Lots to choose from for this.  Here are three I find interesting or unusual.  Maybe I'll do three more later.

Nene Crossing on the road up Haleakala in Haleakala NP on Maui.  August 25, 2006.

Panther Crossing on CR 951 in Golden Gate, Florida.  June 29, 2006.

Gopher Tortoise Crossing on Sanibel Island, Florida.  December 30, 2010.

[moose crossing sign]

I-89 in New Hampshire.

I think I may have a photo of that very same sign, but unfortunately it's buried in an old phone that I've apparently forgotten the passcode to.

Here's three, all taken on January 24, 2009, in the western part of Hawaii's Big Island.

Another nene crossing:

A sheep crossing, on one of the newer sections of Saddle Road (HI 200):

Finally, some wild donkey crossings, on Queen Kaahumanu Highway (part of HI 19) north of the Kailua-Kona airport:

I have more from other places I might roll out later.

That same one was my next choice.  I decided to go with the Panther Crossing instead for the first batch.

Three more I dredged up from my digital photo archives. Many of the ones I wanted to play turned out to be picture-only.

In a rest area along ON 69, this sign tries to counter the usual impulse to speed up and run over snakes:

A seasonal terrapin crossing warning, in the New Jersey part of the Gateway National Recreation Area:

Finally, a billboard (along US 65) rather than an official sign, but it's so appalling I want to share it anyway -- the Titanic museum in Branson MO sinks low in its exploitation of the tragedy:

Last one from me, this from a deep dive into my film photo archives.

Weatherbeaten sign for the mule crossing on Molokai's HI 470, used by Molokai Mule Ride tours to and from Kalawao County (I took the photo in 2005, but took the tour in 1999 during my first visit to Hawaii):

No offense but what does that pic have to do with the subject matter (reposted below)?

My bad, I didn't see. I'm not much of a sign guy, I'm more of a signal geek.

Ah, that explains it! ...Oh wait, no–that actually does the opposite of explaining it. :-D

Well, the first photo already used "Mass.", so technically this one wouldn't count... However, the Challenge could be easily reworded to make it count.

Didn't realize we were not permitting duplicates.  I can delete the "Mass Pike" if needed.

Anyway, here's "Colo" for "Colorado".  I-70.  March 6, 2013.

Nah, it was mostly a joke. ;-)

(The rules do prohibit more than one photo for any single answer, and since the Challenge only asks for "abbreviations", rather than "signs containing abbreviations", that would only allow one photo for each different abbreviation. But of course, abbreviations by themselves aren't road-related, so that would make the whole Challenge off-topic anyhow. :))

W VA must be the text Ohio uses. Here's another one near Ironton just across from Huntington, WV

A lot of people like to add the second "L" in "ILLinois."  This is on US41 in Indiana.
