What happened to the rest of Route 55 in NJ?

Does Route 55 need to exist? What is the point if it just ends at 47? I believe it was originally designed to extend all the way to Cape May, but was cancelled due to environmental issues. One thing I read is that 55 could be extended, but would have to be elevated for most of its length. Now that would be awesome, but costly. Who agrees it should extend to the shore?

Quite frankly, it was delayed a bit too long and hit too many environmental issues to be able to make it any farther east. The idea was to bring it along roughly the NJ 83 corridor as opposed to 47. It's not officially dead, but you have more chance of seeing NJ 18 extended to 34/35/70...

Do thin NJ will ever widen Route 47/347 into Cape May County.  That would be an improvement.   As would 70 and 72 being widended.  But NJ probably won't  all these roads are in the Pinelands Preserve

One way it could be built is the South Jersey Transporation Authority (SJTA) funding it, they maintain the atlantic city expressway and the atlantic city international airport. http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/news/press/atlantic/article_ae30f6b6-5192-53d8-8897-00d23f1dbb45.html Even if it were a toll section of a state freeway, it would still be better than what it currently is

Pinelands is right, SJTA is wrong. SJTA will probably be absorbed into NJTA before 55 comes up again.
