According to the calendar then in use, George Washington was born on February 11, 1731. The holiday now observed as Washington's Birthday therefore can never occur on either of the actual dates for his birthday (February 11 Old Style or February 22 New Style) because the third Monday in February can be no earlier than February 15 and no later than February 21.

Left-handed pitchers can never throw the ball on a straight line.  It has something to do with the way a right arm throws a ball vs. the way a left arm throws a ball (Kinesiology).

A properly shuffled deck of cards (considered 7 correct shuffles) is very likely unique in history.

The possible number of permutations of a 52 card deck = 80658175170943878571660636856403766975289505440883277824000000000000

This number is 52!, the factorial of 52. This is 52*51*50*49, etc... until multiplied by 1.

Despite British loathing of the term, 'Soccer' the term was invented in British public schools* (which are the more-exclusive private schools, so a little misleading!), shortening 'Association Football' to 'soc' and adding an 'er' at the end. This was to distinguish it from 'Rugby Football', which was shortened to 'rug' and thus referred to as Rugger

*either Eton or Harrow, can't remember which.

On the other hand, exactly eight perfect shuffles will restore the deck to its original state. So perfect shuffles are not desirable.

This is probably why a casino dealer will only do four attempts at a perfect shuffle, with a shitty shuffle* thrown in after the third one to mix things up more.

*It's actually a strip shuffle, where you basically just cut the deck into about six blocks of cards and reverse their order. Contrasted to the riffle shuffle most people are familiar with.

The Three Stooges made 97 shorts under the Columbia Pictures banner with Jerry (Curly) Howard.

After Curly was forced to retire in 1947, an additional 74 shorts were made with Shemp Howard.

After Shemp died, an additional 16 were made with "Curly-Joe" Besser.

Then Columbia fired the Three Stooges in 1959, though they continued to work for over 10 years after their run at Columbia was over.

In just about every casino in the US, the white chips are worth $1, reds are $5s, greens are $25s, blacks are $100s, and purples are $500s. Above that things get kind of murky but orange for $1000 is somewhat common. Often there is a yellow 50¢ chip as well.

Despite the term "blue chip stocks", there is no longer a standard value for a blue chip. Some casinos use it for internal accounting. For example, at the casino that I work at, the blue chip (actually more turquoise than anything) is worth $2, and is solely used for collecting the rake from poker games (the dealer colors up two white chips to a blue and then drops the total rake in the drop box). If you somehow end up with a blue chip the cage staff may not cash it, and it will become a matter of internal investigation as to how you managed to get it in the first place.

In the USA, unleaded solder is *prohibited* from use in military equipment, aircraft avionics, NASA equipment and medical equipment electronics due to the problem of 'tin whisker' formation - a major problem in consumer electronics manufactured within the last decade or two due to lead solder no longer being allowed in some parts of the World (most specifically in the European Union).  Metal whisker formation is a process that is still not fully understood and the lead prevents the process from occurring.

In fact, early rechargeable lithium batteries were so notorious for metal whiskers forming and shorting them out - with often explosive consequences in laptop computers and so forth - that they were prohibited from use and shipment in airliners.

They are also the major cause of failure in nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries.

The original name of the rock group Chicago was The Big Thing. They changed their name to Chicago Transit Authority and released one album, which was self-titled, but after the CTA threatened to sue, they changed their name again to just Chicago and released another self-titled album, which is now commonly called Chicago II.

The suite "Ballet For A Girl in Buchannon" on the Chicago II album was written by trombonist James Pankow about a former girlfriend from Buckhannon, WV, but the city's name is misspelled. (Hence the instrumental "West Virginia Fantasies" in the suite).

(I have some footage of US 33, Corridor H, running from Elkins to Weston, that I want to do a video of, and have the accompanying music be "Ballet For A Girl in Buchannon," minus "Colour My World," the inclusion of which would ruin the mood.)

Stop perpetuating the clowns' lie that big feet = big penis: if we give it airtime, more mums will believe it and pay these sadistic creeps to spend time with their children just so they can get close the supposedly massive man meat! Think of the CHILDRUUUN!

Speaking of which: Coulrophobia, outside of actual properly phobic reactions to clowns (panic attacks, an inability to be near them, etc), is a perfectly natural reaction to the unchanging smile on a clown's face (for it is that what is scary). And their sadism, of course!

I've only found two clowns funny: this chap (played by that guy) (http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120815195527/batman/images/4/49/MyCard_The_Joker.jpg) : crazy evil and openly blatant about it and Mr Jelly (http://www.jellyparties.co.uk/), who is as depressing as he feels depressed. Both have some sort of integrity of emotions (and the dark tones of the fictional works they were in helped a lot).

Another rule of thumb about body measurements:  your height at age 2 is half your eventual adult height, while your height at age 3 is either 60% or 55% of your adult height (depending on whether you are a boy or girl).

The length of your foot is said to be equal to the distance between your wrist and your elbow.

I just held my feet up against my arms while sitting on the couch and found this to be untrue (although I'm sure the "is said" part may have some truth).

Actually, it isn't true for me, either. But I thought perhaps my discrepancy could be explained by my birth defect and that it might be true for others. I don't remember where I read that but I guess it seemed legitimate and it was the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw this thread. Anyway, I think it's cool that you were curious enough to investigate it for yourself.

I tried my damnedest to take a picture but just couldn't contort myself that far and I don't want to ask my wife to do it for me!

All banana trees that are currently used to grow fruit for popular consumption are genetically identical, essentially clones of each other.  The only way that they reproduce is through cuttings.

There are other minor varieties and growers are starting to trend towards them, but the far and away most common, familiar variety are all clones of each other.  The problem is that while when that variety was developed several decades ago and at that time was immune to all known pathogens, one has emerged.  This has happened before - that variety was developed then because the previous common variety was nearly wiped out by a pathogen.

No it doesn't. Transfinites are "larger" infinities. Infinity divided by infinity is indeterminate because infinity is usually defined as shorthand for a limit, and it depends how one approaches that limit. The 2x variant of infinity divided by the x variant of infinity is 2. The aleph-null variant divided by any countable variant is infinity. I'm probably mixing metaphors here and don't care to work it all out.

Parris was a specialist at baiting D.C. politicians (it played well in his district), in particular his favorite foil, former Mayor-for-Life Marion Shepilov Barry, Jr.

You can drive from Wyoming to Virginia in two and a half hours http://goo.gl/maps/OFJfq  :bigass: :bigass: :bigass:

Some years back, a politician (I think it may have been former US Senator John Warner from Virginia, but I'm not positive) caused a bit of a ruckus in the media when he said that the 14th Street Bridge on I-395 connecting Virginia to the District of Columbia is the longest bridge in the world because it lets you drive from Virginia to Africa.

cpzilliacus might recall which politician said it.

Pretty simple: They've sunk even lower, as his replacement continues to coast to reelection. His replacement is Jim Moran, who's notorious for ethics violations and anti-Semitic comments.

He reverted to his former identity, Carl Rogers.

He actually mentioned in another thread (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=8114.msg186047#msg186047) that he was offended by what the thread had turned into... and threatened to call the police.

This gets into transfinite numbers.  Aleph-null, anyone?

No it doesn't. Transfinites are "larger" infinities. Infinity divided by infinity is indeterminate because infinity is usually defined as shorthand for a limit, and it depends how one approaches that limit. The 2x variant of infinity divided by the x variant of infinity is 2. The aleph-null variant divided by any countable variant is infinity. I'm probably mixing metaphors here and don't care to work it all out.

Kphoger's original "fact" did not say whether a limit was involved--"infinity divided by infinity" could very well have been an attempt to divide the cardinality of the set of real numbers (aleph-one, if you believe the continuum hypothesis) by the cardinality of the set of natural numbers (aleph-null).

A recent signage advertisement in Texas indicates that a section of US 83 in the lower Rio Grande Valley will be also be designated as I-169 and have interchanges with I-69E and I-69C.

The "Laredo prong" of I-69 is statutorily designated as I-69; US 83 overlaps with I-35 in Laredo and has an interchange with Loop 20, the future I-69.

In sum, US 83 will have an interchange with I-69 as I-35, but will also have interchanges with I-69C and I-69E as I-169.

Make sense?

Does this lead to the hypothesis that US 83 is the Alanland of highways: i.e. it does and does not have an interchange with Interstate Route I-69 as I-35?

Did you guys seriously ban John Madden (the thirteen-year-old from a month ago) for being new and not knowing how to use the forum? As far as I can see, the only things he did that were wrong were PMing people too much and not posting in the correct categories (which were challengeable). Both were a result of him being new, and maybe also a little young to fully understand how the internet works. But neither of these mistakes really constitute a ban in my opinion...

By Québec's numbering system, 100s are primary highways, and 200s and 300s are secondaries. The rest are autoroutes. You'd think the construction and maintenance standards follow these rules; however, this no longer applies since 1993. In an effort to reclassify some 25-30 year-old highway stretches without renumbering them, they came up with 8 highway classes: Autoroute, National, Regional, Collector, Resource Access, Local 1, Local 2 and Local 3. Those are separate from the numbering, except for autoroutes (although there is at least one unsigned autoroute, and it's probably not the one you're thinking about;) and are reproduced as different line styles on the official highway map:
Yellow & Red: Autoroute;
Red: National;
Orange & Black: Regional;
Orange: Collector;
Gray or black: Local;
White & Gray: Resource Access.

Not unlike what happened in Ontario, most of the Local 1/2/3 network has been downloaded to municipalities in the late 1990s or early 2000s. However, unlike the other province, those local roads that were numbered retained their number.

It's roadgeeky, but here's an interesting fact.

Before 2000, when Georgia went to distance exit numbering, DeKalb County had 3 Exit 35's, all involving I-285:

I-85, Exit 35 (the infamous Spaghetti Junction) is for I-285

BUT the other two are the same interchange:

I-20 Exit 35 is for I-285 AND I-285 Exit 35 is for I-20

And in adding to the previous poster, a video I made:

the number 31415926535897932384626433832795028841 is prime.

this just happens to be the first 38 digits of pi, omitting the decimal point.

3, 31, 314159, and the number above are the first four numbers for which this fact is true.

the fifth number with this property has 16208 digits.

I am not memorizing that many digits of pi.  38 is more than sufficient: if one knows the diameter of the universe, one can use that 38-digit approximation of pi and calculate its circumference with a margin of error smaller than the size of an electron.

yes.  it's about 12 meters.

actually, I did a bit of research and the diameter of the universe in electron-diameters is on the order of 10^41, which means that 38 digits of pi is just barely not enough to make that claim... change it to "diameter of a hydrogen atom", which is about 10000 times as large, and we're all set, even accounting for a bit of quibble margin.

The diameter of the observable universe is approximately 46 billion light-years.  The size of the universe as a whole is unknown.  I don't know how the hypothesis of an universe of infinite size can be squared with a total particle count of 2 x 1079.

Another rule of thumb about body measurements:  your height at age 2 is half your eventual adult height, while your height at age 3 is either 60% or 55% of your adult height (depending on whether you are a boy or girl).

Not true. I was 36 inches (3 feet) tall at age 2. I am 65.5 inches tall today (5 feet 5.5 inches).

I also blow another fun anatomy fact out of the water: A person cannot lick their own elbows". Because I can hyperextend my shoulders, I can lick my elbows.

Due to the Aleutian Islands passing 180o W, Alaska is both the westernmost and easternmost state in the US.

On I-10, The New Mexico-Texas border is closer to Santa Monica, CA than the Texas-Louisiana border. Likewise, the Texas-Louisiana border is closer to Jacksonville, FL than the Texas-New Mexico border.

Minnesota has 90,000 miles of shoreline, more than CA, FL, and HI combined.

That's a misinterpretation of east and west.  East and west are directions, not poles.  When measuring the easternmost point of something, you start at the middle of the thing and work your way eastwards, the 180th meridian notwithstanding.

If the universe is infinite (or our universe is part of a larger infinity), and matter is distributed throughout, and there are a finite (though very large) number of possible states for these clumps of matter...

(speaking as a pure layman, who graduated in something other than physics)

... then everything you see around you (including yourself in the mirror) has copies somewhere else in the universe. (Same principle as 4 people, 3 cars -- at least 2 people are using the same car.) Not only that, there are infinite copies of you. And not only normal you, but you with 2 heads, you as president, you in every daydream you ever had, come to life. There's even an I-70 through the Sierras, a Harvard doctoral program in viatology, a world where everyone is sick and tired of the Cubs winning the World Series all the time, and even an Alanland.

Fortunately, all these things would be far enough away that we don't have to think about them.

If the universe is infinite (or our universe is part of a larger infinity), and matter is distributed throughout, and there are a finite (though very large) number of possible states for these clumps of matter...

Problem #1: If there were an infinite amount of matter, the Big Bang would have been impossible. I'm looking at a universe-centric model, because space-time is bent around its edges. (In other words, our dimensionality isn't just constrained by our perception - it's constrained by the limits of physics.) What is it expanding "into?" When you fold a piece of paper (2D, for argument's sake), it bends into the 3rd dimension. When you fold space-time (4D), it bends into... the fifth dimension. Whatever that is.
Is it possible for an infinite space to have a finite amount of matter? Absolutely. It's also possible that it has an infinite amount of matter. I would argue we do not have infinite space to deal with, but if we did, it would take proof that there is matter throughout and not only in our area. (The proof would probably suffice that if there are at least two universes and no upper limit, there is infinite matter, because it has already been demonstrated that we are not the only source thereof.)
After all those presuppositions, if there is truly infinite matter and infinite space, you would be theoretically correct, that all possible states of finite amount of matter must exist, and for that matter, simultaneously. Then again, that's also discounting the idea that there is only one "now," time is an illusion, and therefore there is only one actual state of matter. Good luck with that line of logic. (:

The all-Interstate corridor between the Mississippi and the Pacific with the largest percentage of non-frontage paved old alignments is 80-84-82-90 at 78.7%, with 90 in second at 77.1%. The smallest percentage is 54.5% on 10-8, and second smallest is 55.4% on 70-25-80. Route 66 is somewhere in the middle with 71.4%, and 80 all the way (mostly Lincoln Highway) has 61.7%.

In other words, if you want to see old alignments, go to Seattle.

33 tropical cyclones have formed in the Central Pacific (140º W to the dateline) since 1982. They all were given the following Hawaiian names:
Akoni, Ema, Hana, Iwa, Keli, Lala, Moke, Oka, Peke, Uleki, Wila,
Aka, Ekeka, Hali, Iniki, Keoni, Li, Mele, Nona, Oliwa, Paka, Upana, Wene,
Alika, Ele, Huko, Ioke, Kika, Lana, Maka, Neki and Omeka.

Of these, only three reached Category 5: Oliwa, Paka and Ioke. Oliwa and Paka reached Category 5 as typhoons, but Ioke was a hurricane when it first hit the strogest category of the Saffir Simpson Scale and then while at that strenght it became a typhoon.

The blast resistance is 18,000,000 compared to 15-30 for regular blocks. The "hardness" is -1, so player damage will have no effect on the block.

well that's not nearly as fun.  I had been hoping to be able to do -1 damage every time, and by hitting it 2^32 - 1 times, cause it to roll over and play dead.

My parents and I were living on Kauai when Iwa hit there in 1982. That hurricane was nasty enough, but in 1992, my parents went through Hurricane Iniki, which was much worse (I had long since moved back to the Mainland). I still have a copy of Kauai's local newspaper The Garden Island that was the first edition printed after the storm.

One of the hotels that Iniki wrecked was the famous Coco Palms on the east side of the island. Numerous celebrities and other famous people stayed there; part of Blue Hawaii was shot there in 1962, and the hotel was just clobbered. To this day, the ruins of the Coco Palms are still moldering and rotting away while down through the decades, this proposal and that idea as to what to do with the place sprouted only to promptly wither and die because of economic, environmental or political reasons. :pan: :pan: :pan: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

In a Pythagorean triple (3, 4, 5) or (5, 12, 13) or (8, 15, 17):

One number is a multiple of 3.
One number is a multiple of 4.
One number is a multiple of 5.

These sometimes have more than one description belong to one number, but not always.

And about Minecraft, I have built real-life roads of northeast Massachusetts within about a 25 mile by 25 mile box, with some buildings too. And bedrock is impossible to break (except in Creative).

Even with the rerouting of I-85 through Greensboro, the exit #'s on I-85 and I-40 still differ by 96 (formerly Exit 219 on I-40 was at the same point as Exit 123 off I-85, while Exit 259 off I-40 was at the same point as Exit 163 off I-85...only difference of course is that Exit 227 off I-40 in Greensboro is now where Exit 131 off I-85 is also located, since Exit 219 off I-40W is what used to be Exit 123 off I-85 when I-85 ran through Death Valley).
NCDOT sort of "stretched" the milemarkers on the I-85 Greensboro bypass so that the exit numbers beyond each end would not have to be changed.  I believe that it is a 1 1/2-2 mile difference between the old I-85 and the new I-85.

There were more instances of 50 home run seasons between 1995-2010 (24) then there was between 1920-1990 (18).  Between 1961, when Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle hit 61 and 54 HRs respectively, and 1995, when Albert Belle hit 50 HRs, there were only three occurrences of 50 HR seasons (Willie Mays, 1965-52, George Foster, 1977-52, and Cecil Fielder, 1990-51).

The Coriolis Effect is a result of excess or deficit momentum of a parcel of air relative to the rotating earth.

That's something that I've seen explained in words in only one book, and I've read many.  Most books either explain it poorly or explain it with math few will understand.  That's sad, because it's one of the most beautiful concepts I've seen for teaching thinking in different frames of reference.

An inline six cylinder engine can be engineered so that it's inherently balanced.  The power strokes and other strokes work together to maintain smooth crankshaft motion.  A V-8, V-6, or any four cylinder can't do that.  The high torque and relatively low power are due to the long strokes causing high low-end torque and maximum torque at low RPMs.

That would be impossible in the Spanish AM band, which goes in 9 KhZ increments up to only 1609 AM. And still, it would be impossible to get exactly 1710 if it extended that far up, the closest possible would be 1708 AM.

False. Just make sure to a) wear goggles and b) poke the hole in the top of the tube (the part where it first came out) without squeezing and always facing away from you. Surprising how easy it is to avoid serious injury that way.

the US war that would most logically be classified as "Guerra de Secesión" would be the one of 1775-83, fought against England.

From PUCO website:

How many total area codes are available? How many are used?

There are a total of 681 usable area codes available for assignment. Of that number 325 are currently in service in the United States (as of August 31, 2004). In addition, over 40 area codes are in service in other countries that participate in the North American Numbering Plan, including Canada and a number of Caribbean nations. By comparison, there were 119 area codes in service in the United States at the end of 1991.

That wasn't secession, nor against England. It was against the Kingdom of Great Britain* and it was independence.

Secession is the Act of withdrawing - the colonies weren't part of the Kingdom, but ruled by it.

The South trying to leave the Union sounds like 'war of secession' isn't too far off the mark. If they had won it would be called something like that, but the North won, the Union was one again, and therefore its considered a Civil War and the Civil War in the USA.

*Scotland get really annoyed when you ignore them for the good stuff - lets give them the bad stuff too. And most of the population of the 13 colonies fled there from England as the Scot in power over England was oppressing them.

1861-65 was a war of secession.  That's just not the name commonly used.

I suspect something like "Confederate War of Independence" would have been used by white southerners.  I'm sure their slaves would have had some less cheerful ways to describe it.

The Hanoverians were Scottish?  Wow, the things you learn on the internet.

Also, the 'thousand number block' assignment system for local telephone service providers that is now in use in the USA has had its effect - demand for new area code numbers in the USA had dropped precipitously.

For example, NANPA announced an 'overlay' area code ('274') to cover my home '920' area code here in Wisconsin several years ago (mid-doubleaughts?  I'll have to check).  Since then, the 'thousand number block' assignment rule took effect and in consequence, that overlay has been indefinitely delayed.  I'm not expecting it until sometime deep in the 2020s, if even then.

In Canada, OTOH, it is still assignments in blocks of 10,000 numbers, even for the smallest local service providers in the smallest towns.  Thus, Canada is now what is eating up most of the newly-assigned 'World Zone 1' area code numbers.

I think you'll find the fleeing to the New World was 100-150 years before the American War of Independence.

Yeah, sure, according to the government!  :-D
