Filming New Route Construction?

I'm working on a personal documentary film project about roads, and one of the things I would really love to feature is the process of constructing a new route.  There was a VHS tape that I adored as a kid that showed the whole process, from the initial surveying through the final striping.  I suppose I'm just trying to relive that!

My question is whether there are any projects that people are aware of, or if there is a good resource for finding current DOT projects from around the country?  I've found a number of state-level sites, and those have proven very useful but time-consuming to sift through, as most states have hundreds of active projects, proposals, studies etc.

Any guidance would be much appreciated!
