Amazon.com has copies of the MUTCD available for 2000 and 2009. Also a CD-Rom for rules regarding Clearview Typeface.
They also have 2010 Calfornia MUTCD.

It must be a generational thing, but while most of my coworkers pass around our hard copies of the 2009, I pretty much always use the online version (saved to our files, of course). I find it much quicker to do searches and flip through file pages (I can find a W16-2P in seconds instead of minutes). Why pay for a hard copy when you can see the whole thing for free? (Note: not all states with supplements or their own MUTCDs publish them online, but a fair number do - I've retrieved four or five already.)

I wish they'd sell an "official" Highway Gothic set of fonts, though. I've found the official Clearview but there are a million and one takes on the FHWA Series.

I've called them up before and they won't sell to individuals, despite what it says on their website (regarding an educational discount). In fact, when I called, they were quite suspicious for some reason and wanted to know exactly what I wanted them for.

They told me I had to have either a govt. contract or be calling on behalf of some sort of DOT. I didn't realize simply selling someone some fonts was such a gigantic security measure or w/e.

Intriguing on that page is the concept of "FHWA XV" fonts, which are supposedly supposed to address some of the issues some agencies have with Clearview through some modifications to the FHWA 2000 series fonts.

Too bad the page hasn't been updated in 5 years... or that this site is apparently shady...

how accurate is that Series A?  

I remember making up my set from a printed 1966 reference, with diagrams complete with lengths and radii.  The digit "8" contained several instructions which were contradictory, so for that I kinda did the best I could.  But I would like a proper "8", if one is possible.

I don't really have a good guide showing Series A numerals, so I can't speak for Saa's accuracy. But it's the only easily obtainable set I know of that has a Series A. Someone told me the entire set itself is based on an older MUTCD standard, perhaps from the 1970s or so.
