, 223, 224, 225, 226, 227, 228, 229, 233, 234, 235, 239, 240, 242, 243, 245, 246, 247, 249, 255, 256, 257, 261, 263, 269, 270, 272, 273, 274, 278, 279, 280, 283, 285, 286, 287, 289, 290, 292, 293, 296, 298, 299; all numbers 300-399 except us301, 307, 311, 321, 331, 337, 338, us340, 345, 351, va360, us360, 361, 369; 400, 401, 403, 404, 405, 406, 409, 412, 413, 415, 420, 598

Windham County, CT:  14*, 14A, 21, 101*, 193*, 198*, 200, 203, 205, 244

My copy and paste missed that line.  Thanks.

More I can think of offhand:

WI 15
WI 24
WI 68
WI 74
WI 79
WI 105
WI 111
WI 117
WI 119
WI 122
WI 123
WI 124
WI 125
WI 126
WI 127
WI 129
WI 147
WI 152
WI 155
WI 157
WI 158
WI 159
WI 165
WI 172
WI 186
WI 193
WI 241 (southern terminus in question though)
WI 243
WI 310
WI 341 (unmarked)
WI 794
I-794
I-894
Technically, WI 241 does go just barely into Racine County by 1/4 mile when it ends at I-94.

Another one I can think of is WI 116, entirely in Winnebago County.

How many state routes are entirely within Cherry Co, NE?

Five: R16C, R16D, S16A, S16B, S16F

No mainline routes, just two recreation routes and three spur routes.

I always forget about the recreation roads in Nebraska, probably because they are not in the official state log.  They almost shouldn't count, since they are only in state parks and I don't offhand know of any which might be in two counties (perhaps Indian Cave State Park, the spur road for which straddles the Nemaha-Richardson County border).

Not true.  All but two US routes have no suffix, since NY avoids duplicating them.  US 2 (entirely in Clinton County in the village of Rouses Point) is 2U, US 15 is 99I (really), and the others are just themselves.

Cuyahoga County (Cleveland), OH:

Street names the route travels along are in parenthesis:

SR-17 (Brookpark/Granger/Libby)
SR-175 (East 260th/Richmond)
SR-291 (Henry Ford Bl./Engle)

and my personal favorite with 9 name changes within it's 14-mile alignment:

SR-237 (W. Clifton/Riverside/Rocky River/Berea Freeway/Front/W. Bagley/Mulberry/Henry/Prospect).

And then there's I-490 ;)

Without going through what (for New Mexico especially) would be an excruciating process, I can identify the longest single-county routes:

New Mexico: NM-12 (74 miles, Catron County)
Colorado: CO-318 (62 miles, Moffat County)

To get technical, NY considers all routes state routes.  Interstates are ##I and US routes are ##U.
Not true.  All but two US routes have no suffix, since NY avoids duplicating them.  US 2 (entirely in Clinton County in the village of Rouses Point) is 2U, US 15 is 99I (really), and the others are just themselves.

Now that I think about it, you're right.  I was thinking about Reference Markers on US 15 that have 15U on them.  My closest US route is US 20, and I'm normally on the US 20/NY 5 duplex, which has Reference Markers for NY 5, so I don't see US 20 Reference Markers that often.

As for 99I Reference Markers, I thought someone posted a picture on the forum, but I can't find it.  I did find a post of mine from 2011 where I mentioned seeing one back in 2008 (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=4077.msg89333#msg89333).

Ha! I had actually thought of that one, but was too lazy at the time to bother looking it up.  Of course, there are a bazillion secondary state routes in Missouri that don't cross county lines.....  Has anyone mentioned MO-376 yet?

Another Greene County one–MO 360, which is the portion of the James River Freeway that is not US 60.

Arizona 64, 108 miles. Although the only potential kink in that is does the highway "officially" still run inside the Grand Canyon National Park? Or does it "end" at each park entrance?

Also, when it comes to Arizona highways, IIRC Arizona 989 is less than one mile long, nor is it signed in ANY way. Basically it was designated a State Highway so that a large bridge could be built on the State's dime, not the local municipality.

It's maintained by NPS but ADOT does still consider it a part of the  state highway system and mileposts it as such, per the 2007 SHS Log

New York has a ton of single-county state routes.  Long Island has already been covered here, so I'll cover some of the other counties in the area.

Richmond: NY 440 (although it becomes a New Jersey route)
Bronx: I-695, I-895
Westchester: NY 35, NY 100, NY 100A, NY 100B, NY 100C, NY 116, NY 117, NY 119, NY 120, NY 120A (well sort of, since it goes into Connecticut), NY 123, NY 124, NY 125, NY 127, NY 128, NY 129, NY 132, NY 133, NY 134, NY 137, NY 138, NY 139, NY 141, NY 172, NY 433, NY 448

Southern MN 101 ends at the Scott county line; there's a gap where southern 101 was a continuous route between the 212 freeway and MN 5, which is now Carver county 101. Now, the "middle segment" begins at MN 5 and ends before it curves and becomes Townline Road, so there's no cheating by saying the southbound lanes travel through Hennepin county for a while before it ends. Thus, two out of the three MN 101's are completely intracounty, within the same county (Carver County).

Idaho does not have a lot of state highways, but many of those are contained in one county.

SH-4 - Shoshone
SH-5 - Benewah
SH-7 - Clearwater
SH-9 - Latah
SH-13 - Idaho
SH-14 - Idaho
SH-29 - Lemhi
SH-37 - Power
SH-38 - Oneida
SH-40 - Bannock
SH-43 - Bonneville
SH-47 - Fremont
SH-53 - Kootenai
SH-54 - Kootenai
SH-57 - Bonner
SH-58 - Kootenai
SH-60 - Benewah
SH-61 - Bear Lake
SH-62 - Lewis
SH-64 - Lewis (3 miles of route is gravel, hugging the side of a mountain, barely one lane, no guardrails)
SH-66 - Latah
SH-69 - Ada
SH-72 - Payette
SH-74 - Twin Falls
SH-77 - Cassia
SH-79 - Jerome
SH-87 - Fremont
SH-97 - Harrison
SH-99 - Latah
SH-128 - Nez Perce
SH-200 - Bonner

Probably would have been easier to list the routes that entered more than one county, but where is the fun in that.
