The PA Turnpike uses distances to exits along the route, primarly the next 2 exits except WB from the Delaware River Bridge listing the NE Extension as a third point and even the far off Harrisburg exit.
Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.

Add the westbound one from Valley Forge (I-76 East/US 202-422) and the eastbound one from Downingtown (PA 100) to that exceptions list; both feature 3 listings that include the new PA 29/EZ-Pass Only interchange.

NJ usually has distance signs on the blue Gas, Lodging, and Food signs, but towns are just mentioned by name. At least at freeway exits. I've seen random intersections on semi-important roads (US-206 is an example) post towns with arrows and mileage information.

Re: whether the distances are to the town center or the edge of town, I've seen at least one of those town arrow signs with 0 as the mileage. Don't remember what state that was in. I assume that means you are already in the town in question, but the center of town is in the direction the arrow is pointing.

Ohio must do it to the center of town--or else this is way out of whack.

1/2 mile distance

From here.....

to here.

(If you can't easily see, that's from the "Mansfield 6" sign to the "Mansfield CORP LIMIT" bgs.)

Based on anecdotal observation, I'd say that's correct.

The dilemma presented by the OP, not knowing which way to turn for the closest place to relieve his bladder or fill up the vehicle, is being solved more and more often with blue services signs that include distances. Though I've seen several with distances to all businesses, here's an older one that warns of a business that is 2 miles away: https://www.google.com/maps/@40.052168,-85.653647,3a,75y,90h,90t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sOC7F_HqYG1zauXKJR0pi5w!2e0?hl=en

2 miles is child's play!  Steve's I-17 page has a great pic of some unusually long distances.

At the other end of the spectrum there is a sign on the ramp from I-77 SB to OH 162 listing 1/8 as the distance to a gas station that is right at the intersection where the ramp meets the road.  Guess they felt that they had to put something there, but that just seems silly.
