It appears to have been a temporary routing built when what is now I-40 was being built.

I'm also wondering if this section of Washboard Rd (Not the one that is the frontage road of I-40), near the Painted Desert & Petrified Forest was an older routing of Route 66.
The Washboard Rd that I am talking about here is the one that ends at a long dirt driveway. I've noticed that there appears to be an old roadbed that continues East from there across I-40 to Old Route 66.

An old abandoned culvert (behind a bush) along the North side of US 24 between Dover, MO & Lexington, MO. (You might have to zoom in a bit to see it.).

I've been past this several times & have done some research on it & found out that it may have been part of the original routing of US 24 in this area. I also think it probably carried US 24 predessors (The original State Highway 20 & the National Old Trails Road.).
I believe the culvert is now on private property.

if you like submerged highways, check out old NC 288 in fontana lake. it still reappears in the winter when lake levels drop. nearby there is also a cool never-finished road with a tunnel that was intended to be a replacement highway.

Old IL 13 has been claimed by Crab Orchard Lake between Carterville and Carbondale...parts of it are visible on the land between the main Old 13 lake terminals, which are now a Marina on the Carbondale side and a Boat Ramp on the Carterville side. Part of Foreville Rd is part of Old IL 13, for example

Do you mean NC 28 (I coudn't find a NC 288 anywhere near Fontana Lake, NC). I also have seen a road called CO HWY 1245 (of wich NC 28 turns off of.) which intersects with another road that heads off to the lake (this other road also parallels NC 28.). Also, do you know where the tunnel is located.

I think I have seen this before. When was Crab Orchard Lake created. Also, I wonder if Playport Rd on the West side of the lake was an even older alignment.

Ok, Now that I have taken some time to read up on it, I think I get it now. The part of what is now NC 28 from US 129 to just North of Fontana, NC was the part of NC 288 that didn't get flooded. According to Wikipedia (& the NCRoads.com site.), that section of NC 288 was renumbered NC 28 in 1954 after new construction was completed between Fontana, NC & Almond, NC. (That's why I wasn't finding it, I was looking for a road called NC 288.)
Wikipedia also has an article about the Road to Nowhere (Also called Lakeview Drive.) as well. It's all pretty fascinating & looks like it would be a fun place to explore.

I remember being in this area on a roadtrip back in 2002 & finding an old outhouse along the old road (I don't know if it's there anymore.) southeast of the rest area.
I also remember seeing some old abandoned culverts & bridges along this old road, but I think some of them are on private property.
There seems to be a lot of long abandoned stretches (As well as stretches that are being used as county roads, driveways or as access for farmers to their fields.) of Old US 385 between Bridgeport, NE & Chadron, NE.
I would like to find videos of this old road on YouTube, but I don't know where to look.
I also would like to know when this road was rerouted & If it was still N-19 at the time. (I know that the part of US 385 North of Alliance was rerouted in 2000.)

Alignment of Old US 40 (Along the North side of current US 40.) between Columbia, MO & Boonville, MO.
Segments of this stretch have been converted into private drives, as well as access roads into farmers fields.

US 40 between Columbia, MO & Boonville, MO seems to have been heavily rerouted, with some parts becoming MO 240, Alternate MO 240, Various county roads & streets, as well as the aforementioned private drives & access roads into farmers fields.
I wonder when all this was rerouted.
