N.Y. Times: Caffeine May Boost Driver Safety

QuoteLong-haul truck drivers who drink coffee or other caffeinated drinks are significantly less likely to have an accident than their uncaffeinated peers.

QuoteAustralian researchers looked at data on 530 drivers recently involved in a crash, comparing them with 517 who had not had an accident within the past 12 months. All were driving tractor units with one, two or three trailers.

Thank goodness for the Red Bull/5 Hour Energy Drink/Mountain Dew combo keeping them drivers awake!

I had no idea that caffeine would keep you awake.  Thank God this was studied, maybe now the convenience stores along major trucking routes will have to start selling coffee.

Those glasses of warm milk that they've been selling haven't worked out so well. Very little repeat business.

You have to look beyond awakeness to awareness here, and in the middle of being caffeinated, you're definitely a smidge more aware. Being a little more aware adds to safety. You might hit the brake a second quicker, anticipate someone else's movement a little sooner and evade it, etc.

I should have added awareness to my previous post as well

I red somewhere that cinnamon is good for keeping you aware while driving. Put some ground cinnamon in the ashtray (or somewhere else in your car) and it helps alertness.

Real truck drivers use meth.

I remember the White Cross pills (ephedrine)they sold in C-store and Truck stops... Now that would keep you awake but they took them off the market because they were used to make Meth

You can still buy them over the counter at pharmacies like CVS. Primatene is one brand. They're marketed (and I use them) as decongestants, like a stronger Sudafed.

Is Primatene still sold over the counter? Someone told me a couple years ago it was only available by prescription now.

It is still available in Texas, but like pseudoephedrine, in limited quantities from select pharmacies, adults only, purchaser must show government-issued ID, etc.

It's still OTC in most states. Like US81 said though, there are monthly purchase limits and you have to show ID. It's a true "over the counter" as it's not on the shelf, you have to ask the pharmacist.
