Yes. Cities can request the state to number traffic signals along a certain route. Those numbers have been a source of directions for Gatlinburg for decades. "Turn left at Traffic Light #3."

Yes. Cities can request the state to number traffic signals along a certain route. Those numbers have been a source of directions for Gatlinburg for decades. "Turn left at Traffic Light #3."

I've seen them in a number of medium-sized cities; usually just in Tennessee and Kentucky, but I also saw them in Orange Beach (Alabama) a few months ago.

Usually the street name suffices for directions, but sometimes there's places in which there's a light for some shopping plaza or some other commercial property which has no road name.
