Any examples of FHWA in articles in newspapers, magazines etc?

Not perfect, but close to Series C. There is some Series E at the top right with the '9'.

That's actually Interstate, which is a font based on the FHWA Series fonts, but with some edits made to make it more print-friendly. You can find a fair number of uses of it out there.

Didn't the 2000 census use it? I don't know for sure, because I still haven't received my 2000 census form.

"Interstate"  was the typeface used by the IntelliStar, The Weather Channel's local forecast computer system, from roughly 2000 to 2008.
