whoops sorry. I'm pretty sure it's there. This one was given to me and that corner was torn off. If the other cities had downtown areas I'm sure this one did too

California
- Los Angeles
- San Diego
- SF Bay Area

Colorado
- Denver
- Metro
- Downtown
- Boulder
- Colorado Springs
- Metro
- Downtown
- Ft Collins
- Grand Junction
- Greeley

Just those 3 for CA? Not even the capital? Not even a downtown map? that's terrible.
Unfortunately, that is the case. The state map provided at welcome centers is pretty underwhelming.

Yeah, compare that to editions of the past, including the 1961 version:

http://www.cosmos-monitor.com/ca/map1961/index.html

Medium scale regional insets for the Bay Area and Los Angeles, and closer-scale insets for cities on top of that.

(that site also has the 1936, 1956 and 1966 maps scanned)

The 1966 version, although it only has city insets for the Bay Area and L.A., has the (IMO) very nice Gousha cartography.

The 1961 map has some interesting proposals. I like the Sacramento East and South bypass and the more direct connection between Tracy and Antioch. Nice find. Any reason why CA decided to scale back to just 3 cities?

Delaware:
Northern New Castle County, Wilmington, Seaford-Blades, Lewes, Millville- Bethany, Fenewick Island, New Castle, Newark, Midway and beach communities

This is what I have for Delaware, for those confused:
  • Wilmington
  • Dover (there you go, hobsini2)
  • Newark
  • New Castle
  • Seaford/Blades
  • Lewes
  • Rehoboth Beach/Henlopen Acres/Dewey Beach
  • Bethany Beach/South Bethany/Ocean View/Millville
  • Fenwick Island

Connecticut:
  • Stamford/Norwalk area
  • New London/Mystic area
  • Greenwich
  • Danbury
  • Bridgeport area
  • Ansonia/Derby/Shelton
  • Bradley Int'l Airport area
  • Hartford area (incl. downtown sub-inset)
  • Bristol/New Britain
  • Norwich area
  • Wallingford
  • Willimantic
  • Middletown/Portland
  • Meriden
  • New Haven
  • Waterbury

Maryland:
  • Aberdeen
  • Cambridge
  • Ocean City
  • Bel Air
  • Havre de Grace
  • Deep Creek Lake (?)
  • Salisbury
  • Cumberland
  • Easton
  • Elkton
  • Frederick
  • Hagerstown
  • Westminster
  • B-W metro area, including downtown Baltimore and Annapolis
Don't ask me why Deep Creek Lake has an inset. Replace it with somewhere that people actually go to, like Lexington Park or Hancock.

O we just need Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Utah.

I have decided for the states that are missing, I will see if I can order a paper map from those state dots. I already sent in for Alaska and Arizona.

I'll help you out with a few of those right now:

-Alaska
Officially, no city insets on the map I got from their DOT

-Arizona
  Phoenix, Tuscon, Flagstaff and Yuma

-Kansas
Kansas City, Topeka, Hutchinson, Lawrence, Pittsburg, Hays, Emporia, Wichita, Newton, Manhattan, Salina, Dodge City,  Junction City, Great Bend, Liberal and Garden City

-Maine
Lewiston/Auburn, Ellsworth, Belfast/Searsport, Bangor/Brewer/Rockland, Boothbay Harbor, Augusta, Brunswick, Acadia National Park, Greater Portland, Kennebunk/Kennebunkport and Old Orchard Beach/Saco

-New Hampshire
Berlin, Conway, Laconia, Rochester, Franklin, Somersworth, Lebanon, Dover, Portsmouth, Claremont, Keene, Concord, Manchester and Nashua

-New York
I recall only an official state map in the visitors guide and it was the same cartography as Mapworks. I did buy a Mapworks map of New York although I don't remember all the cities, the usual ones (New York, Albany, Rochester, Syracuse and Buffalo were all there plus downtown maps) and there were a few others. However, I'm not sure if this qualifies an an OFFICIAL DOT map

-Rhode Island
  Central Providence and Newport

-Utah
Wastach Front (Salt Lake City, Ogden and Provo,) Logan and St. George

Nothing on Hawaii and Idaho as I don't have either map.

Alps

New York has two state maps. The New York State Map is the one I believe to be the official one, and has the following insets:

Front: NYC/LI (continuation of main map), zoomed-out NY State Parks map with park outlines and Interstates/NY 17
Back, in order of appearance: Binghamton, Utica, Ithaca, Elmira, Syracuse, Schenectady, Capital District, Downtown Albany, NYC 5 boroughs, Manhattan (special street-level up to 120th), Buffalo/Niagara, Rochester

The New York State Travel Map is published by the State Hospitality and Tourism Association and has no insets except for the NYC/LI.

hobsini2

Tdindy88, Does the Wastach Front map include Park City/Heber City or is it cut off just east of the I-80/215 east jct?

That's sad that Alaska has no insets what so ever.

BTW, TY to all who are contributing to this listing. I have created a word doc for a full index of DOT inset maps. Much appreciation for the help.

tdindy88

Yes, Park City and Heber City are included in the inset. It goes as far east as the junction of I-80 and I-84 I believe.

hobsini2

Ok i have attempted to order a Hawaii and Idaho map. Idaho - success. Hawaii - no success. I even tried to use the Hawaii DOT page and nothing. No way to contact other than calling them. I am doubting they publish such a map.

Where does one request the NY map? My box here is missing a few states yet, and NY is one. (AL and MS are others because I'm too cheap/broke at the moment to pay them for what the other states give away for free.)

Hawaii doesn't make a single statewide highway map. When I e-mailed the communications office at HDOT looking for something, I received back individual maps for the islands. One side is the airport terminal layout and the other is a road map.
Hawai'i: Hilo, Kaliua—Kona insets; Kona International Airport and Hilo International Airport
Maui: Lahaina, Wailuku & Kahului insets; Kahului Airport
Oahu: Waikiki, Honolulu insets; Honolulu International Airport
Kauau'i: Wailua, Poipu, Lihu'e insets; Lihue Airport

Has anyone successfully requested an Alaska map? I requested one back when Palin was still governor and ADOT&PF never acknowledged my request in any way.

I ended up with three, and here's my quick story. At one point, I sent the e-mail to request one, and nothing happened. Some time later, I must have sent another, and still nothing happened. When I was on my kick last year about requesting maps from all of the states, provinces and territories I lacked, I e-mailed the director of communications at the ADOT&PF to request one. He sent me a personal reply saying that the office that handled the map requests was horribly backlogged, but he personally had one mailed to me. Well, in the subsequent weeks, two additional maps arrived by mail to fulfill my original requests. It seems that he shook things up in that office and put someone on the job of actually mailing out maps.

bulldog1979

Ping me if we need any more states' lists of insets. In my box here, I have the maps from:

AK, AB, AZ, AR, BC, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, GU, HI, ID, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, LA, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MO, MT, NE, NV, NH, NJ, NM, NL, NC, ND, NS, NU, OH, OK, ON, OR, PA, QC, RI, SK, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WV WI, WY, YT

The only requests I remember putting in were to Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. I've also worked with NJDOT before on a large map request for a road meet. I generally try to amass my collection in 2 ways: state rest areas or road meets.

hobsini2

Bulldog, check the ones you have for Alaska, Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah.  I just wonder if some of the states changed their designs where either now or in the past more insets were used for these states.
Like I mentioned earlier, Wisconsin back in 1983 had a lot more insets than now. I believe they changed their threshold from 10,000 to 20,000 or 25,000 during the late 80s/early 90s.  I know the 1983 edition had Marshfield, Watertown, Monroe, Menomonie, and Whitewater.  Each of those cities just disappeared from the insets page.

It would be cool to add Canada to this listing too since most atlases already include them.

I think in cases like Hawaii where there is no official state map, I think we should use what some of the atlas companies have used. Honolulu and Hilo. I have never seen any other insets for Hawaii in the atlases.

On the way to the Chicago meet I stopped at an OK travel info center and inquired about getting ten or so copies of the map to hand out. The lady behind the counter simply handed over a pile of maps, still in their packing strap, as if it were the most normal request in the world. It ended up being like 25 maps.

Somewhere I still have like ten of them floating around.
