I've been putting covering CA 1 between Santa Monica and San Luis Obispo on Gribblenation off for awhile but my interest was renewed after recently driving through Malibu.  Prior to the 1964 State Highway Renumbering CA 1 ended at US 101 near the Gaviota Tunnel.  During the 1964 State Highway Renumbering CA 1 was extended over US 101 on a multiplex to Oxnard and over what was US 101A to San Juan Capistrano.  US 101A was originally signed as the first CA 3 before the designation was swapped in late 1935.  The southern segment of CA 1 has some really interesting places such as; the drive through Malibu, Point Magu Rock and Gavoita Pass.  I linked over all the previous Gribblenation articles in the blog along with all applicable maps/Public Works documents which have popped up over the years.  Most of the photos are from circa 2014 when I drove CA 1 from I-10 north to CA 68 in a single day.

Between the OC and the Golden Gate Bridge, SR 1/PCH has so many variations in road type as to defy description.  It is a wonderful route to explore due to the variety encountered upon it for highway types as well as what one can see.  Thanks for another fine collection of photos Max!

US 101 is THE backbone of the Pacific coast from Bandon OR to Willits CA.  Industry, tourism and local traffic would be gone or severely crippled without it being in functioning condition in BOTH states.

In Oxnard, did you travel along the new designation of CA 1 (Rice Ave)? Or the still-erroneously-signed-on-Apple Maps designation of Oxnard Blvd?

It was 2014 when I last used CA 1 as a through route from Malibu.  That being said I'm fairly certain I drove on Oxnard Boulevard but my photos aren't the same level as I keep now so I'm honestly not all that sure.  The photos accompanying this blog need a severe update which is really one of the big reasons I dragged my feet on this one.  I'm looking at getting out towards Ventura to get some new photos of routes; 118, 34, 232, 150, 192, 144, 225, 217, 154, 246 and Cuesta Pass during 4th of July weekend.  That being the case I'll probably be on CA 1 from Gaviota Pass through to SLO since it doesn't take me too out of my way.
