It was recently announced that the Federal Highway Administration will be amending the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices to allow color-named counties to use an appropriate color scheme for county route shields instead of the standard blue background and yellow text. This changes occurs after years of aggressive lobbying from the Orange County Department of Public Works, which felt it was wrong that their county route shields were required to be blue rather than orange. Once the change goes into effect, they plan to gradually replace their existing county route signs with new ones that use an orange background and dark blue text, similar to what was once used by Nassau County. Similar, Greene County plans to begins using a green background with white text, similar to parkways in the Hudson Valley except in the shape of a county route shield instead of a state route shield. Comment is still awaited from Orange County, Florida.

I know this is real because Orange County FL doesn't give a shit about county roads. You almost had me convinced it was another lame April Fools joke.

I accept and respect your identity as long as it's not dumb shit like "identifying as a vaccinated attack helicopter".

In related news, Albany County, New York successfully lobbied the Federal Highway Administration to have the stencil font for county route signs included in the next version of the MUTCD. This font will be an option in the next version, with the intent to become mandatory in 2 editions.

And in other news, in a big "F You!" to the feds, ALDOT is mandating that all traffic signals have green on top, along with not signing any US routes or Interstates.
It's all fun & games until someone summons Cthulhu and brings about the end of the world.

I also collect traffic lights, road signs, fans, and railroad crossing equipment.

Indiana very rarely uses county route shields, but I doubt that Brown County can pass up this opportunity. I hope Vermilion County doesn't go for it. It might cause an increase in rear end accidents when drivers think they see stop signs.

Someone should pass the memo on to Orange County, Texas; White County in Illinois and Indiana; and Brown County in Illinois and Indiana.  Do you think they'll approve making the change to only the side of the route shields in Whiteside County, IL?
Avatar is the last interesting highway I clinched.

Not to be confused with the New England states, which never use county route shields.

Also, the MUTCD is now requiring that logo signs use a Fairy Tale Pink background to distinguish them from General Service Signs and Adopt-A-Highway Signs, and is now making logo signs mandatory in both urban and rural areas, with the mandate also requiring state MUTCDs to comply.

MUTCD has also announced that beginning with Pennsylvania, states may experiment with button-copy Clearview on green highway signs for the next 5 years.  PennDOT will start issuing contracts with contractors beginning May 15th for a FastTrack sign replacement  project which should upgrade all guide signs to button-copy Clearview by 2019.
