Many of the more modern meters will also tell you if you have to pay or not.  They are aware of the day of the week, time of day, and even whether it is a holiday.  They can also warn you of other restrictions that are irregular, like a 2 hour no parking zone for street cleaning on Tuesday mornings.

I saw this on Saturday evening when I checked a meter to see if it needed to be fed.   The display said, "No fees are due until Monday at 8:00 AM"

Many of the on-street spaces allow you to park for up to 4 hours, which seems unusually time generous for a meter [most in my experience are 1 hour or 2 hours].

I was a little surprised by the prevalence of 10-hour metered parking when I was in Seattle last week. (That happens to equal the length of the enforcement window, meaning it's effectively metered all-day parking.)

I've seen 12 hour meters in some NJ shore towns.
