All banana trees that are currently used to grow fruit for popular consumption are genetically identical, essentially clones of each other.  The only way that they reproduce is through cuttings.

Mike

This cannot be true.  Nearly every grocery store we shop at has more than one variety of banana for sale.

There are other minor varieties and growers are starting to trend towards them, but the far and away most common, familiar variety are all clones of each other.  The problem is that while when that variety was developed several decades ago and at that time was immune to all known pathogens, one has emerged.  This has happened before - that variety was developed then because the previous common variety was nearly wiped out by a pathogen.

From the 5%: Gainesville, GA has an ordinance making it unlawful to eat fried chicken in any manner other than with one's fingers.  In other words, one cannot lawfully use a knife and fork.

There are four 45 degrees latitude by 90 degrees longitude points on the planet.  Two are on open ocean - the two 45S by 90 points - 45S/90W is in the Pacific Ocean about 1200 km west of the coast of southern Chile and 45S/90E point is in the Indian Ocean, about 2300 km west-southwest of Perth, WA, Australia, while the other two are on land.  45N/90E is in a very remote location in northwestern China ( http://goo.gl/maps/vQlDm ) while the 45N/90W point is in a farm field located short distance north of WI 29 in a rural part of north central Wisconsin ( http://goo.gl/maps/TocsB ).

So, basically, "˜All banana trees that are currently used' really means "˜A lot of banana trees'.

In other news.....  Bananas do not grow on trees.

One can only hope that the original TheAlan is not like Sam Bell, and that TheAlan360 is not racing the clock with TheAlan361 to get a message out to the Eureka PD.
