One of my summer interships was with a bridge inspection crew in the Boston area.  I remember being at the top of a ladder removing slabs of rust the size of dinner plates to get down to the bare steel and measuring how much structural support was left.  One small section of a bridge was so bad that the concrete roadway slab was the only thing holding it up!
