Yes, it's from The Weather Channel, but it's definitely about roads! In this case, it's about a new set of tunnels south of San Francisco. It's in an area some have called "The Devil's Slide."

Wow.  This has been talked about for the past 75 years.  Tom Lantos was advocating for it as a freshman congressman back in the 1980s.

Has anybody found any good photos of this project?  Sounds cool.

There are extensive photo galleries available on the project's webpage... http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist4/dslide/dsphotos.htm

This is one of the things I like about my local Caltrans District (District 4 - S.F. Bay Area) is they have a huge archive of photo galleries of almost all construction projects going on in the Bay Area.

If I owned a dam and decided to donate it to charity, would I be giving a dam? I'm sure that might be a first because no one really gives a dam.

So when will the route be open to traffic?  The article said nothing about that.

Rick
US 101 is THE backbone of the Pacific coast from Bandon OR to Willits CA.  Industry, tourism and local traffic would be gone or severely crippled without it being in functioning condition in BOTH states.

That's what you get when your source for a road-related story is the Weather Channel. :sombrero:

Seriously though, I believe the tunnels are in final testing right now and I suspect the grand opening would be sometime in March barring any unforeseen problems.

Don't blame the Weather Channel.  Caltrans' own site says no official opening date has been set.

Yeah. Those tunnels were designed to reroute Roue 1 from the "Devil's Slide" as they call it and onto those tunnels. The former alignment would be old Route 1, and since the Devil's Slide was dangerous, they decided to build it. It had taken 7 years for them to build it for some reason.

Fuck GPS. I rather use my brain and common sense.
