Here's a county road in western Los Angeles County.  It connects California SR 1 (Pacific Coast Hwy) in Malibu with US 101 in Calabasas, crossing over the Santa Monica Mountains.  From south or north, here are some pics:

The only northbound shield just north of SR 1.  Pepperdine University is at left.

Interchange with US 101.  Maps from the 1970s and 80s identify this as 'Brents Junction'; this area is now within Calabasas.

That N1 shield looks to be in sad shape.  Hard to believe that the Division of Highways was serious about building CA 64 as freeway through Malibu Canyon.

I drove this a few months back. It's a very nice scenic road. The tunnel is fun and I remember the surface being good overall. I'd hate to see a freeway through there.

And you likely never will -- courtesy of both Caltrans reprioritization and the presence of the California Coastal Commission, which has to sign off on anything from the Santa Monica mountain ridgeline south to the ocean.  With all SF Valley-related funding currently directed toward transit, CA 64 -- an alignment was never adopted and it remains strictly a 61-year-old corridor concept -- is dead in the water (in any case, the property acquisition costs alone would render it prohibitive).
