And Google is wrong.  The first modern three-way, red-yellow-green signal everyone knows was invented in 1920.    This two-color signal was merely a step on the way.

Perhaps you should read what exactly they're commemorating again.

The key difference that Google is celebrating between the Cleveland one and the near-identical earlier ones in London is not that the operator could sit in a booth, as Vox mentions (I'm not sure if correct though) but that the lights were electric, not gas.

Automated lights were around before too long - the UK got its first in 1927.
