DE-Comissioned Routes You've Clinched?

US 89

I know I traveled parts of Utah 195 and 181 while those still existed, but I'm not sure whether I fully clinched them before they got decommed in the late 2000s. 195 seems more likely than 181.

As far as old route alignments whose numbers no longer exist ... way way too many to keep track of.

Routes that were still in existence when I clinched them:

DE 34
I-695 (DC)
MD 516, MD 901, MD 996
I-95 Bus (Rocky Mt), I-495, original US 17 Bus Windsor, US 64 Bus (Tarboro); US 70-258 Bus (Kinston);  NC 3 (now NC 136); NC 6, NC 44 (Tarboro), NC 44 (Goldsboro)
US 17 Bus (Mt Pleasant); US 76-123 Bus (Seneca); SC 31 (now I-526); SC 73; SC 478 (now I-77 btw I-26 and US 76-378);
TN 42
VA 44 (now I-264); VA 104; VA 163 (Williamsburg); VA 167 (Hampton); VA 212 #5; VA 253 (Occoquan); VA 275 (Staunton); VA 357; VA 386; VA 408; VA 409 (Tidewater); VA 410; VA 411 (Va Beach); VA 414; VA 416
WV 59

Former US routes I've driven the last iteration of in their entirety since their decommission (i.e. not renumbered as another US route):
US 48 (MD/WV), US 111, US 140, US 213, US 230, US 240

Sure I'm forgetting a few...

Not going to try to list former state routes that were decommissioned (not renumbered) and I drove their entirety later.  Couple hundred of these at least.

Several state routes in Kentucky that have been turned over to counties or cities. Closest one to me is KY 1398.

And US 227. Part of it did get renumbered to KY 227, but not all. Part disappeared entirely (because it was concurrent with US 460) and the rest became KY 627.
Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

Regarding the US 27 family I did fully clinch the highway in Michigan before it was decommissioned.   I also have driven what can be done by car of what would have been US 16, M-16, US 25 and US 112.

For Arizona some that come to mind that I've replicated:

-  AZ 62
-  AZ 63
-  AZ 65
-  US 66
-  AZ 79 (designations 1 and 2)
-  US 80
-  AZ 81 (the first designation)
-  AZ 89L
-  US 91
-  AZ 93
-  AZ 160
-  AZ 164 (designations 1 and 2)
-  US 164
-  AZ 166
-  AZ 170
-  AZ 172
-  AZ 173
-  US 180 (first designation)
-  US 260
-  AZ 279
-  AZ 360
-  AZ 364
-  AZ 464
-  US 466
-  AZ 504
-  US 666
-  AZ 789

Arizona has had a lot of State Highways swap numbers, were decommissioned to places like National Monuments or became US Routes.  With stuff like US 66 and US 80 I might not have clinched any particular vintage pre-Interstate era given much of those segments have been obliterated.

I had I-164 clinched before it became I-69.
I had I-265 cliched in Nashville before they rearranged.

In Florida, I had FL9A clinched before it became I-295.

In Colorado:
CO29
CO33
CO68
CO110
CO122
CO187
CO233

I am going to go ahead and count the former CO-789 as my longest to date (which pretty much was a cross-state N-S route which multiplexed over various other routes).  After clinching CO-13 north of Craig a couple of weeks ago, I pretty much have traveled the entire length of the old route sometime or another.

Like Max and Stranger, my qualifying routes are former state highways with the number not currently in use in CA:  from south to north, CA 117 (SD County iteration), CA 209, CA 274, CA 106, CA 206, CA 224, CA 176, CA 141.  All are gone, but CA 117 became CA 905 and CA 106 was from 1974-1991 the rerouted CA 30, but the alignment was relinquished in favor of the eastern end of the CA 30 ("Foothill") freeway, now the east end of CA 210.  Everything else is a straightforward relinquishment.

I've gotten all of it except US550 between New Mexico and Durango.  I'll probably pick it up this summer.

The former I-86 (as a passenger)
CT 291 (as a passenger)
CT 9A (as a passenger)
The portions of CT 72 east of New Britain (as a passenger and before CT 9 was built north of I-91) and it's old alignment through Forestville (driven)

The portions of CT 66 west of I-91 (as a passenger before I-691 was completed to I-84)
I-95 between Bristol, PA and Lawrenceville, NJ
That reminds me...I missed one.  I have actually driven on RI-195 before it was US-6.  I remember the renumbering messing me up one time on my way back home from Ithaca because I was looking for "RI-195".

I had NE 38 before Nebraska decommissioned it in 2003.

In Minnesota, I can definitely say I got MN 110 before MN 62 took it over. I also had the original route of MN 95 when it went through Afton and Lakeland rather than go straight north on Manning Ave. north to I-94.

As for Iowa, I had a few that were decommissioned in 2003. IA 91, IA 385, IA 41 and, bizarrely, IA 107 were all done before they were decommissioned, amongst others.  I say bizarrely for IA 107 because it was 18 years before I moved to this area. As for post-2003 decommissionings, there were IA 370 and IA 192.

I know, but I don't count that I've clinched FL9 just because it's the secret designation for I-95.  Seems silly.

The once signed I-124.  It is still I-124 but the signage was taken down in favor of US 27.

I-55

Julian M Carroll Purchase Parkway. I'm pretty sure the southern end still is signed but if it is it won't be for much longer. Also IN-431.

How about the old US31W in IN.  Actually now it is also the old IN 131 and current CR 311.

US 31W became IN 311 and then CH 311. IN 131 was a different road.

Illinois: counties 100%, highways 61%
Michigan: counties 100%, highways 56%

Are there good resources for this? I at least know of guides for US 66 and US 80, and I'm sure there are guides for routes like US 99. What's the easiest way to follow old US routes?

The last state official maps for these.  These made it to the modern day, so it's not like trying to piece together how they ran in the 1930s or anything like that.

US 48 is just I-68 today
US 213 is just MD 213 today if you are driving the configuration when it was retired
US 240 is just I-270 and MD 355 into DC, etc.

If I were to attempt driving the first iterations of these when they were created, that would involve a lot more research using old county maps, old topo maps, websites similar to the Virginia Hwys page that have attempted to describe where these routes used to run etc...

Avalanchez71

I-65 was a routing for US 31E once upon a time.

US 31E used to run from Ellington Pkwy to Briley Pkwy to I-65 to Vietnam Veterans Pkwy with a bannered BUSINESS US 31E in Hendersonville, TN.  This was switched back to run from Briley Pkwy back to Gallatin Pike removing the bannered BUSINESS US 31E.

Anyone know why it was rerouted to the surface route in Metro Nashville?  Did the Metro Government not want to maintain that portion of Gallatin Pike?  Prior to the rerouting back to the surface route their was a very old 30's spec shield that was still posted on Gallatin Pike.

I guess I can add Indiana's SR 100 and WIS-149.

Honestly the easiest way is to dig into old map resources and public works guides where you can find them.  I have a directory on Gribblenation pertaining to just California which includes a ton of Old US Route segments.   Really a lot of the time you are going to be reliant on your own research unless it's something like US 66 or the Lincoln Highway.
